  • As a series of tile studies of EPDM-Polymer blends, tile experiment are concentrated to the investigation of the physical properties of tile EPDM-NR-SBR blends. The results are shown as follows: 1. In blending, tensile strength decreased with increase in EPDM contents, especially the ratio of EPDM/NR-SBR is 75/25. 2. Elongation and tear strength were much influenced by blending, especially the ratio of EPDM/NR-SBR is 50/50. 3. Ozone resistance is much improved after blending. It was effective more than tile ratio of EPDM/NR-SBR is 25/75. 4. Aging resistance is much improved after blending. It was effective more than the ratio of EPDM/NR-SBR is 50/50. 5. Hardness increased with increase in EPDM contents and on the other hand, abrasion resistance decreased.

  • EPDM 발포체 제조의 충전제로 폐타이어 분쇄고무와 카본블랙을 각각 사용하면서 가황특성 및 기계적 물성을 조사하여 이들을 비교하였다. 그 결과 충전제의 함량이 증가함에 따라 가황시간이 짧아짐을 알았다. 분쇄고무를 충전제로 사용한 경우 충전제의 함량이 30 phr 이상이 되면 발포배율, 인장강도 및 신율이 급격히 감소하였다. 반면에 카본블랙을 사용한 경우는 70 phr이 사용될 때까지 인장강도 및 신율의 급격한 변화는 없었다. 이들을 고려할 때, 분쇄고무의 사용량은 30 phr 미만으로 제한시켜야 함을 알았으며 이는 낮은 계면 접착력 때문이었다. 제조된 EPDM 발포체는 우수한 내노화성을 나타내었다.

Study on Surface Chemical Structure and Mechanical Properties of EPDM Rubber with Microwave Irradiation Time

  • Recently, microwaves have been used for desulfurization because they can selectively dissociate C-S and S-S bonds present in vulcanized rubber. In this study, we investigated the changes in structural and physical properties of EPDM (Ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber by irradiating it with microwaves for different durations. The surface chemical composition of the irradiated EPDM rubber was analyzed by FT-IR, XPS, and EDS analyses. It was confirmed by XPS that C-S and S-S S2p peak heights greatly decreased when microwave irradiation was performed for more than 5 min. In the EPDM sample irradiated with microwaves for 10 min, the number of S-O bonds significantly increased owing to oxidation. As the microwave irradiation time was increased, SEM images showed cracks and voids on the EPDM surface. The 20% decomposition temperature of the EPDM rubber sample was investigated by TGA, and it was found to be about $435.23^{\circ}C$ for the EPDM rubber irradiated for 10 min. The crosslinking density of the EPDM rubber was determined by measuring the degree of swelling, and the highest value was observed for the E5 sample irradiated for 5 min. The degree of swelling of the E10 sample irradiated for 10 min was lower than that of the E5 sample. These results indicate that when irradiated with microwaves for more than a certain time, desulfurization occurs and the side chain of the EPDM rubber dissociates and forms additional crosslinking bonds.

Effect of Precured EPDM on the Property of Magneto-rheological Elastomer Based on NR/EPDM Blend

  • Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials in which the inherent stiffness and damping properties can be changed by the influence of an external magnetic field. The magneto-rheological (MR) effect depends on the orientation characteristics of the dispersed magneto-responsible particles (MRPs) in the matrix. In this study, natural rubber (NR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) were blended and used as a matrix of an MRE. EPDM was pre-cured before blending with NR. The Mooney viscosity, curing characteristics, and mechanical properties were analyzed with various pre-curing conditions of EPDM and the NR/EPDM blend. The results show that excellent mechanical properties of the NR/EPDM blend-based MRE were obtained when the pre-curing time of EPDM was 60 min. The aging property of the NR-based MRE was improved by the introduction of pre-cured EPDM. Also, the anisotropic MRE showed a higher MR effect than that of the isotropic MRE.

실리콘고무 함량이 EPDM 고무의 열적 안정성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Silicone Rubber Content on Thermal Stabilities of EPDM/Silicone Blends)

  • 실리콘 고무 (SR) 함량이 EPDM/SR 블랜드의 열안정성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하기 위하여 질소 분위기하에서 TGA 열분석을 수행하여 열분해온도, 열분해 활성화에너지 ($E_d$), 열분해 후 잔여량 등 열안정성 인자들을 알아보았다. 실험 결과, SR 첨가량이 10 wt%일 경우 블랜드의 열분해 곡선은 순수한 EPDM 고무와 비슷한 경향을 보였으나, SR 함량이 증가함에 따라 블랜드의 열분해는 더 높은 온도에서 진행되었다. 순수한 EPDM 고무인 경우 $E_d$ 값은 처음에는 서서히 감소하다가 분해분율이 20 wt%이상에서는 거의 일정한 값을 나타내었다. SR 함량이 10-20 wt%일 경우 블렌드의 $E_d$은 순수한 EPDM 고무의 경우보다 높은 값을 나타내었으며, 분해분율이 증가함에 따라 점차 감소하였다. 반면에 SR 첨가량이 30 wt%일 경우 블렌드의 $E_d$은 순수한 EPDM 고무의 경우보다 낮은 값을 나타내었으며, 분해분율이 증가함에 따라 서서히 감소하였다. 또한, $800^{\circ}C$에서의 열분해 후 잔여량은 SR 함량이 증가함에 따라 증가하였으며, 이는 분해된 실록산 그룹이 경화된 수지의 표면에 보호막을 형성하여 열전달 및 확산을 제한한 것으로 판단된다.

  • The physical properties of rubber blend between natural rubber(NR) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer(EPDM) were investigated as a study of EPDM composite materials. For EPDM/NR blends, the effects of ethylene and diene contents in EPDM, blend ratio, dicumyl peroxide(DCP) curing system on the physical properties, interfacial adhesion force and dynamic crack growth etc. were studied. EPDM/NR blends loaded with carbon black were prepared by mechanical mixing and cured by plate heating cure press. Crosslinking density was measured by swelling method with toluene. The physical properties of all blends were measured with Instron, fatigue to failure(FTF), Demattia flex cracking tester(DMFC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. As the ethylene and diene contents in EPDM increased, the physical properties, such as dynamic crack growth, adhesion to other component were increased too. Interfacial adhesion force of EPDM/NR blends to dissimilar layer was improved by the use of optimum peroxide curing system.

  • EPDM, IIR, 그리고 BIIR 복합체를 열노화시켜 가교밀도 변화를 조사하였다. 노화 시간이 증가하거나 노화온도가 올라갈수록 EPDM 복합체의 가교밀도는 증가하였으나, 고온에서 장기간 노화된 IIR과 BIIR 복합체의 가교밀도는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. EPDM 복합체의 가교밀도 변화에 대한 활성화 에너지는 BIIR 복합체보다 높았다. 실험결과는 알릴 수소의 수, 아연 복합체의 활성화, 입체 가리움 효과, 그리고 고무 사슬의 산화로 설명하였다.

  • 4종류의 고무 즉, 천연고무(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer(EPDM), brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS)의 영(Young) 탄성율을 비롯한 인장특성과 인열강도를 여러가지 가교도와 시험온도에서 측정하였다. 과가황(over-cure)의 영향을 조사하기 위해 과가교 고무컴파운드의 인장강도와 팽윤(swelling) 거동도 조사하였다. 모든 고무컴파운드에 대해 영 탄성율(E)은 가교도와 선형적인 비례관계를 보였다. EPDM이 가장 높은 기울기를 그리고 BIMS가 가장 낮은 기울기를 보였고, NR과 SBR은 이들 사이의 값을 나타내었다. 인열강도 Gc는 NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM의 순으로 나타났다. 과가교에 따라 NR과 SBR의 가교도는 감소한 반면, BIMS는 오히려 증가하였고, EPDM은 거의 변하지 않았다.

  • As a series of the studies of EPDM-Polymer blends, the experiments are concentrated to the investigation of the physical properties of the EPDM-SBR blends. The results are shown as follows: 1. Tensile strength decreased with increase in EPDM contents and the decreasing value was good results than NR blending. 2. 고분자재료의 물성에 미치는 환경인자의 영향: 오일 및 오존반응시간 (Effect of Environmental Factors on the Properties of Polymeric Material : Oil and Ozone Reaction Time)

  • The purpose of this experiment is to prepare ethylene propylene diene terpolymer(EPDM)/ acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR) blend which represents good environmental resistant properties including favorable oil and ozone resistance. With incorporation of EPDM, NBR and other ingredients, the rubber and chemical additives were mixed by mechanical method such as Banbury mixer and open 2-roll mill. Then rubber vulcanizates were manufactured by hot press and mechanical properties, oil and ozone resistance of the test specimens were measured. The oil resistance and ozone resistance of EPDM and NBR, respectively, is remarkably improved by blending EPDM with NBR. The optimum results of oil and zone resistant characteristics were obtained at EPDM/NBR(=25/75 wt%) composition ratio.
