  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid.   • This paper presents a mixed-mode type ER(electro-rheological) engine mount, and its vibration control performance for a passenger vehicle is presented. The field-dependent yield stress of a transfo rmer oil-based ER fluid is empirically distilled in both shear and flow modes. This is then incorporated with the governing equation of motion of the proposed mixed-mode(shear mode plus flow mode) type engine mount. The damping force is analyzed with respect to the intensity of the electric field and design parameters such as electrode gap. Subsequently, the ER engine mount which is equivalent to the conventional hydraulic engine mount in terms of the damping level is designed and manufactured. Both computer simulation and experimental test are undertaken in order to evaluate vibration isolation performance. In addition, this performance is compared with that of the conventional hydraulic engine mount.

  • Many type of smart materials and control laws are available to actively adjust the structure from various external disturbances. Usually, a certain type of control law to activate a specific smart material is tell established, but the effectiveness of the control scheme is limited by the choice of the smart materials and the responses of the structure. ER fluid is adequate to provide small but arbitrary control forces at any point along the structure. It was found that active vibration control of the structure embedded with ER fluids fluidly to suppress the vibration excited with broad band frequency due to the limited change of the structure characteristics. To compensate this limited effect of the control scheme with ER fluid alone, PPF control using PZT as an actuator is added to construct a hybrid controller.

  • This paper deals with the vibration reduction of hull mount system of ship structures brought by ER smart structures. The hull mount is used to isolate the vibration of equipment from the host structures. Utilizing the tunable characteristics of ER fluids, ER inserts are made in the hull mount structure. Different types of ER inserts are proposed and the vibration characteristics are investigated. A hull mount structure is made and the influence of ER inserts are experimentally studied. An extensive modal test is empirically conducted to identify natural frequencies and mode shapes according to the applied electric field and the types of ER insert. The frequency tunable characteristics of ER inserts can be applied to many mounting structures for vibration reduction.

  • In this work, an ER clutch has been constructed and its characteristics have been evaluated by adapting an electro-rheological fluid(ERF) as an operating medium. ER fluids are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. An ER clutch system using ER fluid is a new conception device because an apparent viscosity of ER fluid can be changed by apply an electric field. As a first, Bingham properties of ER fluids are experimentally distilled as a function of electric field. We use the disk type ER clutch in which the ER fluid fills the annular space between a pair of coaxial disk electrodes and experiment results show that the measured revolution per minute was increased with the increase of the electric field. The ER fluid used in the present study consists of weight fraction 35% in zeolite suspended silicone oil.

  • Electrorheological fluids(ERFs) show a rapid and reversible increase in viscosity by applied electric field. It is called the electrorheological effect (ER effect). The reason for ER effect is the induction of an electric dipole in each particle, leading to the formation of clusters in the direction of the field, which resist fluid flow. Generally, the behavior of ER fluids has been modeled on those of Bingham fluids. But there are some differences between Bingham fluids and ER fluids. The visualization of ER fliuds are presented and ER effects by the forming, growing and breaking of clusters are discussed. In the low shear rate area, the pressure drop is measured by a pressure sensor and the formation of ER particles is visualized by video camera. The reason for the nonlinear behavior of ER fluids at low shear rate is explained through results of visualization.

  • This paper presents field-dependent dynamic characteristics of a shock damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) damper. A cylindrical type of the shock damper is designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model. The damping force is then measured with respect to the piston velocity at various electric fields. The measured damping force is incorporated with the 1DOF shock system to analyze the shock isolation performance.

전극길이 변화에 따른 실린더 형태 ER밸브의 성능고찰 (Performance Investigation of Cylindrical-Type ER Valves With Different Electrode Length)

  • This paper presents performance analyses of three types of the cylindrical-type ER(electro-rheo-logical) valves, which have different electrode length and width but same electrode area. Following the composition of silicone oil-based ER fluid, the field-dependent yield stresses are obtained from experimental investigation on the Bingham property of the ER fluid. The ER valve which is dependent on the applied electric field is devised and its theoretical model is derived. On the basis of the pressure-drop analysis, three types of the ER valves are designed and manufactured. After experimentally evaluation field-dependent pressure drops, PI controller is formulated to achieve tracking control on desired pressure drop. The controller is then experimentally implemented and tracking control performance is presented in order to demonstrate superior controllability of the ER valve. In addition, the response characteristic of the ER valve with respect to the excitation frequency of the electric fiedls is provided to show the feasibility of practical application.

  • This paper presents an active position control of a moving table utilizing ER(electro-rheological) brake and ER clutch. A transformer oil-based ER fluid is composed and its Bingham properties are evaluated with respect to electric fields. The dynamics of the actuators : ER brake and ER clutch, are identified through experiments, and subsequently the governing equation of motion of the moving table system is formulated from the governing equation, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve an accurate position control. Both simulation and experimental results and presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.

  • This Paper presents a robust design of an Electrorheological(ER) damper using Taguchi method. Taguchi method is a robust design method that determines control parameters in the presence of noise effect. Electrode length, electrode gap, base oil viscosity and the weight ratio of ER particles are chosen for the control parameters and the temperature is considered to be a noise factor. The sensitivity of each factor with signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio and analysis of variance are investigated. The analysis results show that the electrode length and base oil viscosity of the ER fluid mostly affect the damping force in the absence of electric field. On the other hand, when the voltage is applied to the ER damper, the electrode length and the weight ratio of ER fluid exhibit significant effect. Based on the Taguchi method, an optimal configuration was designed and the robustness of the designed ER damper was validated by comparing the analysis and experimental results.
