A 110 m diameter aspheric metal secondary mirror for a test model of an earth observation satellite camera was fsbricated by ultra-precision single point diamond turning (SPDT). Aluminum alloy for mirror substrates is known to be easily machinable, but not polishable due to its ductility. A harder material, Ni, is usually electrolessly coated on an A1 substrate to increase the surface hardness for optical polishing. Aspheric metal secondary mirror without a conventional polishing process, the surface roughness of Ra=10nm, and the form error of Ra=λ/12(λ=632.8nm) has been required. The purpose of this research is to find the optimum machining conditions for reflector cutting of electroless-Ni coated A1 alloy and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of metal aspheric reflector.

KOMPSAT-2 will carry MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) which provides 1m resolution panchromatic and 4m resolution multi-spectral images at the altitude of 685km sun-synchronous mission orbit. The mission operation of KOMSPAT-2 is to provide the earth observation using MSC with nadir pointing. KOMPSAT-2 will also have the capability of roll/pitch tilt maneuver using reaction wheel of satellite as required. In order to protect MSC from thermal distortion as well as direct sunlight, MSC shall be operated within the constraint of sun incidence angle. It is expected that the sunlight will not violate the constraint of sun incidence angle for normal mission operations without roll/pitch maneuver. However, during roll/pitch tilt operations, optical module of MSC may be damaged by the sunlight. This study analyzed sun incidence angle of payload using KOMPSAT-2 AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) Design and Performance Analysis Soft ware for KOMPSAT-2 normal mission operations.
High-resolution satellite images at sub-5m footprint are becoming increasingly available to the earth observation community and their respective clients. The related cameras are all using linear array CCD technology for image sensing. The possibility and need for accurate 3D object reconstruction requires a sophisticated camera model, being able to deal with such sensor geometry. We have recently developed a full suite of new methods and software for the precision processing of this kind of data. The software can accommodate images from IKONOS, QuickBird, ALOS PRISM, SPOT5 HRS and sensors of similar type to be expected in the future. We will report about the status of the software, the functionality and some new algorithmic approaches in support of the processing concept. The functionality will be verified by results from various pilot projects. We put particular emphasis on the automatic generation of DSMs, which can be done at sub-pixel accuracy and on the semi-automated generation of city models.

Satrec Initiative successfully developed and verified a high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-D Ver.1.0. We designed this system to give improved spatial and radiometric resolution compared with EOS-C series systems. The thermal control subsystem (TCS) of the EOS-D Ver.1.0 uses heaters to meet the opto-mechanical requirements during in-orbit operation and uses different thermal coatings and multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets to minimize the heater power consumption. Also, we designed and verified a refocusing mechanism to compensate the misalignment caused by moisture desorption from the metering structure. We verified the design margin and workmanship by conducting the qualification level thermal vacuum test. We also performed the verification of thermal math model (TMM) by comparing with thermal balance test results. As a result, we concluded that it faithfully represents the thermal characteristics of the EOS-D Ver.1.0.

The exploration of the solar system is carried out through various payloads, and accordingly, many research results are emerging. We tried to apply deep-learning as a method of studying the bodies of solar system. Unlike Earth observation satellite data, the data of solar system differ greatly from celestial bodies to probes and to payloads of each probe. Therefore, it may be difficult to apply it to various data with the deep-learning model, but we expect that it will be able to reduce human errors or compensate for missing parts. We have implemented a model that detects craters on the lunar surface. A model was created using the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) image and the provided shapefile as input values, and applied to the lunar surface image. Although the result was not satisfactory, it will be applied to the image of the permanently shadow regions of the Moon, which is finally acquired by ShadowCam through image pre-processing and model modification. In addition, by attempting to apply it to Ceres and Mercury, which have similar the lunar surface, it is intended to suggest that deep-learning is another method for the study of the solar system.

Thermal analysis and design of FPA(Focal Plane Assembly)-CU(Cooling Unit) for Earth observation camera is performed. FPA-CU is the first cooling device for a spacecraft which is designed and manufactured by its own technology in Korea. FPA-CU has a special feature, TBM(Thermal Buffer Mass) which is discriminated from typical cooling devices using heat pipes and radiator. TBM can be regarded as a thermal energy reservoir and it shows thermally transient characteristics, which make it difficult to design the size and shape of TBM. In current study, a method to determine the volume and the size of TBM is proposed and validated. The transient thermal analysis for FPA-CU for 5 operational scenarios is performed and validates the final design of FPA-CU (Radiator,TBM, Heat pipe I/F). In case of an abnormal operation of a heat pipe among three radiator heat pipes, the temperature of FPA can be increased $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ according to the numerical simulation.

Water color analysis allows non-destructive estimation of abundance of optically active water constituents in the water body. Recently, there have been increasing needs for light-weighted multispectral cameras that can be integrated with low altitude unmanned platforms such as drones, autonomous vehicles, and heli-kites, for the water color analysis by spectroradiometers. This study performs the preprocessing of the Micasense Rededge-M camera which recently receives a growing attention from the earth observation community for its handiness and applicability for local environment monitoring, and investigates the applicability of Rededge-M data for water color analysis. The Vignette correction and the band alignment were conducted for the radiometric image data from Rededge-M, and the sky, water, and solar radiation essential for the water color analysis, and the resultant remote sensing reflectance were validated with an independent hyperspectral instrument, TriOS RAMSES. The experiment shows that Rededge-M generally satisfies the basic performance criteria for water color analysis, although noticeable differences are observed in the blue (475 nm) and the near-infrared (840 nm) band compared with RAMSES.

The Mission Control System for KOMPSAT-2 was developed by ETRI and is being operated at Satellite Control Center at KARI to monitor and control KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose Satellite) which was launched in July 28th, 2006. MCE provides the functions such as telemetry reception and processing, telecommand generation and transmission, satellite tracking and ranging, orbit prediction and determination, attitude maneuver planning, satellite simulation, etc. KOMPSAT-2 is the successor of KOMPSAT-1 which is an earth-observation satellite. KOMPSAT-2 has higher resolution image taking ability due to MSC (Multi Spectral Camera) payload in the satellite and precise orbit and attitude determination by Mission Control System. It can produce one meter resolution image compared to six meter resolution image by KOMPSAT-1.

Satrec Initiative successfully developed a high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-D Ver.1.0. EOS-D Ver.1.0 is the main payload of DubaiSat-2 and Deimos-2, which are developed based on the SI-300 platform of Satrec Initiative. After the launch and early operation (LEOP) of DubaiSat-2 and Deimos-2, we performed refocusing for the telescope of EOS-D Ver.1.0 to compensate for the dimensional change of its metering structure by moisture out-gassing. Before and after refocusing, we conducted the performance evaluation of thermal control system(TCS) for EOS-D Ver.1.0 using the in-orbit telemetry data. The evaluation showed EOS-D Ver.1.0 was under well-controlled thermal environment, which demonstrates TCS was designed and developed to meet all requirements.
