Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings taken during the perception of music tempo contain information that estimates the tempo of a music piece. If information about this tempo stimulus in EEG recordings can be extracted and classified, it can be effectively used to construct a music-based brain-computer interface. This study proposes a novel convolutional recurrent attention model (CRAM) to extract and classify features corresponding to tempo stimuli from EEG recordings of listeners who listened with concentration to the tempo of musics. The proposed CRAM is composed of six modules, namely, network inputs, two-dimensional convolutional bidirectional gated recurrent unit-based sample encoder, sample-level intuitive attention, segment encoder, segment-level intuitive attention, and softmax layer, to effectively model spatiotemporal features and improve the classification accuracy of tempo stimuli. To evaluate the proposed method's performance, we conducted experiments on two benchmark datasets. The proposed method achieves promising results, outperforming recent methods.
In this paper, we propose a method to extract and classify features of multi-channel ElectroEncephalo Graphy (EEG) that change according to various musical tempo stimuli. In the proposed method, a 3D convolutional bidirectional gated recurrent neural network extracts spatio-temporal and long time-dependent features from the 3D EEG input representation transformed through the preprocessing. The experimental results show that the proposed tempo stimuli classification method is superior to the existing method and the possibility of constructing a music-based brain-computer interface.
Classification of human thought is an emerging research field that may allow us to understand human brain functions and further develop advanced brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. In the present study, we introduce a new approach to classify various mental states from noninvasive electrophysiological recordings of human brain activity. We utilized the full spatial and spectral information contained in the electroencephalography (EEG) signals recorded while a subject is performing a specific mental task. For this, the EEG data were converted into a 2D spatiospectral pattern map, of which each element was filled with 1, 0, and -1 reflecting the degrees of event-related synchronization (ERS) and event-related desynchronization (ERD). We evaluated the similarity between a current (input) 2D pattern map and the template pattern maps (database), by taking the inner-product of pattern matrices. Then, the current 2D pattern map was assigned to a class that demonstrated the highest similarity value. For the verification of our approach, eight participants took part in the present study; their EEG data were recorded while they performed four different cognitive imagery tasks. Consistent ERS/ERD patterns were observed more frequently between trials in the same class than those in different classes, indicating that these spatiospectral pattern maps could be used to classify different mental states. The classification accuracy was evaluated for each participant from both the proposed approach and a conventional mental state classification method based on the inter-hemispheric spectral power asymmetry, using the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). An average accuracy of 68.13% (${\pm}9.64%$) was attained for the proposed method; whereas an average accuracy of 57% (${\pm}5.68%$) was attained for the conventional method (significance was assessed by the one-tail paired $t$-test, $p$ < 0.01), showing that the proposed simple classification approach might be one of the promising methods in discriminating various mental states.
Every movement, perception and thought we perform is associated with distinct neural activation patterns. Neurons in the brain communicate with each other by sending electrical impulses that produce currents. These currents give rise to electrical fields that can be measured outside the head. It shows some variation on the electroencephalographic signals. In recent devices, the EEG signals measured from head surface are a sum of all the momentary brain activation. With these EEG signals, it is difficult to distinguish the patterns correlated with a certain event from the signals. However, the system must discriminate some patterns with some events especially for any kind of device as a brain control interface system. In this experiment, the sensory-motor cortex of humans has been extensively studied. Activation related to several movements on both sides of the sensory-motor cortices in imaginary. The activation patterns during imagination of several movements resemble the activation patterns during preparation of movements. The result represents the system based on the optimal filters discriminated at least 60% of mental imageries.

This study describes a new technique for human sensibility evaluation using electroencephalogram(EEG). Production of EEG is assumed to be linear. The linear predictor coefficients and the linear cepstral coefficients of EEG are used as the feature parameters of sensibility and pattern classification performances of them are compared. Using the better parameter, a human sensibility evaluation algorithm is designed. The obtained results are as follows. The linear predictor coefficients showed the better performance in pattern classification than the linear cepstral coefficients. Then, using the linear predictor coefficients as the feature parameter, a human sensibility evaluation algorithm is developed at the base of a multi-layer neural network. This algorithm showed 90% of accuracy in comfortableness evaluation in spite of fluctuations in statistics of EEG signal.
Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a communication pathway between devices (computers) and human brain. It treats brain signals in real-time basis and discriminates some information of what human brain is doing. In this work, we develop a EEG BCI system using a feature extraction such as common spatial pattern (CSP) and a classifier using Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FLDA). Two-class EEG motor imagery movement datasets with both cued and uncued are tested to verify its feasibility.

In this paper, we explored the new method for extracting feature from the electroencephalography (EEG) signal based on linear regression technique with the orthonormal polynomial bases. At first, EEG signals from electrodes around motor cortex were selected and were filtered in both spatial and temporal filter using band pass filter for alpha and beta rhymic band which considered related to the synchronization and desynchonization of firing neurons population during motor imagery task. Signal from epoch length 1s were fitted into linear regression with Legendre polynomials bases and extract the linear regression weight as final features. We compared our feature to the state of art feature, power band feature in binary classification using support vector machine (SVM) with 5-fold cross validations for comparing the classification accuracy. The result showed that our proposed method improved the classification accuracy 5.44% in average of all subject over power band features in individual subject study and 84.5% of classification accuracy with forward feature selection improvement.
BCI system integrates control or telecommunication system with generating electric signals in scalp itself after signal acquisition. This system detect a movement of EEG at real time, can control an electron equipment using a generated signal through EEG movement or software-based processor. In this paper, we deal with removing and separating artifacts induceced from measurement when brain-computer interface system that analyzes recognizes EEG signals occurred from various mental states. In this paper, we proposed a method of EEG classification and an artifact interval detection using bisection mathematical modeling in the EEG classification process for BCI system implementation.

An optimal feature selection and extraction procedure is an important task that significantly affects the success of brain activity analysis in brain-computer interface (BCI) research area. In this paper, a novel method for extracting the optimal feature from electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is proposed. At first, a student's-t-statistic method is used to normalize and to minimize statistical error between EEG measurements. And, 2D time-frequency data set from the raw EEG signal was extracted using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) as a raw feature, standard deviations and mean of 2D time-frequency matrix were extracted as a optimal EEG feature vector along with other basis feature of sub-band signals. In the experiment, data set 1 of BCI competition IV are used and classification using SVM to prove strength of our new method.
Since epileptic seizure is unpredictable and paroxysmal, an automatic system for seizure detecting could be of great significance and assistance to patients and medical staff. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for multichannel patient-specific seizure detection applying the earth mover's distance (EMD) in scalp EEG. Firstly, the wavelet decomposition is executed to the original EEGs with five scales, the scale 3, 4 and 5 are selected and transformed into histograms and afterwards the distances between histograms in pairs are computed applying the earth mover's distance as effective features. Then, the EMD features are sent to the classifier based on the Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (BLDA) for classification, and an efficient postprocessing procedure is applied to improve the detection system precision, finally. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the CHB-MIT scalp EEG database with 958 h EEG recordings from 23 epileptic patients is used and a relatively satisfactory detection rate is achieved with the average sensitivity of 95.65% and false detection rate of 0.68/h. The good performance of this algorithm indicates the potential application for seizure monitoring in clinical practice.
