Enhanced salp swarm algorithm based on opposition learning and merit function methods for optimum design of MTMD

  • Recently, population based optimization algorithms are developed to deal with a variety of optimization problems. In this paper, the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is dramatically enhanced and a new algorithm is named Enhanced Salp Swarm Algorithm (ESSA) which is effectively utilized in optimization problems. To generate the ESSA, an opposition-based learning and merit function methods are added to standard SSA to enhance both exploration and exploitation abilities. To have a clear judgment about the performance of the ESSA, firstly, it is employed to solve some mathematical benchmark test functions. Next, it is exploited to deal with engineering problems such as optimally designing the benchmark buildings equipped with multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD) under earthquake excitation. By comparing the obtained results with those obtained from other algorithms, it can be concluded that the proposed new ESSA algorithm not only provides very competitive results, but also it can be successfully applied to the optimal design of the MTMD.

미국의 교육격차와 지원정책 분석 (A Study on the Educational Gap and Supporting Policy in USA)

  • 이 연구는 미국의 교육격차 배경과 최근의 구체적인 교육격차 실태를 분석함으로써 한국 교육격차 해소를 위한 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 관련 논문과 미국교육부 게시 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 미국은 사회적으로 소득 격차가 더욱 확대되고 있고, 이것은 교육기회의 격차로 이어지고 있으며, 결과적으로 교육격차로 격차로 귀결되고 있다. 이러한 교육격차는 인종적인 차원의 차이보다는 경제적 차원의 차이로 인식되고 있다. 모든학생성공법(ESSA)을 바탕으로 교육격차를 해소하기 위한 노력을 하고 있으며, 특히 농촌지역에 대한 교육지원정책이 크게 확대되었다. ESSA는 농촌지역 교육성취프로그램(REAP)을 통해 명목적이었던 기존의 지원을 보다 실제적으로 바꾸었다. 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 교육격차를 해소하기 위해 지역별로 차별화된 교육목표 설정, 소외지역에 대한 지원 강화, 지역별 교육비 격차 해소, 농촌지역 및 학력이 낮은 학교에 대한 정기적인 모니터링 등을 논의하였다.

  • A multigrid algorithm is developed for solving the one- dimensional initial boundary value problem. The numerical solutions of linear and nonlinear Burgers; equation for various initial conditions are studied. The stability conditions are derived by Von -Neumann analysis . Numerical results are presented.

New stability equation for columns in unbraced frames

  • The effective length factor of a framed column may be determined by means of the alignment chart procedure. This method is based on many unrealistic assumptions, among which is that all columns have the same stiffness parameter, which is dependent on the length, axial load, and moment of inertia of the column. A new approximate method is developed for the determination of effective length factors for columns in unbraced frames. This method takes into account the effects of inelastic column behaviour, far end conditions of the restraining beams and columns, semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, and differentiated stiffness parameters of columns. This method may be implemented on a microcomputer. A numerical study was carried out to demonstrate the extent to which the involved parameters affect the K factor. The beam-to-column connection stiffness, the stiffness parameter of columns, and the far end conditions of restraining members have a significant effect on the K factor of the column under investigation. The developed method is recommended for design purposes.

Enhanced technique for Arabic handwriting recognition using deep belief network and a morphological algorithm for solving ligature segmentation

  • Arabic handwriting segmentation and recognition is an area of research that has not yet been fully understood. Dealing with Arabic ligature segmentation, where the Arabic characters are connected and unconstrained naturally, is one of the fundamental problems when dealing with the Arabic script. Arabic character-recognition techniques consider ligatures as new classes in addition to the classes of the Arabic characters. This paper introduces an enhanced technique for Arabic handwriting recognition using the deep belief network (DBN) and a new morphological algorithm for ligature segmentation. There are two main stages for the implementation of this technique. The first stage involves an enhanced technique of the Sari segmentation algorithm, where a new ligature segmentation algorithm is developed. The second stage involves the Arabic character recognition using DBNs and support vector machines (SVMs). The two stages are tested on the IFN/ENIT and HACDB databases, and the results obtained proved the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared with other existing systems.

  • In this paper we obtain a new structure of a k-annihilating ideal hypergraph of a reduced ring R, by determine the order and size of a hypergraph 𝒜𝒢k(R). Also we describe and count the degree of every nontrivial ideal of a ring R containing in vertex set 𝒜(R, k) of a hypergraph 𝒜𝒢k(R). Furthermore, we prove the diameter of 𝒜𝒢k(R) must be less than or equal to 2. Finally, we determine the minimal dominating set of a k-annihilating ideal hypergraph of a ring R.

Bitcoin Algorithm Trading using Genetic Programming

  • The author presents a simple data-driven intraday technical indicator trading approach based on Genetic Programming (GP) for return forecasting in the Bitcoin market. We use five trend-following technical indicators as input to GP for developing trading rules. Using data on daily Bitcoin historical prices from January 2017 to February 2020, our principal results show that the combination of technical analysis indicators and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, primarily GP, is a potential forecasting tool for Bitcoin prices, even outperforming the buy-and-hold strategy. Sensitivity analysis is employed to adjust the number and values of variables, activation functions, and fitness functions of the GP-based system to verify our approach's robustness.

Applications and Challenges of Lithium-Sulfur Electrochemical Batteries

  • This paper presents applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) energy storage batteries, while showing merits and demerits of several techniques to mitigate their electrochemical challenges. Unmanned aerial vehicles, electric cars, and grid-scale energy storage systems represent main applications of Li-S batteries due to their low cost, high specific capacity, and light weight. However, polysulfide shuttle effects, low conductivities, and low coulombic efficiencies signify key challenges of Li-S batteries, causing high volumetric changes, dendritic growths, and limited cycling performances. Solid-state electrolytes, interfacial interlayers, and electrocatalysts denote promising methods to mitigate such challenges. Moreover, nanomaterials have capability to improve kinetic reactions of Li-S batteries based on several properties of nanoparticles to immobilize sulfur in cathodes, stabilizing lithium in anodes while controlling volumetric growths. Li-S energy storage technologies are able to satisfy requirements of future markets for advanced rechargeable batteries with high-power densities and low costs, considering environmentally friendly systems based on renewable energy sources.

생후 6개월 이하 환아에서 대동맥 축착증과 심실중격결손의 일차 완전교정 (Single-Stage Repair of Coarctation of the Aorta and Ventricular Septal Defect in Infants Younger than 6 Months)

  • 배경: 대동맥 축착증과 심실중격결손이 동반된 환아의 적절한 치료 방침에 대해서는 이견이 많다. 본 연구는 생후 6개월 이하의 환아에서 대동맥 축착증과 심실중격결손의 일타 완전교정 결과 및 수술방법에 따른 대동맥 축착증의 재발에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 1995년 1월부터 2000년 12월가지 본원에서 대동맥 축착증과 심실중격결손으로 일차 완전교정을 시행받은 생후 6개월 이하의 환아 33명을 대상으로 후향적으로 조사하였다. 환아의 평균 연령과 체중은 각각 54$\pm$37일(12일~171일)과 3.9$\pm$1.1kg(1.5~6kg)이었다. 대동맥 축착 고정은 연구 초기에는 저체온하 완전순환정지하에서 시행하였으며 최근에는 순환정지없이 무명동맥을 통한 국소 뇌관류 상태에서 시행하였다. 축착증 교정 방법은 초기에는 Extended cad-to-end anastomosis(EEEA;n=16)와 Extended side-to-side anastomosis(ESSA;n=2)를, 최근에는 Extended end-to-sidc anasto mosis(EESA;n=15)를 이용하였다 심실중격결손은 초기 16명에서는 Dacron을, 최근 17명에서는 자가 심낭편을 이용하여 폐쇄하였다. 대동맥궁 발육부전은 29명(88%)에서 있었으며 원위부 발육부전 18명, 완전형 5명, 그리고 복잡형은 6명이었다.

Influence of Tether Length in the Response Behavior of Square Tension Leg Platform in Regular Waves

  • The tension leg platform (TLP) is a vertically moored structure with excess buoyancy. The TLP is regarded as moored structure in horizontal plan, while inherit stiffness of fixed platform in vertical plane. In this paper, a numerical study using modified Morison equation was carried out in the time domain to investigate the influence of nonlinearities due to hydrodynamic forces and the coupling effect between surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw degrees of freedom on the dynamic behavior of TLP's. The stiffness of the TLP was derived from a combination of hydrostatic restoring forces and restoring forces due to cables and the nonlinear equations of motion were solved utilizing Newmark's beta integration scheme. The effect of tethers length and wave characteristics such as wave period and wave height on the response of TLP's was evaluated. Only uni-directional waves in the surge direction was considered in the analysis. It was found that for short wave periods (i.e. 10 sec.), the surge response consisted of small amplitude oscillations about a displaced position that is significantly dependent on tether length, wave height; whereas for longer wave periods, the surge response showed high amplitude oscillations about that is significantly dependent on tether length.
