In this study, the characteristics of various electricity and high resistivity ash collection were measured at superimposed nanosecond pulse energization. The pulse was generated through the hydrogen thyratron. Superimposed pulse was nanosecond duration pulse that had fast pulse rising time 100[ns], short pulse width 500∼850[ns] and pulse fall time 400∼750[ns]. The results of this study are summarized as followings; Frist, compared with the DC ESP(electrostatic precipitator), superimposed pulse ESP could induce higher peak voltage, and had the about 30[%] reduction of ESP collection area and 50∼80[%] reduction of power consumption. showing the same efficiency. Second, enhancement factor H had 1.9∼3.6 with the increase of migration velocity.
Numerical modeling of the flow velocity fields for the near corona wire electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow was conducted. The steady, two-dimensional momentum equations have been computed for a wire-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP). The equations were solved in the conservative finite-difference form on a fine uniform rectilinear grid of sufficient resolution to accurately capture the momentum boundary layers. The numerical procedure for the differential equations was used by SIMPLEST algorithm. The Phoenics (Version 3.5.1) CFD code, coupled with Poisson's electric field, ion transport equations and the momentum equation with electric body force were used for the numerical simulation and the Chen-Kim ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model numerical results that an EHD secondary flow was clearly visible in the downstream regions of the corona wire despite the low Reynolds number for the electrode ($Re_{cw}=12.4$). Secondary flow vortices caused by the EHD increases with increasing discharge current or EHD number, hence pressure drop of ESP increases.

An indoor air cleaner consisting of a dielectric barrier discharge system and an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was experimentally investigated. The function of the dielectric barrier discharge is to precharge particles by producing nonthermal plasma before indoor air enters ESP, leading to an enhancement in dust collection efficiency. The dependence of particle size distribution on the plasma discharge was examined to understand the mechanism of the particle precharging. The plasma discharge was found to increase the electrical force of the particles, rather than agglomerate them. Coarse particles in the range of 0.5 to $5.0{\mu}m$ were observed to be easily collected by this indoor air cleaner, and the present study laid emphasis on the removal of fine particles of $0.3{\mu}m$. The collection efficiency of the fine particles was largely enhanced by the plasma discharge.

The wet electrostatic precipitator (wet ESP) is an effective control device which removes submicron particles reentrained in a collection plate and water soluble gas. However, its collection efficiency decreases, as its operation is subject to water-induced distortion of the collection electrode. In order to make up for the limitation, we modified the wet ESP system by installing electrosprayed discharge electrodes. The modified wet ESP system can wash both the collection plate and discharge electrode. As a result, we were able to fabricate a compact wet ESP with a small specific collecting area ($0.18m^2(m^3/min)$) that can accomplish a high collection efficiency of fine particles (97.1%). In addition, the device obtained a relatively low specific corona power of approximately $10W/(m^3/min)$.

In this study, we propose a small high voltage power supply, which uses a half-bridge ZCS resonant and Cockroft-Walton circuit as its ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator). This power supply transfers energy from the ZCS resonant inverter to the step-up transformer. The transformer secondary is then applied to the Cockroft-Walton circuit for generating high voltage as a discharging source of electrodes. It is highly efficient because its amount of switching losses are reduced by virtue of the current resonant half-bridge inverter, and also due to the small size, low parasitic capacitance in the transformer stage owing to the low number of winding turns of the step up transformer secondary combined with the Cockroft-Walton circuit. Using this power supply, experiments have been carried out as a function of the switching frequency and duty ratio in order to investigate the smoke removal characteristics. From these results, the best operational condition is obtained at the switching frequency of 9 kHz and the duty ratio of 50% in this ESP.

Although dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air has been applied to a wider range of aftertreatment processes for HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants), due to its high electron density and energy, its potential use as precharging dust particles is not well known. In this work, we measured size distributions of bimodal aerosol particles and estimated collection efficiency of the particles by an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) using DBD as particle charger. To examine the particle collection with DBD charger, nano size particles of NaCl(20∼100nm) and DOS (50∼500nm) were generated by a tube furnace and an atomizer, respectively. For experimental conditions of 60㎐, 11㎸ and 60 lpm, the particle collection efficiency for the hybrid system was over 85%, based on the number of particles captured.

A study of polydispersed aerosol dynamics by Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) was carried out. The log-normal particle size distribution was assumed and moment method was considered. In order to apply moment method in Deutsch-Anderson equation, Cunningham slip correction factor and Cochet's charge equation were simplified for certain range of particle size. The three parameters, which explain the particle size distribution, such as total number concentration, geometric mean diameter, and geometric standard deviation were considered to derive the analytic solution. The obtained solution was compared with available numerical results (Bai et al., 1995). The comparison of the numerical and analytic results showed a good agreement.

A numerical simulation for particle collection efficiency in a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been performed. Method of characteristics and finite differencing method (MOC-FDM) were employed to obtain electric field and space charge density, and lattice boltzmann method (LBM) was used to predict the Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow according to the ion convection. Large eddy simulation (LES) was considered for turbulent flow and particle simulation was performed by discrete element method (DEM) which considered field charging, electric force, drag force and wall-collision. One way coupling from FDM to LBM was used with small and low density particle assumption. When the charged particle collided with the collecting plate, particle-wall collision was calculated for re-entertainment effect and the effect of gravity force was considered.

Removal of particles at rich $CO_2$ condition has been important in the gas cleaning for $CO_2$ capture in Oxy-fuel combustion. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) have been widely used to remove particles in exhaust gases from present air combustion. However, few studies on characteristics of ESPs under a $CO_2$ rich gas condition have been conducted. In this study, we investigated integration of electrostatic precipitators (ESP) for removing submicron particles along with corona discharge characteristics and collection efficiency of submicron particles at $CO_2$ rich condition. The overall performance of ESP is represented by collection efficiency as function of energy consumption. The experiment results showed that higher the concentration of $CO_2$ gas, the corona discharge currents were lower at the same applied voltages and the spark over occurred at lower voltages, and the collection efficiency of submicron particles under 50, 80% $CO_2$ conditions was much lower than that under 100% Air.
An experimental study on the characteristics of collection efficiency for electrostatic precipitator under the action of acoustic energy in the gas stream was performed. In the experiment, the acoustic energy which has 2 kHz and 141 dB was applied to electrostatic precipitator inlet, and the test parameters were used in terms of the magnitude of gas velocity. From the results of experiment, the collection efficiency of ESP was increased due to acoustic energy, and this effect was much clearer at high velocity. This means that the acoustic energy can play an important role in the enlargement of specific collection area of the electrostatic precipitator.
