  • Interest is growing in applying simulation models for the South Texas conditions, to better assess crop water use and production with different crop management practices. The Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was used to evaluate its application as a decision support tool for irrigation management of com (Zea mays L.) in South Texas of the U.S. We measured actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using a weighing lysimeter, soil moisture using a neutron probe, and grain yield by field sampling. The model was then validated using the measured data. Simulated ETc using the Hargreaves-Samani equation was in agreement with the lysimeter measured ETc. Simulated soil moisture generally matched with the measured soil moisture. The EPIC model simulated the variability in grain yield with different irrigation regimes with $r^2$value of 0.69 and root mean square error of $0.5\;ton\;ha^{-1}$. Simulation results with farm data demonstrate that EPIC can be used as a decision support tool for com under irrigated conditions in South Texas. EPIC appears to be effective in making long term and pre-season decisions for irrigation management of crops, while reference ET and phenologically based crop coefficients can be used for inseason irrigation management.

  • Ontological knowledge modelling of epic texts, though being an established research arena backed by concrete multilingual and multicultural works, still suffers from two key shortcomings. Firstly, all epic ontological models developed till date have been designed following ad-hoc methodologies, most often combining existing general purpose ontology development methodologies. Secondly, none of the ad-hoc methodologies consider the potential reuse of existing epic ontological models for enrichment, if available. This paper presents, as a unified solution to the above shortcomings, the design and development of GOMME - the first dedicated methodology for iterative ontological modelling of epics, potentially extensible to works in different research arenas of digital humanities in general. GOMME is grounded in transdisciplinary foundations of canonical norms for epics, knowledge modelling best practices, application satisfiability norms, and cognitive generative questions. It is also the first methodology (in epic modelling but also in general) to be flexible enough to integrate, in practice, the options of knowledge modelling via reuse or from scratch. The feasibility of GOMME is validated via a first brief implementation of ontological modelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata by reusing an existing ontology. The preliminary results are promising, with the GOMME-produced model being both ontologically thorough and competent performance-wise.

  • The EPIC model was applied to assess the environmental impacts of two contrasting tillage systems (conventional versus ridge tillage). The model was calibrated with field data and validated with another set of data. The errors between the 12-year predicted and observed means or medians were less than 10% for nearly all of the environmental indicators, with the major exception of a nearly 44% over prediction of the N surface runoff loss for Watershed 2. The predicted N leaching rates, N losses in surface runoff, and sediment loss clearly showed that EPIC was able to simulate the long-term impacts of tillage and residue cover on these processes.

  • In this work the implementation of a production-level port of the Microplane constitutive model for concrete into the EPIC code is described. The port follows guidelines outlined in the Material Model Module (MMM) standard used in EPIC to insure a seamless interface with the existing code. Certain features of the model were not implemented using the MMM interface due to compatibility reasons; for example, a separate module was developed to initialize, store and update internal state variables. Objective strain and deformation measures for use in the material model were also implemented into the code. Example calculations were performed and illustrate the veracity of this new implementation.

  • Focusing on the hermeneutic instability of a key word of Paradise Lost, "wander," this study attempts to situate John Milton's early modern epic in the longue $dur{\acute{e}}e$ historical transition from seignorial to capitalist mode of production, especially the displacement and reorganization of producer population, a corollary of early phase of modernization. The historic experience of vagrancy and its normalization, and the concomitant shift of the primary human sociability from given to voluntary bonds, I suggest, shape and inform Milton's early modern rewriting of the Biblical story of the fall and his revising of the heroic epic romance into a plebeian romance of a wandering, companionate couple. While building on the critical consensus on this poem's deliberate distancing from the tradition of classical epic and chivalric romance, this essay argues that Milton re-appropriates and re-channels the aspirational aspect of chivalric wandering, or mobility, for his plebeian heroes, a companionate conjugal couple. The hermeneutic instability of the word wander, this essay suggests, captures the duality of the historic experience of vagrancy, both the tragic experience of displacement and the liberational and uplifting dimension of that experience.

  • Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictée proliferates with many pronouns. Whether the various subjects invoked in Dictée refer to a single common figure remains ambiguous. By paying close attention to the ambiguity of narrative voice, this essay examines how the creation of narrative ambiguity in Dictée is closely linked to the author's employment of the second person voice. This essay particularly attends to how Cha explores the narrative possibilities of the second person voice in the text's "Calliope/Epic Poetry" section in order to reflect upon experiences of exile and migration on a transnational scale. Through the intimacy and narrative ambiguity of the second person voice, Cha is able to create an epic on migration that is not only transnational in scope, but also invites the reader to engage with the self-alienating aspects of exilic and immigrant life in an unusually intimate yet powerful manner.

  • The mock-heroic, "the single most characteristic and individual literary form of the neoclassical era," as Brean Hammond puts it, epitomizes the process of the "novelization" of the 18th-century British culture. Bakhtin mentions that when the novel reigns supreme, almost all the remaining genres are "novelized"; Hammond borrows the term "novelization" from Bakhtin and uses it as a "shorthand way of referring to the cultural forces that render epic anachronistic." Indebted to Hammond's apprehension of novelization, this paper reads Alexander Pope's Rape of the Lock in the context of novelization, particularly focusing on 'probability,' 'contemporaneity' and 'domesticity,' three important signatures of the novelization of the 18th-century British culture. First, Sylph as a counterpart of god in epic is presented in The Rape of the Lock just as a helpless, fictional and irrelevant thing that hardly affects the empirical world. It indicates how the mock-epic 'mocks' the classical world of 'epic' and stands closer to the world of the novel. Second, Pope's poem displays an accurate picture of the author's contemporary reality, a capital concern of the novel, such as imperialism, consumer society, commodity fetishism, or reification. Lastly, The Rape of the Lock lays out the construction of modern gender ideology, another quintessential interest of the novel, particularly with the fixed female image of a coquette. It efficiently silences and nullifies Belinda, a typical coquette, who stands as a threatening force to the ascendent domestic ideology.

  • The purpose of this study is to define Juan Mayorga's play Hamelin as a Post-Epic Theatre and to study the practical directing technique for Hamelin as a Post-Epic Theatre. Post-Epic Theatre, which appeared after the Post-drama, has the purpose of presenting social issues, communicating interactively between the actors and the audience, and making the audience think about the issues presented by the techniques of immersion and alienation. To this end, after examining the theoretical background of the Post-Epic Theatre, the characteristics of the Post-Epic Theatre of Hamelin were identified and based on these features, '1. Building a visual image based on a Cubistic multifocal concept' and '2. The concept of directing was derived from reinforcing Meta-drama through role-playing'. Next, the actual directing technique was discussed, focusing on the chain action of immersion and alienation that occurs in the form of communication between actors and audiences. '1. Presenting the characteristics of the work through Post-Epic Theatre scenography', '2. Co-existence of actors and characters', '3. Building and utilizing body-centered gestus' are them. As a result, demanding an active attitude from the audience, various experiences such as critical thinking of the audience, strengthening the characteristics of post-epic dramas, and active meaning creation were made possible.

  • The Altai Humanities Belt connecting Siberia to Central Asia is very important to the history of civilization. It had a huge influence on the formation of an ancient civilization in the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, a variety of studies have been carried out in the field of folklore and anthropology as well as archeology. One of these studies is about the oral epic. The oral epic remains in the form of a unique transmission in Korea, but it wasn't that long ago when it was noted as the component of the Altai Humanities Belt. In that context, some epics from Central Asia, Mongolia, and Siberia were introduced to Korea. This preliminary investigation is conducted to introduce the oral epic Olonkho from Yakutia in Siberia to Korean academia. Although it was revealed recently, Olonkho is highly valued. The epic study has been buried from the Western point of view, but Olonkho is expected to provide a global perspective to the field of epic study. Above all, it contains a very significant clue to a new study because the content and the style of performance are considerably different from those of the West. Additionally, the original form is relatively well preserved. In particular, it explains how human thinking and behaviors have changed in the transition from the mythical age to the heroic age. This change appears in the ethnic history of Yakutia, as well as in the formation process for all Altai countries around the 10th century. Therefore, this preliminary investigation will be a foundation to facilitate the translation of the voluminous Olonkho into Korean, and to conduct full-fledged research on it. In particular, it can motivate a study on the differences and similarities in comparison to the tradition of oral epics between Central Asia and the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, it will serve as a foundation for the formation of the Altai Humanities Belt.
