  • ECF and TCF bleaching methods are favored in bleaching plants over the world due to the increasing environment constraints. However, interaction of main stages(D and O stage) in ECF bleaching have not been understood completely yet. The degradation of holocellulose as a carbohydrate model compound was investigated by SEC(size exclusive chromatography) to estimate the change of its molecular weight distribution after O and D stage combination treatment. The molecular weight distribution of holocellulose was observed in two divisions(higher and lower molecular portions). It was also shown that DO sequence was more effective than OD, and DOD or ODO was more effective than DO. D stage had a little effect on the degradation of holocellulose, while the degradation of holocellulose increased as the time of the first O stage increased.

  • Increasing consumer demand for recycle of most paper products is challenging manufacturers to use lower value raw materials while maintaining high quality. This study was carried out to investigate the composition of old corrugated containers (OCC) and to manufacture printing and writing papers of over 85% (ISO) brightness by ECF and TCF bleaching from OCC. Fiber length of American old corrugated container (AOCC) was longer than that of Korean old corrugated container (KOCC) in fiber length. The former was composed of unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) of about 80 percentage, the latter about 20 percentage. OCC is feasible for manufacturing of pulps i.e., AOCC is for printing and writing papers and KOCC is for whiteboards, in the aspects of brightness and mechanical properties on the other hand, the cost of manufacturing upgraded papers by OCC is high because of bleaching chemicals. Neverthless, considering various aspects, especially environment, there are many advantages in recycling. In case of the treated AOCC pulp, over 85% (ISO) brightness can be achieved through TCF or ECF bleaching step, while the treated KOCC pulp did not allow high brightness through TCF bleaching. The tensile index of the bleached KOCC pulp was lower than that of the bleached AOCC pulp, but the burst and tear index of KOCC was higher than that of AOCC.

  • Nippon Paper Industries, Co., Ltd. declared conversion of all the bleaching process to ECF, and most of the production had converted by now. To reduce ECF bleaching cost, we found that depending on electricity supply condition of the mill, utilization of ozone bleaching could be very effective. In addition, hot acid treatment of unbleached pulp also seemed to be effective for hardwood. In this study, several conditions for each technology were examined with the pulps from our own mills to reduce bleaching cost and to keep fiber quality acceptable level. In hot acid treatment study, with mild conditions (temperature lower than $90^{\circ}C$), sufficient reduction in Kappa number and hexenuronic acids content of the pulp were observed, while pulp viscosity was maintained. Moreover, to maintain strength of bleached pulp that subjected both to ozone bleaching and hot acid treatment, recommended Kappa number after ozone bleaching was more than 3. Based on these findings, two of our mills had installed medium-consistency ozone bleaching facilities and three mills installed hot acid treatment. Especially in Yatsushiro mill, both were installed in one bleaching line (A-ZD-E/P-D sequence), and running successfully.

  • Soda-AQ pulp made from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) were bleached in element chlorine free (ECF) sequence. To reduce chlorine dioxide use, final peroxide bleaching was introduced. Prior to peroxide bleaching, different chelating chemicals were applied for comparative analysis in ISO brightness and viscosity. When using equal total chlorine dioxide usage (4.5%), bleached SCB pulp using chelate and hydrogen peroxide (DEDQP) was reached 86.8% (DTPA), 86.4% (EDTA) ISO brightness, whereas bleached pulp using only hydrogen peroxide (DEDP) reached at 81.2% ISO brightness. Viscosity of DEDQP bleached pulp was 25.6 cPs (DTPA), 25.2 cPs (EDTA), And DEDP bleached pulp was shown 18.0 cPs viscosity. Decreasing of transition metal by chelate process led to improvements in final brightness along with higher viscosity. Due to EDTA is 5-7 times cheaper than DTPA, EDTA is recommended as chelating chemical prior to peroxide bleaching.

  • Moso Bamboo was investigated as the a raw material for pulp and paper industry. Soda-Anthraquinone (Soda-AQ) pulping, elemental chlorine free bleaching was applied. Yield of soda or soda-AQ pulp was 29.3-31.7% with Kappa number 33.0-22.8 with different cooking time or anthraquinone addition at 20% active alkali. In soda or soda-AQ pulping, 81-86% of xylan was removed, which was the main reason for lower pulp yield than hardwood species. Average fiber length of Moso Bamboo soda-AQ pulp was 1.36 mm with $15.5{\mu}m$ fiber width. Soda-AQ pulp from Moso Bamboo (P-3, lowest Kappa pulp) was bleached with 5.5-6.5% of chlorine dioxide charge as D0ED1 bleaching sequence. In 3-stages ECF bleaching, final brightness of 85.3% ISO was achieved with total chlorine dioxide 6.5%.

  • Elementally Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching will be superior than Totally Chlorine free (TCF) bleaching, not only because they have no significant difference in effluent toxicity, but also those pulps bleached by ECF have higher brightness, strength, yield, etc., over those by TCF. With this belief, this paper focused on the chemistry of chlorine dioxide decomposition and ionization, both in water solution and in pulp slurry. Special attention was paid to chlorate ion because there have been controversies as how it is formed and what its behavior to the end pH of pulp bleaching is. As a result, during ionization of chlorine dioxide with water, both chlorate and chlorite were found to increase with increasing pH, but during ionization with pulp, chlorite was found to increase with end pH while chlorate decreased with increasing end pH. In the case of ionization with water, the disproportion equation $2CIO_2 + OH^{-} \lightarrow H_2O + CIO_3^{-} + CIO_2^{-}$ was thought to become the main reaction with the increasing pH, while in the case of ionization with pulp, the reaction $HCIO + CIO_2^{-}\lightarow H^{+} + Cl^{-} + CIO_3^{-}$ was the main reaction contributing to the formation of chlorate. Based on this above opinion, the contrary results of chlorine dioxide ionization from different researchers were discussed and explained.

  • Due to environmental proessures there is increasing use of hydrogen peroxide as a total or partial substitute for chlorine based bleaching agents within ECF or TCF sequences. However, to aceive satifactory brightness using peroxide alone, stages having a combination of high temperature, pressure, pH or residence time are required. It may also have negative impact on fiber quality . Therefore, it would be of advantage if vertain means could be found to make hydrogen peroxide more effective in bleacing , via shortening treaction time and allevaiating the need for such forcing reaction conditions. This can be achieve by converting the peroxide in-situ to stronger oxidant through the use of 손 bleach activator. In this study to investigate the influence of additives, such as tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) and Molybdate (MO) . addition on peroxide bleaching were carried out. Under alkaline conditions the bleching additives. TAED and Mo. can react H2O2 to form peracetic acid and peroxomolybdate respectively and these generated activators can improve deliginification,. The activators make it possible to bleach the pulp efficiently at low temperature in the range 50 to 7$0^{\circ}C$. Also, addition of TAED and Mo is an environmentally friendly way of enhancing the performance of peroxide bleaching can be incorporated into TCF and ECF sequences.

  • Newly bleaching sequence using oxygen, ozone and hydrogen peroxide has introduced to avoid pollution hazards from chlorinated organic compounds, because chlorine dioxide substitution bleaching was produced a little chlorinated organic substance. Oxygen-type chemicals replaced for chlorine has attracted much research attention. Bleachability of ozone was improved at low temperature and high pulp consistency. In third bleaching followed OZ bleaching, addition of O2 and NaBH4 in alkali extraction was effective than only alkali extraction. Bleachability of pulps in ozone bleaching(Z) was improved at higher consistency and lower temperature The addition O2 and NaBH4 in alkali extraction after OZ bleaching sequence improved brightness, when compared to those obtained by only alkaline extraction. Pulps bleached by ECF bleaching sequences such as OZEoD and OZEopD was obtained by 90% ISO brightness. The brightness of pulp bleached by TCF sequences with the ozone dosage of 1.6% was approached to target brightness (88~90%ISO). Pulps bleached Z stage combined bleaching sequence was reduced the viscosity to a little greater extent. However, physical properties of pulps was not great different compared to those bleached by conventional bleaching sequences. A pollution index of bleaching effluente by ozone combined bleaching sequences was lower than by conventional bleaching sequence, but somewhat higher than multistage bleaching sequences combined C/D stage.

  • Nowadays, the concern on the environmental load of bleaching process gave rise to the process of ECF(elemental chlorine free) and TCF(total clorine free). These sequences are based on oxygen-derived compounds such as oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide which is used as a typical eco-friendly bleaching agent. In this study, paper mulberry pulp was bleached with hydrogen peroxide and some bleaching process were accompanied with ultrasonication in order to increase the bleaching efficiency. The best bleaching efficiency of paper mulberry pulp was obtained in the condition of hydrogen peroxide and ultrasonication(20 kHz) bleaching system at $45^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The brightness and kappa number of paper mulberry pulp were gained to 5.09% and 3.52 respectively. and yield was slightly loosed to 2%. Therefore, the efficiency of hydrogen peroxide and ultrasonication bleaching system of paper mulberry pulp was superior to the conventional hydrogen peroxide bleaching system. Magnesium sulfate acted as a bleaching stabilizer for the increasement of yield. As a result, the yield and viscosity were increased to 2.2% and 12% respectively.
