  • We studied the liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities and the generation of pretilt angles with ion beam exposure on a diamond like carbon (DLC) layer. A high pretilt angle of 3.5$^{\circ}$ with ion beam exposure on the DLC layer can be obtained. A high pretilt angle in NLC by ion beam alignment method on the DLC layer can be achieved.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the Ultraviolet (UV) alignment method on a a-C:H thin -film , and investigated electro-optical performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic (TN)- liquid crystal display (LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV irradiation on a a-C:H thin -film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. The good electro-optical (EO)characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface for 1min.

  • A novel series of polystyrene (PS) beads containing various sulfonamide groups was prepared, and their chemical stabilities in an aqueous solution were tested in order to determine their ability to inactivate microbes. By reacting aminomethyl polystyrene (AM PS) beads or carboxy polystyrene beads with various benzenesulfonic acid derivatives, the sulfonamide groups were introduced on the PS beads. The characteristics of the product beads were analyzed by elementary analysis after the substitution of various sulfonamide groups. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and FT-IR analysis were used to analyze the elemental functional group composition, respectively. The hydrolytic stabilities of the PS beads containing various sulfonamide groups along with the relationship between the swelling ratio and their hydrophilicity were investigated. The antibacterial activity of the beads was determined by their ability to inactivate E. coli. This study reports that PS beads containing sulfonamide groups had lasting antibacterial efficacy over a satisfactory period, whilst maintaining their chemical stabilities against hydrolysis. The 8 synthesized polymer beads exhibited antibacterial ability.

  • We proposed a novel triode-type carbon nanotube field emitter arrays in which extracted gate is surrounded by CNT emitters. We carried out 3-dimensional numerical calculations of electrostatic potential for the proposed CNT-FEAs using the finite element method and compared the results with those obtained from the structure of conventional CNT-FEAs. It was found that the proposed structure could reduce the turn-on voltage for electron emission and improve beam focusing.

  • Bis-(p-bromopheny)phosphate(BBPP) , which serves as flame retardant for PET fabric, was synthesized from phenol and phosphorus oxychloride, and from bromine. In order to investigate the flame retardancy of BBPP, PET fabrics were steam-cured with diluted BBPP solution. The following conclusions were drawn : 1. Flame retardancy of PET fabrics treated with BBPP was excellent, and optimal treating condition was 10% concentration of flame retardant at $170^{\circ]C$ 2. Clark softness and tensile strength before and after the laundering of PET fabrics treated with flame retardant remained nearly unchanged.
