Recently, very-early strength latex-modified concrete(below ; VES-LMC) has been developed for repairing and overlaying the old concrete bridge deck. Early-age defects in high-performance concrete due to thermal and autogenous deformation shorten the life cycle of concrete structures. Thus, it is necessary to examine the behavior of early-age concrete at the stages of design and construction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the autogenous shrinkage of VES-LMC, having an experimental variables such as retarder and water-cement ratio. The greater the retarder content in VES-LMC, the greater the expansion at early-age. This recommend the small retarder content as possible. The effect of water-cement ratio on early-age behavior is very small, because of the wrapped specimen in order to prevent water evaporation.

In this study, to investigate autogenous shrinkage behavior of 120MPa UHSC at early ages, free and restrained shrinkage tests are performed for various strength levels(50MPa, 80MPa, 120MPa). For 120MPa, the effect of fly ash on autogenous shrinkage was also investigated. In order to assess the potential for early-age cracking in concrete and a mixtures susceptibility to shrinkage cracking, restrained ring test was carried out. Test results show that autogenous shrinkage of UHSC was much higher than that of HSC, VHSC and fly ash delayed cracking age in UHSC by decreasing autogenous shrinkage.

HPFRCC is characterized by a very low water-to-binder ratio which induce extremely large autogenous shrinkage at early age. The restriction of such autogenous shrinkage through the use of forms and reinforcing bars will increase substantially the risk of excessive residual stresses and shrinkage cracking. The exact understanding of the shrinkage behavior and studies on solutions to reduce shrinkage should be imperatively undertaken for further application of HPFRCC to real structures. Therefore, this paper investigated the mechanical properties of HPFRCC with respect to the eventual introduction of expansive admixture(EA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) in the mixture. Autogenous shrinkage test was conducted considering the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) measured at early age so as to examine the effects of EA and SRA on the autogenous shrinkage behavior of HPFRCC.

Recently, as a performance based design concept is introduced, assurance of expected performances on serviceability and safety in the whole span of life is exactly requested. So, quantitative assessments about durability related properties of concrete in early-age long term are come to necessary, Especially in early age, deterioration which affects long-term durability performance can be occurred by hydration heat and shrinkage, so development of reasonable hydration heat model which can simulate early age behavior is necessary. The micor-pore structure formation property also affects shrinkage behavior in early age and carbonations and chloride ion penetration characteristic in long term, So, for the quantitative assessment on durability performance of concrete, modelings of early age concrete based on hydration process and micor-pore structure formation characteristics are important. In this paper, a micromechanics based hydration heat evolution model is adopted and a quantitative model which can simulate micro-pore structure development is also verified with experimental results. The models can be used effectively to simulate the early-age behavior of concrete composed of different mix proportions.

Concrete with low water to binder ratio (W/B) is prone to large autogenous shrinkage. Early age cracking of concrete would be caused by tensile stress induced by large autogenous shrinkage under restrained condition. Therefore, it is necessary to measure autogenous shrinkage to control the early age cracking of concrete. An objective of this study is to investigate the effects of W/B and blast furnace slag (BFS) on autogenous shrinkage of concrete. Autogenous shrinkage of concrete with various W/B ranging from 0.42 to 0.27 and BFS contents of 0, 30 and 50% were measured. Test results show that the autogenous shrinkage of concrete increases as the W/B decreases, and all BFS concretes showed larger autogenous shrinkage than OPC concretes with the same W/B. Moreover, the higher BFS content, the larger autogenous shrinkage.

An improvement of the test method is proposed to more accurately measure early-age autogenous shrinkage in concrete particularly within first 24 hours after casting. Experiments were conducted considering existing and improved method. In improved method, hydration temperature was artificially controlled to prevent thermal deformations. Test results indicate that the autogenous shrinkage calculated by existing approach is underestimated which might be due to the wrong assumption of considering the thermal dilation coefficient to be constant (equal to 10 ${\times}$$10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$) at early-age. We recommend that the proposed method should be adopted to better assess precise value of autogenous shrinkage or an appropriate method of determining the time-evolution of thermal dilation coefficient be considered.

The shrinkage of high strength/high performance concrete is very important property for the good working of a structure since it very often generates early age cracking due to thermal and autogenous shrinkage. Autogenous shrinkage occurs as a result of internal moisture depletion due to hydration and temperature-induced effects. The level of autogenous shrinkage occurring due to hydration also depends on temperature history at very early age. It is necessary that effect of temperature on autogenous shrinkage is investigated since the stress generated due to autogenous shrinkage is quantified. In this study, Effect of hydration heat evolution on autogenous shrinkage of high strength concretes with W/C=25-40% was investigated.

Early age cracking of concrete is a widespread and complicated problem, and diverse applications in practical engineering have focused on this issue. Since massive concrete base slab composes the infrastructure of other concrete structures such as pier, concrete dam, and high rise buildings, early age cracking of that is considered as a crucial problem. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) implemented with the age-dependent microplane model was performed. For a massive concrete base slab, cracking initiation and propagation, and deformation variation were investigated with concrete age. In massive concrete slab, autogenous shrinkage increases the risk of early age cracking and it reduces reinforcement effect on control of early age cracking. Gradual crack occurrence is experienced from exterior surface towards interior of the slab in case of combined hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage. FEA implemented with enhanced microplane model successfully simulates the typical cracking patterns due to edge restraint in concrete base slab.

In this study, to analyze the correlation between hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage of high strength concrete at an early age, hydration heating velocity and autogenous shrinking velocity as quantitative coefficients which represent the main properties of hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage were proposed. Two coefficients were calculated by statistical analysis and were equal with the regression coefficient. The complemented semi-adiabatic temperature rise test as test method to evaluate the hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage of concrete were proposed. In results of proposed test and analysis method, it was possible that early age properties of hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage of concrete were expressed numerically, and autogenous shrinkage was represented by equation with coefficients of hydration heat.
In this study, experimental tests of chemical and autogenous shrinkage were performed to evaluate the early age shrinkage behaviors of ultra high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC) with various replacement ratios of silica fume (SF), shrinkage reducing agent (SRA), expansive admixture (EA), and superplasticizer (SP). Starting time of self-desiccation, was analyzed by comparing the setting times and the deviated point of chemical and autogenous shrinkage strains. The test results indicated that both SF and SRA augment the early age chemical shrinkage, whereas SP delays the hydration reaction between cement particles and water, and reduces chemical shrinkage. About 49% of autogenous shrinkage was depleted by synergetic effect of SRA and EA. The hardening of UHPCC was catalyzed by containing EA. Self-desiccation of UHPCC occurred prior to the initial setting due to the high volume fraction of fibers and low water-binder ratio (W/B).
