A Study on the Characteristics of Lumbar Disc Herniation Being Classified Blood Stasis and Phlegm-Retained Fluid (어혈, 담음으로 변증된 요추부 추간판 탈출증 환자들의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives In this study, we wanted to find out the characteristics - gender, SLR test, valsalva test, duration, ESR, CRP and night pain - of lumbar disc herniation being classified as blood stasis and phlegm-retained fluid. Methods We surveyed 42 patients suffering from lumbar disc herniation using the diagnosis blood stasis syndrome, water retention syndrome of the comprehensive diagnosis of QI blood water. Blood stasis and phlegm-retained fluid are identical with blood stasis syndrome, water retention syndrome. Then we analyzed the characteristics - gender, SLR test, valsalva test, duration, ESR, CRP and night pain - of the patients suffering from lumbar disc herniation who were diagnosed as blood stasis and phlegm-retained fluid. Results Patients were sorted into two groups: 18 blood stasis patients and 30 phlegm-retained fluid patients. Gender (Woman), acute phase and night pain are related to blood stasis. Acute phase, positive of SLR test is related to phlegm-retained fluid. There was no correlation between blood stasis and SLR test, valsalva test, duration, ESR, CRP. Also no correlation between phlegm-fluid and gender, valsalva test, duration, ESR, CRP and night pain. Conclusions By Considering the characteristics - gender, SLR test, valsalva test, duration, ESR, CRP and night pain - of lumbar disc herniation patients, it can help to analyze the pattern of its symptoms.

Relationship between Differential Expression of Estrogen Receptor and Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor Genes in Ovary and Heterosis of Egg Number Traits in Chickens

  • In order to understand the molecular mechanism of heterosis of reproduction traits in chickens, we used the quantitative real-time reverse transcriptional polymerase chain reaction (Quantitative real-time RT-PCR) technique to investigate the differential expression of estrogen receptor (ESR) and follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) genes in 32-week-old ovaries of inbred chickens and their hybrid offspring in $4{\times}4$ diallel crosses, which involved White Plymouth Rock (E), CAU Brown (D), Silkies (C) and White Leghorn (A). We found that there were significant differences in mRNA expression of ESR and FSHR genes not only between hybrids and their parental lines (p<0.01), but also among different crosses (p<0.01). Furthermore, positive correlations between differential expression of both ESR and FHSR in hybrids and heterosis percentages of 32-week-old and 42-week-old egg number traits were significant at p<0.05. Our results suggested that differential expression of ESR and FSHR genes in the ovaries of inbred chickens and their hybrids could play roles in the formation of heterosis of egg number traits to some extent.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the cold air application for release of inflamation and pain in patient with acute rheumatoid arthritis who had taken medication(NSAIDs, DMARDs, corticosteroids). The participants had knee joint pain and ESR score over the 30. They were randomly assigned to three groups with each 15. Control group(group I ) were applied cold air and medication, experimental group II were applied hot pack and medication. and experimental group III were applied only medication. They were evaluated from April 1, 2000 to september 1,2000 ,and it was examined by ESR and VAS(visual analoge scale) in Lee Bang Hoon rehabilitation medicine clinic in Jeju Korea. The result of this study were as follow: 1. It was found that group 1, group II and group III had the statistically significant reduction of the ESR score according to treatment time(p<.05). 2. There were not statistically significant differences in ESR change pattern of each group according to treatment time(p>.05). 3. There were not statistically significant differences in the change of ESR according to treatment time between group I and group II , group I and group III , and group II and group III (p<.05). 4. It was found that group I . group II and group III had the statistically significant reduction of the VAS(Visual Analoge Scale) score according to treatment time(p<.05). 5. There were statistically significant differences in VAS score according to treatment time between control group(group I ) and experimental groups(group II and group III)(p<.05), but there were not stsiistically significant differences between experimental groups(p>.05).

$a-Si_{1-x}Ge_x:H$ 박막의 고상결정화에 따른 스핀밀도의 변화

  • 다결정 실리콘-게르마늄(poly-SiGe)은 태양전지 및 TFT-LCD와 같은 소자 응용에 있어서 중요하게 연구되고 있는 물질이다. 우리는 수소화된 비정질 실리콘-게르마늄 (a-Si1-xGex:H) 박막을 증착시키고 고상결정화시키며 XRD(x-ray diffraction) 및 ESR (electron spin resonance) 측정을 수행하였다. PECVD 증착가스는 SiH4과 GeH4가스를 사용하였고 Ge의 성분비는 x=0.0, 0.1, 0.5 정도로 조절되었다. 기판은 Corning 1737 glass를 사용하였고, 기판 온도는 20$0^{\circ}C$ 이었다. 증착압력과 r.f. 전력은 각각 0.6Torr와 3W이었다. 증착된 SiGe 박막은 고상결정화를 위해 $600^{\circ}C$ N2 분위기에서 가열되고, 그에 따른 XRD 및 ESR spectrum의 변화를 관찰하였다. ESR 측정은 X-band 그리고 상온에서 행해졌다. 먼저 XRD 측정으로부터 박막의 고상결정화 정도를 알 수 있었고, 고상결정화 과정이 초기 핵형성 단계와 결정화 단계, 그리고 더 이상 결정화가 일어나지 않는 완료 단계로 구분될 수 있음을 보여주었다. X값이 증가함에 따라 결정화 시간은 훨씬 단축되었다. ESR로 측정된 스핀 밀도는 a-Si1-xGex:H 박막이 처음 가열됨에 따라 전체적으로 크게 증가했다가, 결정화가 일어나면서 다시 감소하여 나중에는 거의 변화가 없었다. ESR 신호의 초기 증가는 수소 이탈에 의한 dangling bond의 증가에 기인하며, 다음 단계의 감소 및 안정 상태는 결정화에 따른 결정경계 영역의 감소와 결함들의 안정성에 기인하는 것으로 생각된다. 그러나 흥미로운 것은 Si1-xGex 합금의 경우 가열시간이 증가됨에 따라 Si-db(Si-dangling bond)와 Ge-db에 의한 신호가 서로 분리되어 나타났으며, 이 Si-db 스핀 밀도와 Ge-db 스핀밀도의 변화정도는 x값에 크게 의존함을 보여준 것이다. 즉 순수한 a-Si:H의 경우 Si-db 의 스핀밀도의 증가시간은 4시간 정도였고, 그리고 다시 감소하였으며, x=0.1 인 박막에서 Si-db와 Ge-db의 변화 시간은 순수 S-db 변화의 경우와 거의 유사하였다. 그러나 x=0.5 샘플에서는 Si-db의 변화가 빨라져서 0.1 시간 안에 증가되었고, Ge-db의 변화는 더 빠르게 수 분 동안에 증가 된후 다시 감소하였다. 이것은 수소의 Si에 대한 친화력 뿐 만아니라 Si-H과 Ge-H 결합에너지가 주위 원자들의 구성에 크게 영향받을 수 있는 가능성을 제시해준다.

ESR1 and PGR Gene Promoter Methylation and Correlations with Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors in Ductal and Lobular Breast Cancer

  • The aim of this work was to analyze methylation of the promoter sites of the ESR1 and PGR genes and to determine correlations with immunohistochemical expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors in ductal and lobular breast cancers. An observational, descriptive, molecular study was conducted on 20 ductal and 20 lobular breast cancer samples with immunohistochemical determination of estrogen and progesterone receptor expression. The methylation analysis of ESR1 and PGR promoter sites was carried-out by methylation-specific PCR. For correlation analysis, Kendall's tau coefficient was determined. Positive correlations were found between estrogen and progesterone receptors, estrogen receptor and unmethylated progesterone receptor, progesterone receptor, and unmethylated progesterone receptor. Negative correlations were found between estrogen receptor and methylated progesterone receptor, progesterone receptor and methylated progesterone receptor, methylated and unmethylated estrogen receptor, and methylated and unmethylated progesterone receptor. The results suggest that methylation of promoter sites of ESR1 and PGR is a relatively uncommon event in ductal and lobular breast cancer, and also suggest that the determination of epigenetic states of ESR1 and PGR could represent an alternative or complement to the histopathological expression analysis.

Detection of Gamma-Irradiated Wheat Flour and Glutinous Rice Flour by Measuring Free Radical (Free radical의 측정을 통한 감마선 조사된 밀가루와 찹쌀가루의 검지)

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to detect free radicals in irradiated wheat flour and glutinous rice flour. They were irradiated with doses of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. Free radicals detected for irradiated wheat flour and glutinous rice flour were higher than those of unirradiated ones. Since concentration of free radicals linearly increased with applied doses $(0.1{\sim}2\;kGy)$, highly positive correlation coefficients $(R^2=0.9995{\sim}0.9998)$ were obtained between irradiation doses and free radical concentrations right after irradiation. Although concentration of free radicals slowly decreased with storage time, the characteristic ESR signals of free radical in irradiated samples were observed even after 4 weeks of storage at room temperature.

Diagnostic Value of Early Inflammatory Reaction in Postoperative Infection of the Lumbar Spine

  • Objective : Our aim is to evaluate the early changes of biologic markers such as white blood cell[WBC] count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate[ESR] and C-reactive protein[CRP] in early diagnosis of postoperative infection and to differentiate infection from inflammatory reaction in lumbar spine surgery. Methods : We reviewed 330patients who had undergone spinal operations between May 1999 and October 2001. For this study, the patients were classified into two groups, which include a group that underwent spinal decompressive surgery without instrumentation[SD], and the other group that underwent fusion surgery with spinal instrumentation[SI]. And each group was also subdivided into two groups respectively, one with infection and the other without infection. We retrospectively analyzed the WBC count, ESR and CRP preoperatively and postoperatively, according to their operation type and postoperative infection history. Results : Inflammatory indices were physiologically affected by instrumentation itself. But ESR and CRP elevations were more prolonged and sustained under infection. In SD patients without infection, ESR and CRP were stabilized 5 days after surgery. In SI patients without infection, CRP was stabilized about 7days after surgery, but ESR showed sustained and variously elevated. In both SD and SI groups, the stabilization of CRP was the most reliable behavior of surgery without infection. Conclusion : C-reactive protein is most sensitive parameter for postoperative spine infection. The knowledge of the inflammatory indices and their relatively uniform patterns with or without infection offers surgeons the ability to infer the state of surgical wound.

Chronic and Low Dose Exposure to Nonlyphenol or Di(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate Alters Cell Proliferation and the Localization of Steroid Hormone Receptors in Uterine Endometria in Mice

  • Based on our preliminary results, we examined the possible role of low-dose and chronic-exposing of the chemicals those are known as endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), on the proliferation of uterine endometrium and the localization of steroid receptors. Immunohistochemical or immunofluorochemical methodology were employed to evaluate the localization of antigen identified by monoclonal antibody Ki 67 protein (MKI67), estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), estrogen receptor 2 (ESR2), and progesterone receptor (PGR). In $133{\mu}g/L$ and $1,330{\mu}g/L$ di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and $50{\mu}g/L$ nonylphenol (NP) groups, the ratio of MKI67 positive stromal cells was significantly increased but not in $500{\mu}g/L$ NP group. The ratios of MKI67 positive glandular and luminal epithelial cells were also changed by the chronic administration of NP and DEHP in tissue with dose specific manner. ESR1 signals were localized in nucleus in glandular and luminal epithelia of control group but its localization was mainly in cytoplasm in DEHP and NP administered groups. On the other hand, it was decreased at nucleus of stromal cells in $1,330{\mu}g/L$ DEHP group. The colocalization patterns of these nuclear receptors were also modified by the administration of these chemicals. Such a tissue specific and dose specific localization of ESR2 and PGR were detected as ESR1 in all the uterine endometrial tissues. These results show that the chronic lows-dose exposing of NP or DEHP modify the localization and colocalization of ESRs and PGR, and of the proliferation patterns of the endometrial tissues.

A Report on the ESR and Magnetic Structure of BixCa1-xMnO3 (x=0.15, 0.22)

  • The electron spin resonance signals of $Bi_xCa_{1-x}MnO_3$ have been acquired for two samples of x=0.15 and 0.22. ESR signal of the sample of x=0.15 clearly shows signal shape change into Dysonian with g-value shift at around 165 K so that the charge ordering temperature can be identified. The general features of ESR signal of the two samples well correlate with magnetic susceptibility measurement and also confirm the validity of former investigations.

A Study on Generative Characteristics of Radicals in Aqueous Solutions of Humic Acids using Electron Spin Resonance (전자기공명기법을 이용한 Humic Acid 용액에서의 라디칼 발생 특성에 관한 연구)

  • We studied to determine quantitatively the radical species generated from humic acid (HA) solutions by irradiation(>400 mn). The formation of radical species from HA solutions was investigated with ESR spectroscopy. We gave ESR spectrum with g-value 2.0048 and line width 0.559mT, coincided with those of the semiquinone radical. 0.1 mg/L HA solution generated the radicals of $1.2{\times}10^{-6}M$, increased with increasing HA concentration. Also, pH and ionic strength effect of the amount of the semiquinone radical generate from HA solution. In this study, we have found that the singlet oxygen affects the semiquinone radicals generation in HA solution.
