Immersive Learning Technologies in English Language Teaching: A Systematic Review

  • The aim of this study was to examine the trends (e.g., the distribution of the studies by year, country, research methods, and participants' education level) and fundamental findings [e.g., interaction in Virtual Reality (VR) environments, educational content through VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, learning environment in AR, etc.] regarding immersive learning technologies such as VR and AR in English Language Teaching (ELT) between 2010 and 2019. Employing a systematic review research methodology, data was gathered from 59 academic articles published in the following databases: EBSCOhost, ERIC, Web of Science, and Taylor & Francis. The studies were analyzed using a content analysis approach, and findings demonstrated that immersive learning technologies in ELT came to prominence in 2017. Mixed methods research was the most widely employed research method. The most studied language skill was vocabulary for AR and speaking for VR. The results also revealed advantages and challenges with regards to the use of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Further analysis illustrated the findings related to characteristics of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Based on this review, research and design implications for researchers and practitioners are presented.

  • MISSING Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has not been discovered and unknown whether it crashed on the ground or under the sea. There are a couple of emergency equipment in the airplane not only outside of airplane but inside airplane such as ELT(Emergency Locator Transmitter). Since the ELT developed, it is required to be installed in the airplane for regulation requirement. However, despite of its important function, it is not working properly or shows wide search range for rescue during the crash or ditching on the water. I would like to propose how to over come the up-to-dated position data just before the event. Connecting with ADIRS or GPS which is installed internal airplane system will help to reduce the rescue time for survival passenger.

Issues of EFL Educational Practice in Korea: A Conceptual Proposal for an Alternative

  • This paper, drawing on various secondary sources related to bilingualism and bilingual education, proposes a semi-CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) model as an initial option for Korea's ELT instruction at a primary level, with a subsequent application to a secondary level in mind. It is reported that the current pedagogy focused on early English education and communicative language teaching does not meet the needs of students' EFL proficiency. The main reasons for this are considered to lie in the social and educational environment which impedes EFL students' meaningful and authentic communication in target language. Thus, by exploring a conceptual approach to such a problem, this paper suggests a paradigm of integrating content and language for a reasonable solution.

영어 교재 분석 평가의 사례 (A case study of ELT textbook analysis)

  • The aim of this study is to propose a systematic way of evaluating competing ELT textbook series. Three stages of evaluation procedures were employed: A sample of two sets of English textbook series for young learners were first analysed by five trained textbook evaluators using a checklist. Second, based on the results of analysis, evaluative discussion was carried out. Third, two independent evaluators conducted impressionistic evaluation on the series. The procedure employed in this materials evaluation process can be adapted in choosing series of textbooks. Since not many studies have dealt the evaluation of textbook series by multiple evaluators, the method presented in this study can be referred to and applied by materials evaluators in other contexts.

Immersive Learning Technologies in English Language Teaching: A Meta-Analysis

  • The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of the learning outcomes of immersive learning technologies in English language teaching (ELT). This study examined 12 articles, yielding a total of 20 effect sizes. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) program was employed for data analysis. The findings revealed that the overall effect size was 0.84, implying a large effect size. Additionally, the mean effect sizes of the dependent variables revealed a large effect size for both the cognitive and affective domains. Furthermore, the study analyzed the impact of moderator variables such as sample scale, technology type, tool type, work type, program type, duration (sessions), the degree of immersion, instructional technique, and augmented reality (AR) type. Among the moderators, the degree of immersion was found to be statistically significant. In conclusion, the study results suggested that immersive learning technologies had a positive impact on learning in ELT.

Some (Re)views on ELT Research: With Reference to World Englishes and/or English Lingua Franca

  • As far as the recent ELT research concerned, it seems to have been no hot ‘theoretical’ issues, but ‘practical’ ones in general: e.g., learners and learning, components of proficiency, correlates of L2 learning, etc. This paper focuses on the theme given above, with a special reference to the sub-title: specifically, 1) World English, world Englishes and world's lingua franca; 2) ENL, ESL and EFL; 3) Grammars, style manuals, dictionaries and media; 4) Pronunciation models: RP, BBC model and General American, Network Standard; 5) Lexical, grammatical variations and discourse grammars; 6) Beliefs and subjective theories in foreign language research; 7) Dilemma among radical, canonical and eclectic views. In conclusion, the author offers a modest proposal: we need to appeal to our own experience, intention, feeling and purpose, that is, our identity to express “our own selves” in our contexts toward the world anywhere, if not sounding authentic enough, but producing it plausibly well. It is time for us (with our ethno-cultural autonomy) to need to be complementary to and parallel with its native speakers' linguistic-cultural authenticity in terms of the broadest mutual understanding.

저압직류배전 시스템에 적용되는 슈퍼캐패시터용 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터 (Bidirectional DC/DC Converter with Supercapacitor for LVDC System)

  • 본 논문에서는 마이크로그리드 시스템의 기존 교류 배전망에서 전력 전송 손실을 개선하기 위해 직류 배전망으로 설계하면서 전력을 저장하는 배터리부와 상기 배터리부로부터 LVDC망 전압을 사용자가 설정 및 설계한 전압에 대응하며 유지하기 위한 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터에 대해서 연구하였다. 기존에 사용하던 방식과는 다르게 슈퍼캐패시터를 추가하여 고속, 고출력의 충방전을 할 수 있으며, 이러한 특징으로 인하여 전력품질 개선과 비상시 전력을 공급할 수 있는 장접을 갖게 되었다. 제어기는 PI 제어기를 적용하였으며, PWM 게이팅 신호를 만들어 스위칭 소자를 제어하였다. 매트랩 시뮬링크를 이용하여 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터의 회로를 설계하고 구동 알고리즘을 적용해서 시스템을 구성하여, 슈퍼캐패시터를 이용한 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터의 역할 가능성을 시뮬레이션을 통하여 검증하였다.
