  • Electrical discharge machining is the method of using thermal energy by electrical discharge. Generally, if the material of workpiece has conductivity even though very hard materials and complicated shape which are difficult to cut such as quenching steel, cemented carbide, diamond and conductive ceramics, the EDM process is favorable one of possible machining processes. But, the process is necessarily required of finish cut and heat treatment because of slow cutting speed, no mirror surface, brittleness and crack due to the residual stress for manufactured goods. In this experimental thesis, the super EDM drilling was developed for high precision semiconductor die steel and for minimization of leadframe width. It was possible to development of EDM drilling machine for high precision semiconductor die with the electrode guide and its modelling and stress analysis. The development of electrode with the copper pipe type was conducted to drill the hole from the diameter of 0.1mm to 3.0mm with the error of from 0.02mm to 0.12mm. From the SEM and EDX analysis, the entrance of the EDM drill was found the resolidification of not only the component of tungsten but also the component of copper.

  • The fabrication of complex three-dimensional electrodes for micro electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM) is an important issue in the field of micromachining Localized electrochemical deposition (LECD) is a simple and inexpensive technique for fabricating micro-EDM electrodes. This study presents a new process for manufacturing electrodes with complex cross-sections using masks of different shapes, In this process, a non-conductive mask is placed between an anode and cathode that are immersed in a plating solution of acidified copper sulfate. The LECD is achieved by applying a pulsed voltage between the anode and cathode, which are separated by a small distance. In this setup, the cathode is placed above the anode and the mask, so that the deposited electrode can be used directly for EDM without changing the tool orientation. We found that the microstructure of the deposited electrode is influenced by the concentration of the plating solution and organic additives. Moreover, the values of the voltage, frequency, and duty cycle of the pulsed input have significant effects on the microstructure of the fabricated electrode. Finally, the optimum values of the voltage, frequency, and duty cycle were determined for the most effective fabrication of complex-shaped electrodes.

  • Micro electrical discharge machining (EDM) as a non-contact machining process is very effective for micromachining with a thin electrode because of its low machining reaction force. The micro-electrode machining device has the advantage of maintaining high precision through the whole processes and uses a feeding wire in the thin electrode tool manufacturing process. This study describes the design and evaluation of a micro-electrode machining device using optical photo-interrupter. The electrode was fabricated by reverse electrical discharge machining. The performance of designed system was evaluated to measure tension force according to feed speed of wire. This system for micro electrode fabrication proves the feasibility in the micro-EDM process of the micro holes and parts for industrial applications.

  • Micro drilling characteristics by EDM method was investigated. In detail, Micro tool electrode for EDM drilling was machined by use of WEDG method and micro hole was drilled using the machined tool electrode in SUS plate. The machining accuracy and time was compared in a different dielectric fluid. As a result, it was convinced that this method could be utilized as a fabrication technology of micro mold or micro 3 dimensional parts.

  • Electric discharge machining drill (EDM-drill) is an efficient process for the fabrication of micro-diameter deep metal hole. As there is non-physical contact between tool (electrode) and workpiece, EDM-drill is widely used to machine the hard machining materials such as high strength steel, cemented carbide, titanium alloys. The electro-thermal energy forces the electrode to wear out together with the workpiece to be machined. The electrode wear occurs inside of a machining hole. and It causes hard to monitor the machining state, which leads the productivity and the quality to decrease. Thus, this study presents a methodology to estimated the electrode wear amount while two coefficients (scale factor and shape factor) of the logarithmic regression model are evaluated from the experiment result. To increase the accuracy of estimation model, the linear transformation method is adopted using the differences of initial electrode wear differences. The estimation model is verified through experiment. The experimental result shows that within minute error, the estimation model is able to predict accurately.

  • The electrical discharge machining(EDM) with Si electrode instead of Gr or Cu electrode. made enormous effects on the surface. machining time, anti-caustic workpiece surface and so on In this paper. we experimented on the inter-role distance during discharge the electrical phenomenon of inter-pole, the distribution of discharge point. the distribution of off load time. etc., using Si electrode Cu electrode and Gr electrode under the same machining condition. As a result of a large quantity generated exclusive powders. the performance of the EDM using Si electrode. compared with EDM using others. is improved. We show that the quantities of those make far pole-gap discharge and discharge scatter under stable machining status possible.

  • With development of high advanced technologies and skills, micro machining techniques also are being more functional and smaller. Some of the recently developed micro machining technologies are micro drilling, micro EDM, WEDG, LBM, micro milling, micro UVM etc. In these micro machining techniques, Micro -EDM is generally used for machining micro holes, pockets, and micro structures in difficult-cut-materials. For machining micro structures, first of all, tool electrode should be fabricated by WEDG process. In micro-EDM, parameters such as peak current, pulse width, duration time are very important to fabricate the tool electrode and micro structures. Developed experimental equipments are composed of RLC circuit with PWM. In this paper, using developed micro EDM machine, the characteristics of micro electro discharge machining are investigated at micro holes, slot, and pocket machining etc. Also the trends of tool wear are investigated in case of hole and slot machining.

  • Micro-EDM is one of the recent fine-machining technologies. Micro-EDM is widely used in precision processes because products manufactured via EDM are free from workpiece hardness. However, the debris produced during the process cause many problems such as reduced precision of the process. The first solution of this problem involves using the milling hole process. Micro-EDM hole process involves an electrode moving rapidly in the vertical direction via a servo system to disperse debris. However, this process can cause reduced work efficiency owing to contact between the electrode and workpiece. In this study, ultrasonic vibration is added to micro-EDM channel machining. Ultrasonic vibration removes the debris during machining and enables precision machining. Consequently, a clean work environment for the subsequent processes is maintained.
