By studying Korean companies' strategy and current situation in the Chinese retail market and analyzing Lotte Mart's strategy, this study was aimed at identifying comprehensive strategies for Korean companies striving to expand in China's retail market. Research design, data, and methodology - A case study approach is used, focusing on the three northeastern provinces in China, and examining global firms' entry into the Chinese market. The study employed a direct survey and a literature review. Results - Korean distribution firms' entry into the overseas market is in the inception stage and it should be developed, considering its effects on the national economy and other industries. Conclusion - The cases of E-mart and Lotte Mart, representing Korean distribution firms, showed that they should not rely on scale to succeed in China. Both preliminary analysis and careful strategies are required to ensure success. Considering the high growth potential of the Chinese market, a management strategy that takes account of Chinese people's emotions was needed.

  • Purpose: Our purpose in this study was to examine the strategies for the development of watermelon industry using unstructured big data analysis. That is, this study was to look the change of issues and consumer's perception about watermelon using big data and social network analysis and to investigate ways to strengthen the competitiveness of watermelon industry based on that. Methodology: For this purpose, the data was collected from Naver (blog, news) and Daum (blog, news) by TEXTOM 4.5 and the analysis period was set from 2015 to 2016 and from 2017-2018 and from 2019-2020 in order to understand change of issues and consumer's perception about watermelon or watermelon industry. For the data analysis, TEXTOM 4.5 was used to conduct key word frequency analysis, word cloud analysis and extraction of metrics data. UCINET 6.0 and NetDraw function of UCINET 6.0 were utilized to find the connection structure of words and to visualize the network relations, and to make a cluster of words. Results: The keywords related to the watermelon extracted such as 'the stalk end of a watermelon', 'E-mart', 'Haman', 'Gochang', and 'Lotte Mart' (news: 015-2016), 'apple watermelon', 'Haman', 'E-mart', 'Gochang', and' Mudeungsan watermelon' (news: 2017-2018), 'E-mart', 'apple watermelon', 'household', 'chobok', and 'donation' (news: 2019-2020), 'watermelon salad', 'taste', 'the heat', 'baby', and 'effect' (blog: 2015-2016), 'taste', 'watermelon juice', 'method', 'watermelon salad', and 'baby' (blog: 2017-2018), 'taste', 'effect', 'watermelon juice', 'method', and 'apple watermelon' (blog: 2019-2020) and the results from frequency and TF-IDF analysis presented. And in CONCOR analysis, appeared as four types, respectively. Conclusions: Based on the results, the authors discussed the strategies and policies for boosting the watermelon industry and limitations of this study and future research directions. The results of this study will help prioritize strategies and policies for boosting the consumption of the watermelon and contribute to improving the competitiveness of watermelon industry in Korea. Also, it is expected that this study will be used as a very important basis for agricultural big data studies to be conducted in the future and this study will offer watermelon producers and policy-makers practical points helpful in crafting tailor-made marketing strategies.

  • Purpose - The research aim is to shed empirical light on whether quality-focused retailer brands such as Premium brand of Tesco Korea, Prime of Lotte Mart, and Best of E-Mart in the grocery market, make a contribution to developing store loyalty in the Korean market particularly. Research design, data, methodology - After developing sixconstructs, such as higher quality, stock availability, price levels, national brands, retailer brand attitudes, and store loyalty, the authors adopted exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, chi-square test and structural equation modelling as a research technique. Results - It was found that higher quality strongly influences the retailer brand attitude formation, and that retailer brand customers were sensitive to price levels. Buyers are, nevertheless, relatively less aware of price levels, when purchasing quality-oriented retailer brand types. Conclusions - The research implied that quality-oriented retailer brand types make a significant contribution to retailer brands attitude formation, and further, building store loyalty.

Research design, data, methodology - This study analyzed negative information (news) on large retailers (Lotte Mart, E-Mart and Homeplus) based on the monthly data over the past five years from 2008 to 2012 and also analyzed the correlation between dependent variables that are likely to affect sales through large retailer economic index, Results - This study conducted a correlation analysis on the time lag of the factors that have an impact on the negative information and sales of large retailers in order to analyze how consumers respond to the choice of large retailers' store (store sales) when they perceived negative information about the un- ethical behaviors of large retailers. Conclusions - Unfair and negative information on large retailers appeared significant for the hypothesis that sales will be affected by the image of large retailers and change of consumer attitudes.

  • The entry of large discount stores such as E-mart, LG mart, Magnet etc. into small cities have had a profound impact on the business of small-sized retailers. Now, it becomes the matter of survival for small-sized retailers and it is almost impossible to reverse those trends. Without satisfying consumers' various needs and wants, retailers can not survive. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand retail competition from the perspective of consumers in order for retailers to survive in the turbulent environment. The previous research studies on retail competition have focused on the comparison among different types of retailers with respect to strategic retail mix variables. However, they do not consider the competitive aspects of consumers' sides. In addition, we do not fully understand the meaning of "shopping." Shopping means hedonic shopping as well as utilitarian shopping. Utilitarian aspects are important but consumers also prefer' hedonic aspects too. That is the reason that traditional retailers such as small-sized retailers can not compete with modem and large retailers. We use three different methods to identify the macro and competitive structure. of retailing with respect to shopping. Factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, and multiple correspondence analysis are used to produce perceptual mapping of retail competition. Department store and large discount store are identified as close competitors but both might have an indirect impact on small-sized retailers through demand shift toward high end retailers.

  • Excessive inventories result from poor scheduling, planning, and controls, and the converse is also same. With adequate inventories, supplies can transport products to customers in time without excessive delivering cost. So efficient inventory control is vital for successful logistics management operation. In terms of mass discount retailers such as Wal-Mart, Carrefour, E-Mart, and so on, they require the high-quality services such as a small-amount and a high-frequency delivery because of having small warehouse and wanting possess much more various goods. In the opposite, manufactures ask mass discount retailer to delivery more lots of goods because of reducing the number of deliveries. It goes without saying that both wish to prevent stockout(lack of inventories). Usually, mass discount retailers have the power more than manufactures. This paper proposed how to manage inventory and how many to order in view of the TPLC and supplier. We considered the economic order quantity models for multiple items so as to prevent urgent deliveries as possible as. And the tradeoff stockout costs and delivering costs.

  • Purpose - This study aims to develop and empirically test a multi-dimensional service convenience scale with the dimensions and measurement items of service convenience perceived by Korean consumers in retail contexts. Research design, data, and methodology - The study adopts the framework suggested by Berry et al. (2002) and conceptualizes service convenience as a second-order reflective construct comprising 31 items. Three department store chains (Hyundai, Lotte, and Shinsegae) and three discount store chains (E-mart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart) were involved 510 valid responses were used for the empirical testing. Results - The measurement model is acceptable for internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Further, the structural model results show that service convenience is positively related to satisfaction. Results of the rival model comparison indicate that the proposed second-order factor model provides a better fit to the data than both the five-factor and the one-factor model. Conclusions - The multi-dimensional, second-order conceptualization of service convenience is robustly supported. This study provides psychometrically valid scales to measure service convenience in retail contexts as conceptualized by Berry et al. (2002).
