Fire blight in apple and pear orchards, caused by Erwinia amylovora, is a global problem. Ongoing outbreaks have occurred since 2015. In 2020, 744 orchards were infected compared with 43 orchards in 2015 in Korea. When are insufficient. In Korea, all host plants in infected orchards are buried deeply with lime to eradicate the E. amylovora outbreak within a few days. Apple trees with infected trunks and branches and twigs with infected leaves and infected blooms were collected from an apple orchard in Chungju, Chungbuk province, where fire blight occurred in 2020. We used these samples to investigate the population density and internal distribution of E. amylovora on infected branches and twigs during early season infections. Infected branches and twigs were cut at 10 cm intervals from the infected site, and E. amylovora was isolated from tissue lysates to measure population density (colony-forming unit [CFU]·mL-1). The polymerase chain reaction was performed on genomic DNA using E. amylovora specific primers. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to detect E. amylovora in asymptomatic tissue. The objective of these assays was to collect data relevant to the removal of branches from infected trees during early season infection. In infected branches, high densities of greater than 106 CFU·mL-1 E. amylovora were detected within 20 cm of the infected sites. Low densities ranging from 102 to 106 CFU·mL-1 E. amylovora were found in asymptomatic tissues at distances of 40 - 75 cm from an infection site.
The detectable levels and population fluctuations of phytoplasmas infecting dwarf mulberry trees were investigated using nested-PCR and competitive-PCR methods. Samples of five different types were studied : A. petiole of a leaf that displays dwarf symptoms, B. petiole from apparently healthy leaf residing on a branch also supports a leaf with dwarf symptoms, C. the branch portion that supports a leaf with dwarf symptoms, D. the leaf petiole from healthy appearing leaves on branch with no dwarf symptoms, and branch portion of branch with no dwarf symptoms, E. the rootlets of trees with dwarf symptoms. These 5-parts were collected from each tree during June - April, once in every two months. The phytoplasma was detected from all parts of collected mulberry samples during all seasons using nested-PCR with AS-1/AS-2 primer pairs. The phytoplasma was detected until $10^4$ dilution using direct-PCR method, but it was detected until $10^{13}$ dilution by the nested-PCR method. The density of pytoplasma was found to be $7.94{\times}10^{18}-10^{12}copies/{\mu}L$ in mulberry trees. The density of phytoplasma was observed throughout the year in all samples of mulberry trees. The highest rates of phytoplasma was found in the samples B and C during the early growing season followed by the sample A and D during the dormant season. Samples C and E displayed the highest phytoplasma density followed sample D. The density of phytoplasma appeared stable during all the seasons for samples C and A. The result of the present study demonstrates the utility of nested-PCR and competitive-PCR for detection and determination of population fluctuations of phytoplasmas in plant tissues.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' safety education activities to determine the significant educational diagnosis variables and to identify their needs of safety education in early-child care centers based on the PRECEDE model. Methods: A total of 304 teachers in early-child care centers participated in this study selected by a multi-stage stratified sampling method considering 11 regions in Seoul, Korea. Self-report type questionnaires were posted to all teachers in 220 early-child care centers by ground mailing service and the 304 teachers completed the questionnaires. The participants' responses were anonymously coded into and analyzed in SPSS program. Results: 'Scratch or bite' was the most frequent accident type(78.3%) and the frequent accident places were 'classroom(88.8%)' and 'playground(67.8%)'. The most frequently conducted safety education activities were 'reminding children their safe behaviors at the beginning and the end of daily class' and the next was 'saving a special time for safety education.' For educational diagnosis factors, related to safety education activities, teachers' safety education activity was more frequent when teachers' safety knowledge was high(p<.001), when teachers had good application skills of their knowledge to their teaching activities(p<.001), when they had strong needs on safety training opportunities(p<.05), and their interests on safety education(p<.001). For enabling factors, class preparation by safety education guide-book review(p<.001), by development of educational materials(p<.001), and by search for the related reference (p<.001), and by participation to safety education training programs for teachers(p<.01) were the significant enabling factors on teachers' safety class activities. For the reinforcing factors, the center-wide support of safety education brochures to children (p<.001), the concerns of centers utilizing safety education specialists(p<.001), and the concerns about safety information collection out of centers(p<.001) were significant factors related with teachers' safety education activities. Conclusions: The significant educational and institutional factors on teachers' safety education activities were teachers' concerns on safety education, their interests on safety knowledge, and the strong concerns on child safety education from the centers.
The disease development of Anthracnose of sweet persimmon in relation to release of conida of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were observed in a farmer's field located in Jinju from 1998 to 2002. The conidia started to release from early April and reached maximum in June to late July. The amount of conidia production reduced drastically from early August. The number of conidia trapped was closely related to amount of precipitation at the same period and number of new infections on the emerging branches and young fruits in orchard. The conidia released during the April was not effected to disease occurrence of persimmon tree but the spores produced from inoculum source after early May significantly important to the infection of the pathogen on emerging branch and this infection was directly related to infections on young fruits. Consequently the early infections on the branches brought severe occurrence of Anthracnose in the orchard. Most of the infected fruits were dropped in unripe state. The earlier infection caused the earlier fruit drop. The rate of fruit drop was reached up to 84.1% in August when the disease was occurred severely. Anthracnose of sweet persimmon also occurred in market shelf and storage warehouse. The anthracnose fruits are presumed to be infected while in orchard. Because the symptom formed on the fruit was too tiny to eliminate, the infected fruits were involved in storage boxes and anthracnose gradually developed in storage condition. The rate of diseased fruit observed in Jinju area were 1.2 to 1.6%.
This study was conducted to investigate the flowering habit for the botanical types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea. L) in cultural limiting region. Eight peanut varieties pertaining to virginia, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung type were used in this study. Shinpung type, a new erect type was developed at Crop Experiment Station, ORD. Appearance of the first flower of peanut plants is observed at a relatively early growing stage. Number of days to first flower were 41 days under vinyl-mulching while non-mulching culture took 55 days. Number of days to first flower were delayed in order of Valencia, Spanish, Shinpung, Virginia type. Flowering durations were distinguished among botanical types and days of those were Virginia 85-93, Spanish 101-105, Valencia 106-113, Shinpung 82-88 days, respectively. The Spanish and Valencia types produced more flowers than Virginia and Shinpung types. The maximum flowering stage of Shinpung and Virginia types reached early and ceased by one cycle, while Spanish and Valencia types came late and showed maximum stage through the early and late stage during the growth stage. By vinyl-mulching, the maximum flowering stage was shortened by 20 days than that of non-mulching. Distribution of flowers for each of branch positions to total flowers occupied 52-53% in two cotyledonary branchs, 23-27% in 3rd to 5th branchs, 20-25% in over. 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable botanical type than the other types for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of shortening of days to first flower, flowering duration and distribution of lower branch of effective flowers.

This article aims at bibliographical analysis of the and historical research of Buddhism in the period of king ChungYeul. The analysis is made in the respects of: 1) physical form 2) historical aspect of the Zen Buddhism in the latter period of Koryo Dynasty 3) related persons who corresponded with Mongsan First, this books is consist of 56 records about tripitaka, biography of Mongsan, poets of Zen Buddhism, and abstracts of Buddhist books. Secondly, the new trends of Buddhism in the 13th century was influenced by Mongsan Son(contemplate school, zen). He was corresponded with some political persons and the elite class of Koryo Buddhism. Because of these meetings, LimJae Son were adopted main stream of zen Buddism in Koryo Dynasty by Mongsan and his accompanies. Thirdly, these political groups want to meet Mongsan and his teaching about zen Buddism, but he suggest three questions to the gourp instead of meeting. And he explained 10 kinds of methods to study zen Buddism comparing visited ten persons with ten pinetrees. In the Koryo Dynasty, Buddism was very inportant in history of throughts and social functions. But there had been little research on Mongsan who afford theoretical base on zen Buddism in Chosun Dynasty. On the point of the relation to Koryo and Yuan dynasty in zen Buddism. The is a new and important records that afford some solutions of religious branch and trends in early periods of Chosun Dynasty.
Purpose: To evaluate myocardial conductivity to understand cardiac involvement in patients with mitochondrial disease. Methods: We performed retrospective study on fifty-seven nonspecific mitochondrial encephalopathy patients with no clinical cardiac manifestations. The patients were diagnosed with mitochondrial respiratory chain complex defects through biochemical enzyme assays of muscle tissue. We performed standard 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) on all patients. Results: ECG abnormalities were observed in 30 patients (52.6%). Prolongation of the QTc interval (>440 ms) was seen in 19 patients (33.3%), widening of the corrected QRS interval in 15 (26.3%), and bundle branch block in four (7.0%). Atrioventricular block, premature atrial contraction and premature ventricular contraction were seen in two patients each (3.5%) and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in one patient (1.8%). Conclusion: Given this finding, we recommend active screening with ECG in patients with mitochondrial disease even in patients without obvious cardiac manifestation.
Background: In Iran, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women and a major public health problem. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out to determine knowledge on breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE) practices of 384 females living in the city of Hamadan, Iran. A purposive sampling method was adopted and data were collected via face-to-face interviews based on a validated questionnaire developed for this study. Results: Among respondents 268 (69.8%) were married and 144 (37.5%) of the respondents reported having a family history of breast cancer. One hundred respondents (26.0%) claimed they practiced BSE. Level of breast cancer knowledge was significantly associated with BSE practice (p=0.000). There was no association with demographic details (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings showed that Iranian women's knowledge regarding breast cancer and the practice of BSE is inadequate. Targeted education should be implemented to improve early detection of breast cancer.
The number of cancer patients has increased due to longer life spans and treatment has become a universal problem. Since molecular-targeted therapies were introduced as a new developmental strategy, certain targets have been examined hundreds of times, with developers overlapping their research efforts. We need to focus our energy and resources on novel drug candidate identification and optimization, in order to enhance the entry of early-stage drug candidates into the therapeutics pipeline. This presents a major opportunity for Korea to jump the decades-old development gap between our programs and those that are more advanced in other countries. Although this country does not have a specific center for validation and development of cancer therapeutics, we do have cutting-edge scientists performing research in many institutions. In this paper, I will review cancer drug development in Korea and suggest future directions, while urging colleagues to utilize their networking expertise so we can move toward a new paradigm of novel therapeutics development. An example of such efforts has begun with the Drug Development Consortium, which was described in the KSBMB chapter. This consortium was launched in 2010 by biochemists, chemists, cell and molecular biologists and pharmacologists. It is clear that effective cancer therapeutics will be developed more efficiently when we all strive for the same goal.
Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is the causative agent of a highly contagious and devastating Newcastle disease of poultry. A NDV (isolate DK1/07) was isolated from apparently healthy wild spot-billed ducks (Anas poecilorhyncha) captured at upper branch of the SapGyo Creek in Chungbuk province, Korea during early 2007. The DK1/07 isolate of minimum chicken embryo lethal dose killed all SPF chicken embryos within 60 h. The cleavage site of the F protein possessed the amino acid sequence $^{112}R-R-Q-K-R-F^{117}$, which is a motif characteristic of virulent NDV strains. The F protein-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that the DK1/07 duck isolate was included in the cluster of genotype VIId and most closely related to recent NDV isolates obtained from chicken farms in Korea. Epidemiological importance of virulent NDV from wild duck is discussed.
