As a demand for sustainable development rises, the preference for earth house (earth construction) increases gradually. However, there are few data for predicting and evaluating the thermal environment and indoor air quality of earth house. Thus, this study aims to measure thermal properties(thermal conductivity, density and specific heat) and pollutants emission intensities(formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds) of current main earth construction materials and make a comparison between earth and cement construction materials. As results, quantitative thermal properties and pollutants emission intensities of current main earth construction materials are shown.
The purpose of this paper is to research the performance of the energy in a case of the earth bermed House designed to be suitable for Korean situation in comparison with a conventional housing. The result of this study can be summerized as follows; 1) Heating energy of the earth bermed house is saved 40.1% than that of the conventional housing in Korea. 2) The time-lag of the earth bermed house is 57 minutes longer than that of a conventional housing on account of the thermal capacity, so the earth bermed house has much more satisfactory thermostatic mitigation effect rather than the conventional housing.
The purposes of this study are to find out the current status and features of earth housing, and to explore users' level of satisfaction and needs of improvement about earth housing. Primary findings are as follows: (1) The area of earth housing is generally 25-34 pyong and the construction cost of earth housing is usually 3,000,000-3,400,000 won per pyong. (2) The age of earth house users is generally forties, fifties, and sixties. And their occupation is usually retiree and farmer. The age of earth based pension users is generally twenties and thirties. (3) The construction method of earth housing is usually earth brick structure reinforced with wood structure and earth brick structure(adobe). (4) The finish of outer wall is generally earth brick laying and earth plaster. And the finish of inner wall is usually wall paper and earth plaster. Roof tile and asphalt shingle is frequently observed as roof finish. (5) Users' satisfaction about earth housing is investigated high level. Especially, the satisfaction degrees about faculty of humidity control, stink elimination, prevention from sick house syndrome, support for psychological stabilization and deep sleep are observed very highly. (6) Reduction of construction cost and prevention of crack is investigated as needs of improvement about earth housing.
Frank Lloyd Wright(1867-1959) had the confident concept that architecture should be at home in nature. His architecture was meant to bear an intimate relation to the earth and the sky, and should look as though it began there at the ground and contrasted with the sky. In handling all the details of house design elements, his efforts for being married to the ground was to conceive the void of the sky. This study is to research his thinking process and its development to the earth and the sky, and to analyze how such thought could reflect his houses. The mass of house are divided into three parts such as the foundation or base, body, and roof. These parts are respectively related to the earth and the sky. This study goes on regarding them as an analytical framework. The subjects of study are the Prairie houses in the early 20th century and the Usonian houses after 1930's. As results of this study, the earlier foundation as a platform appeared as a base and water table, and a strong baseline pressed the structures into the soil in the Prairie houses. The direct contact of wood and brick to ground were dominant details after Wiley house(1934). The base was almost invisible to the eye in the Usonian houses. Secondly, the pierlike shapes and delicate friezes of walls were anchored to the ground, and horizontal bands as trims or copings also got close to the earth. These characters had disappeared after the Allen house(1917), all components including exterior walls had been unified with the grid patterns in the Usonian houses. Thirdly, the overhanging cantilever roof had got to the earthbound by the reflection of shadow as well as their evident horizontal. He lowered the roof, lengthened and brought it closer to the ground. In this way, Frank Lloyd Wright intended his houses to be at home in nature. And also he tried to bind the houses to the earth and contrasted them with the sky. The houses would perform their highest function in relation to the earth and sky.
The electrical characteristics for applying the foundation of the house to the substitutional earth electrode was reviewed fundamentally. In order to measure the earth resistance in the foundation of the house, it was performed to investigate the effect of the electrode arrangements and configurations concerning to grounding methods, and tried to the adequate simulation for comparing those experimental data. The number of steel rods and the ground resistivity were affected to change the earth resistance, but the latter caused the large variation in its resistance compared to the former in this experiment. Since the large surface area in the foundation of the house have contacted the ground usually, it is possible to use the earth electrode substitutionally.
The various attempts is made to solve the energy and environment problems. In addition, people interested in their life quality want the more eco-friendly living space. So we suggested that the earth-sheltered house could be one of the eco-friendly and low energy consuming houses to meet the social interest. And we also made data for design of the earth-sheltered house to be applicable to climate of Korea. In this study, a simulation was performed to estimate a boundary temperature according to earth sheltering thickness at the earth-sheltered part(exterior wall) in the case of earth sheltering on the plane ground not using a sloped site. And we analyzed the reduction of a thermal load by using this boundary temperature. We also compared a case of earth sheltering at the vertical wall with a case of earth sheltering at the roof to know the thermal reduction effect of a case of earth sheltering at the vertical wall.
The aim of this study was to determine the basic perception of Kleingarten house planning of Jeonbuk area. The survey method was used for data collection. The major finding were as follows: 1) Almost all respondents have a very positive attitude the participant of Kleingarten. Many respondents wanted the cheapest price for the Kleingarten rental fee and for the travel time between their home and Kleingarten to be under an hour. 2) Two different size of 45 and 66 $m^2$ were preferable for the house floor plans. The most preferable floor plan type chosen by the respondents was a house design with a terrace and the elderly householders especially preferred a house floor plan with an LDK design. 54.3 per cent respondents liked the log house and 93.3 per cent respondents liked the eco-friendly building materials such as wood, earth (Korean natural earth: whangto), and adobe bricks etc. 3) There were more needs for useful facilities such as a pergola, a grassy lawn, small ponds, a playground for the childrens, patio table settings, etc.
There are ground facility of maintenance in house electric facility of infra maintenance electric home appliances having used multifariousness in house, that use electric energy of common source for equipment. The body of building such as the reinforced concrete construction is structurally united, and the electric resistance is also small. It is possible that those foundations have contacted the ground at large surface area and that it substitutes the building construction body for the earth electrode. This is called "the structure earthing". This method has been defined at electrical facilities technical standards and KS in our country, and it has been used in various quarters practically. However, in our country, there is no example of using the foundation of the house as substitution earth electrode practically, and the means of the evaluation as electrode has not been established either. Then, in this paper, basic research for utilizing foundation of the house as substitution earth electrode is carried out.
The purpose of this study is to understand the indoor thermal environment in the earth brick wall building what is called a ecological Architecture. To investigate thermal performances of the earth brick walls, it measured indoor and outdoor air temperature, relative humidity, globe temperature and PMV in reference house. The result of this study were summarized as the followings; 1) When the outdoor average air temperature was $21.8^{\circ}$, livingroom was $24.9^{\circ}$, kitchen was $25.1^{\circ}$ and 2nd floor room was $25.6^{\circ}$ at 150 cm height from the floor. 2) Although the average outdoor relative humidity was 78%, the livingroom was 67.5%. 3) As the air temperature difference between at the top and bottom was $0.6^{\circ}$ in living room, this value was below 1 % of PPD by ASHRAE Handbook. 4) Predicted Mean Vote(PMV) by ISO-7730 was +0.41.
The Nobi fault zone, which generated the 1891 Nobi Earthquake (M8.0), includes five or six faults distributed in and around Gifu and Aichi prefectures, Japan. Because large cities are located near the fault zone (e.g., Gifu and Nagoya), and because the zone will likely be reactivated in the future, relatively thorough surveys have been conducted on the 1891 Nobi earthquake event, examining the fault geometry, house collapse rate, and the magnitude and distribution of earthquake intensity and fault displacement. In this study, we calculated the earthquake slip along faults in the Nobi fault zone by applying a 3D numerical analysis. The analysis shows that a zone with slip displacements of up to 100 mm included all areas with house collapse rates of 100%. In addition, the maximum vertical displacement was approximately ${\pm}1700mm$, which is in agreement with the ${\pm}1400mm$ or greater vertical displacements obtained in previous studies. The analysis yielded a fault zone with slip displacements of > 30 mm that is coincident with areas in which house collapse rates were 60% of more. The analysis shows that the regional slip sense was coincident with areas of uplift and subsidence caused by the Nobi earthquake.
