The graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile-EPDM-styrene (AES) was investigated under various reaction conditions such as the concentration of initiator, the content of diene and viscosity of EPDM, and the concentration of solvents. The conversion increased but the molecular weight and the rubber particle size decreased with the concentration of initiator. The graft ratio(GR) increased at low concentrations of the initiator but, after the maximum value, it gradually decreased with the concentration of initiator. Toluene as a single solvent gave the highest conversion and the mixture of ethyl benzene and toluene was better than toluene. The rubber particle size increased with the viscosity of EPDM and the graft ratio and the number of rubber particles with occluded SANs increased with the content of diene.

The EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubbers used for manufacturing engine radiator hoses can be degraded by locally generated electrical stress in addition to thermal and mechanical stresses. This study presents an accelerated life prediction of the EPDM rubber under electrochemical stresses using the Arrhenius formula under various aging temperatures($60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$). The modified life prediction formula considers the relationship between the gradient($E_a/R$) and the Arrhenius constant(C). The effects of tensile strain(5%, 10%) on the life of these rubbers were investigated. The aging temperature influences EPDM rubber life, and tensile strain was predicted. It was confirmed that the modified life prediction was within the data deviation level of the test.
Tensile properties including Young's modulus and tear strength were measured for four different rubber compounds; natural rubber(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS) as a function of temperature and degree of cure. To see the effect of over cure, a measurement was made of the tensile strength and swelling behavior of the over-cured rubber compounds. Young's modulus, E, was found to have linear dependency on the degree of cure for all rubber compounds. EPDM and BIMS showed the highest and lowest slopes, respectively. The slope of NR and SBR lay between EPDM and BIMS. Tear strength, Gc, decreased in the order of NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM. As the cure time was extended the degree of cure of NR and SBR decreased, while that of BIMS increased. EPDM showed little change in the degree of cure.
In this study, for a radiator hose made of carbon black filled EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubber, a measuring method of crosslink density was established to analyze the aging behaviors under thermo-oxidative stresses. At $125^{\circ}C$, the crosslink density of the rubber specimens decreased slightly in the initial stage, but increased with increasing the aging time. Such variation in crosslink density was similar to that of tensile strength. This might be due to the formation of sulphoxide crosslinks as well as to additional crosslinks made by the reaction of unvalcunized sulfurs. A high temperature aging of rubber specimens at $180^{\circ}C$ caused a slight increase in crosslink density while it did a large decrease in tensile strength and elongation. With aging at high temperature, the formation of carbonyl groups in EPDM molecule chain and formation of sulphoxide crosslink, rather than the crosslink density variation itself, had a large influence on such changes in mechanical property.
The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Mooney viscosity, cure behaviors, compression set and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. Dynamic characteristics of the entire blends determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transitions (T'$_{g}$s), -43$^{\circ}C$ and -4$^{\circ}C$ for NBR and EPDM, respectively. The tan $\delta$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with increasing NBR content. It was also found that the optimum cure time was significantly decreased with loading of NBR.
The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were prepared from an open 2-roll mill following the conventional rubber blend method, and then cure characteristics, mechanical properties and ozone resistance were subsequently examined. With incorporation of SBR the torque value of the EPDM and SBR blends showed a gradual increase in the cure curve. The maximum torque value was obtained with lowest level at 25wt% of SBR and it was increased linearly with more than 25wt%. As the SBR loading increased scorch time and optimum cure time decreased. Hardness represented a maximum at 50wt% of SBR. However upper and lower than that value it decreased. It was found that the unfavorable characteristics of ozone resistance of pure SBR was significantly improved through the blending of SBR with EPDM.
The surface of Alnico, one of the industrial dust waste, was treated with 1,3,5-trivinyl-1,3,5-trimethylcyclotrisilazane (VMS) as a surface treating agent and used as the filler for vibration isolator rubber. Maleated EPDM prepared from bulk polymerization of EPDM with maleic anhydride was copolymerized with ${\alpha},{\omega}$-bis(3-aminopropyl)polydimethylsiloxane to obtain maleated EPDM-polydimethylsiloxane copolymer (MEPDM-PDMS). EPDM/Alnico/MEPDM-PDMS vibration isolator rubber was prepared from compounding with Alnico treated with surface treating agent, 25 and 50 phrs to EPDM, respectvely based on 1 to 10 wt% of MEPDM-PDMS to EPDM. From the measurement of the thermal properties to the rubber, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) for the rubber containing maleated EPDM-PDMS copolymer was slightly lower temperature, $33^{\circ}C$ than EPDM rubber, and also DMA results showed higher tan ${\delta}$ peak to the rubber prepared from compounding with EPDM-PDMS copolymer. From the results, rubber prepared using EPDM-PDMS copolymer had better vibration isolator property.

Characteristic of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator used in a solid rocket motor chamber was investigated at 1,030 psi, 35.86 s and 1,406 psi, 36.63 s. Surface status after test was similar each other and thermal destruction depth was 4.10 mm and 4.18 mm, respectively. Kinetic constant ${\xi}$, ${\zeta}$ and thermal destruction velocity $V_{TD}$ were also similar. It was concluded that characteristics of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator were not affected by change of chamber pressure.
Rubber products are aged like human complexion by the attack of oxygen, ultra violet, ozone, etc.. Aging is very important and also very complicated phenomenon to understand. This may explain the rarity of papers on this subject. In this study, we tried to understand the aging behavior of EPDM compared to that of natural rubber. We also compared the sulfur vulcanized system to the peroxide vulcanized one. In our experiment, the peroxide vulcanizates were more advantageous in aging than the sulfur vulcanizates. The authors belived that this study about the high performance EPDM would be applicable to rubber industry.
Material characteristics and lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, the material test and accelerated heat aging test were carried out to predict the useful life of NBR and EPDM rubber mount for a compression motor which is used in a refrigerator. In order to investigate the effects of heat-aging on the material properties, crosslink density, modulus at 100% strain, stress-strain curves were obtained from uniaxial and equi-biaxial tensile tests. The change of compression set were used for assessment of the useful life and the time to threshold value were plotted against the reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. The useful life at variable temperatures are obtained in the Arrhenius relationship.
