  • The flow characteristics in a hot mill reheating furnace is numerically simulated in this study. Navier-Stokes equations for conservation of mass, momentum, energy are solved and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, mixture fraction/PDF model are used for the turbulent reacting flow in the furnace. Radiation heat transfer is incorporated by the P-1 method with the absorption coefficient evaluated using WSGGM. First, simulation results are obtained for the total furnace region with existing protective dam, and then the calculations are carried out only for the preheating zone in the furnace. In that zone, additional center darn is built in order to control the flow behavior of the inlet air and the combustion gas.

  • In this paper, we study the effect of various turbulence models by comparing the aerodynamic characteristics and the flow patterns computed for aircraft models. An in-house CFD solver, MSAPv, that solves the three dimensional RANS equations with the turbulence model equations is used. The turbulence models used in this study are the Spalart-Allmaras model, Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST model, Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model, and Huang and Coakley's $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. DLR-F6 WB and WBNP configurations are selected for the study. We concentrate on the separated flow pattern variations with the turbulence models at the wing-body junction and the wing-pylon junction as well as drag polar curves.

  • Finite element analysis(FEA) has been extensively applied in the analyses of biomechanical properties of stents. Geometrically, a closed-cell stent is an assembly of a number of repeated unit cells and exhibits periodicity in both longitudinal and circumferential directions. This study concentrates on various parameters of the FEA models for the analysis of drug-eluting biodegradable polymeric stents for application to the treatment of coronary artery disease. In order to determine the mechanical characteristics of biodegradable polymeric stents, FEA was used to model two different types of stents: tubular stents(TS) and helicoidal stents(HS). For this modeling, epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG)-eluting poly[(L-lactide-co-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone), PLCL] (E-PLCL) was chosen as drug-eluting stent materials. E-PLCL was prepared by blending PLCL with 5% EGCG as previously described. In addition, the effects of EGCG blending on the mechanical properties of PLCL were investigated for both types of stent models. EGCG did not affect tensile strength at break, but significantly increased elastic modulus of PLCL. It is suggested that FEA is a cost-effective method to improve the design of drug-eluting biodegradable polymeric stents.

  • In the mechanistic-empirical trackbed design of railways, the resilient modulus is the key input parameter. This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 0.6mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.

  • Mast cells play an important role in early and late phase allergic reactions through allergen and IgE-dependent release of histamine, proteases, prostaglandins, and several multifunctional cytokines. In this study, we investigated whether Cudrania tricuspidata extract (CTE) suppresses IgE-mediated allergic responses in mast cells, an allergic animal model, and its mechanism of action in mast cells. We found that CTE inhibited IgE-mediated degranulation and cytokine production in rat basophilic leukemia (RBL)-2H3 mast cells and bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC), as well as passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in mice. With regard to its mechanism of action, CTE suppressed the activating phosphorylation of spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), a key enzyme in mast cell signaling processes and that of LAT, a downstream adaptor molecule of Syk in $Fc{\varepsilon}RI$-mediated signal pathways. CTE also suppressed the activating phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases and Akt. The present results strongly suggest that the anti-allergic activity of CTE is mediated through inhibiting degranulation and allergic cytokine secretion by inhibition of Syk kinase in mast cells. Therefore, CTE may be useful for the treatment of allergic diseases.

  • LNG Carriers are currently known as sole commercial means of shipping natural gas on the sea. They are designed to proven dangerous explosion for shipping a lot of gas over long distance. In this study. In this study, a scaled model chamber was made to investigate ventilation characteristics of the hood room in LNG carrier. Experimental study was performed in model using visualization equipments with laser apparatus and image intensifier CCD camera gated by an AOM controller Twelve different kinds of measuring area were selected as experimental condition. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by using 2-D PIV system which software adopts two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. To look into stagnation area of hood room for LNG carrier, a three-dimensional numerical simulation with standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was carried out by using PHOENICS for three kinds of Reynolds number, $6.5{\times}10^3$, $9.7{\times}10^3\;and\;1.29{\times}10^4$, based on the cavity inlet velocity and cavity height. The flow pattern showed the large scale counter-clockwise forced-vortex rotated at center area, small eddies at each corner and stagnation area located at left-back upper side of model.

  • In thIns paper, a numerical simulation of steady laminar and turbulent flow in a two dimensional model for the total artificial heart is'presented. A trlleaflet polyurethane valve was simulated at the outflow orifice while the Inflow orifice had a trileaflet or a flap valve. The finite analytic numerical method was employed to obtain solutions to the governing equations in the Cartesian coordinates. The closure for turbulence model was achieved by employing the k-$\varepsilon$-E model. The SIMPLER algo rithm was used to solve the problem in primitive variables. The numerical solutions of the slulated model show that regions of relative stasis and trapped vortices were smaller within the ventricular chamber with the flap valve at the Inflow orifice than that with the trileaflet valve. The predicted Reynolds stresses distal to the inflow valve within the ventricular chamber were also found to be smaller wlth the flap valve than with the trlleaflet valve. These resu1ts also suggest a correlation be- tween high turbulent stresses and the presence of thrombus In the vicinity of the valves in the total artificial hearts. The computed velocity vectors and trubulent stresses were comparable with previ ously reported in vitro measurements in artificial heart chambers. Analysis of the numerical solo talons suggests that geometries similar to the flap valve(or a tilting disc valve) results in a better flow dynamics within the total artificial heart chamber compared to a trileaflet valve.

  • A strong antiferromagnetic coupling in Fe/Si multilayered films (MLF) had been recently discovered and much consideration has been given to whether the coupling in the Fe/Si MLF system has the same origin as the metal/metal MLF. Nevertheless, the nature of the interfacial ron silicide is still controversial. On one hand, a metal/ semiconductor structure was suggested with a narrow band-gap semiconducting $\varepsilon$-FeSi spacer that mediates the coupling. However, some features show that the nature of coupling can be well understood in terms of the conventional metal/metal multilayered system. It is well known that both magneto-optical (MO) and optical properties of a metal depend strongly on their electronic structure that is also correlated with the atomic and chemical ordering. In this study, the nature of the interfacial regions is the Fe/Si multilayers has been investigated by the experimental and computer-simulated MO and optical spectroscopies. The Fe/Si MLF were prepared by rf-sputtering onto glass substrates at room temperature with the number of repetition N=50. The thickness of Fe sublayer was fixed at 3.0nm while the Si sublayer thickness was varied from 1.0 to 2.0 nm. The topmost layer of all the Fe/Si MLF is Fe. In order to carry out the computer simulations, the information on the MO and optical parameters of the materials that may constitute a real multilayered structure should be known in advance. For this purpose, we also prepared Fe, Si, FeSi2 and FeSi samples. The structural characterization of Fe/Si MLF was performed by low- and high -angle x-ray diffraction with a Cu-K$\alpha$ radiation and by transmission electron microscopy. A bulk $\varepsilon$-FeSi was also investigated. The MO and optical properties were measured at room temperature in the 1.0-4.7 eV energy range. The theoretical simulations of MO and optical properties for the Fe/Si MLF were performed by solving exactly a multireflection problem using the scattering matrix approach assuming various stoichiometries of a nonmagnetic spacer separating the antiferromagnetically coupled Fe layers. The simulated spectra of a model structure of FeSi2 or $\varepsilon$-FeSi as the spacer turned out to fail in explaining the experimental spectra of the Fe/Si MLF in both intensity and shape. Thus, the decisive disagreement between experimental and simulated MO and optical properties ruled out the hypothesis of FeSi2 and $\varepsilon$-FeSi as the nonmagnetic spacer. By supposing the spontaneous formation of a metallic ζ-FeSi, a reasonable agreement between experimental and simulated MO and optical spectra was obtained.

  • A numerical study has been carried out to investigate the flow and heat transfer from an aluminum foam heat sink in a confined channel. A uniform heat flux is given at the bottom of the aluminum foam heat sink, which is horizontally placed on the heated surface. The channel walls are assumed to be adiabatic. Cold air is supplied from the top opening of the channel and exhausted to the channel outlet. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the governing Wavier-Stokes and energy equations, using the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model and the local thermal non-equilibrium model f3r the region of porous media. Details of flow and thermal fields are examined over wide ranges of the principal parameters; i.e., the Reynolds number Re, the height of heat sink h/H, porosity $\varepsilon$and pore diameter ratio $R_{H}$.
