This paper investigates the dynamics of a HDD spindle system due to the change of FDBs. Flying height of the HDD spindle system is determined through the static analysis of the FDBs, and the stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated through the dynamic analysis of the FDBs. Free vibration characteristics and shock response of the HDD spindle system are analyzed by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. Experimental modal test is also performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. This research shows that the stiffness coefficients of journal heating mostly affect the rocking frequencies because their magnitude are within the range of the stiffness of supporting structure. It also shows that the damping coefficients of thrust bearing mostly affect the axial frequency because the stiffness of thrust bearing is much smaller that that of supporting structure.
This paper proposes an analytical solution method for free vibration of curved functionally graded (FG) nonlocal beam supposed to different thermal loadings, by considering porosity distribution via nonlocal elasticity theory for the first time. Material properties of curved FG beam are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Thermo-mechanical properties of porous FG curved beam are supposed to vary through the thickness direction of beam and are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Since variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties, porosity play a key role in the mechanical response of curved FG structures. The rule of power-law is modified to consider influence of porosity according to even distribution. The governing equations of curved FG porous nanobeam under temperature field are derived via the energy method based on Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical Navier solution procedure is used to achieve the natural frequencies of porous FG curved nanobeam supposed to thermal loadings with simply supported boundary condition. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, porosity volume fractions, type of temperature rising, gradient index, opening angle and aspect ratio of curved FG porous nanobeam on the natural frequency are successfully discussed. It is concluded that these parameters play key roles on the dynamic behavior of porous FG curved nanobeam. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of curve FG nanobeam with porosity phases.

The purpose of this paper is the assessment of the capacity of the reinforced concrete (RC) elements of an arch bridge when they are subjected to contact and near-contact explosive charges of various amounts, and the estimation of the critical charges for these components. The bridge considered is the Tenza Viaduct, a decommissioned structure south of Naples, Italy. Its primary elements, deck, piers and arches were analyzed. The evaluation was accomplished via numerical analyses that made possible to obtain the elements dynamic response when they are exposed to blast loading conditions. To evaluate the member's capacities, failure criteria for deck, piers and arches were proposed based on concrete damage parameters. Additionally, curves relating the explosive charge to the residual capacity and to damage level of the elements were also developed. The results of this work were taken into account to investigate the progressive collapse of the global structure.
This paper presents a series of experimental and numerical investigations on a vertical isolation system with quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) property. The isolation system comprises a linear helical spring and disk spring. The disk spring is designed to provide variable stiffness to the system. Orthogonal static tests with different design parameters are conducted to verify the mathematical and mechanical models of the isolation system. The deviations between theoretical and test results influenced by the design parameters are summarized. Then, the dynamic tests for the systems with different under-load degrees are performed, including the fast sweeping tests, harmonic excitation tests, and half-sine impact tests. The displacement transmissibility, vibration reduction rate, and free vibration response are calculated. Based on the test results, the variation of the transmission rule is evaluated and the damping magnitudes and types are identified. In addition, the relevant numerical time history responses are calculated considering the nonlinear behavior of the system. The results indicate that the QZS isolation system has a satisfactory isolation effect, while a higher damping level can potentially promote the isolation performance in the low-frequency range. It is also proved that the numerical calculation method accurately predicts the transmission character of the isolation system.
A fully coupled non-linear effective stress response finite difference (FD) model is built to survey the counter-intuitive recent findings on the reliance of pore water pressure ratio on foundation contact pressure. Two alternative design scenarios for a benchmark problem are explored and contrasted in the light of construction emission rates using the EFFC-DFI methodology. A strain-hardening effective stress plasticity model is adopted to simulate the dynamic loading. A combination of input motions, contact pressure, initial vertical total pressure and distance to foundation centreline are employed, as model variables, to further investigate the control of permanent and variable actions on the residual pore pressure ratio. The model is verified against the Ghosh and Madabhushi high acceleration field test database. The outputs of this work are aimed to improve the current computer-aided seismic foundation design that relies on ground's packing state and consistency. The results confirm that on seismic excitation of shallow foundations, the likelihood of effective stress loss is greater in deeper depths and across free field. For the benchmark problem, adopting a shallow foundation system instead of piled foundation benefitted in a 75% less emission rate, a marked proportion of which is owed to reduced materials and haulage carbon cost.
In many of microdevices a part of a microbeam is covered by a piezoelectric layer. Depend on the application a DC or AC voltage is applied between upper and lower side of the piezoelectric layer. A common method in many of previous works for evaluating the response of these structures is discretizing by Galerkin method. In these works often single mode shape of a uniform microbeam i.e. the microbeam without piezoelectric layer has been used as comparison function, and so the convergence of the solution has not been verified. In this paper the Galerkin method is used for discretization, and a comprehensive analysis on the convergence of solution of equation that is discretized using this comparison function is studied for both clamped-clamped and clamped-free microbeams. The static and dynamic solution resulted from Galerkin method is compared to the modal expansion solution. In addition the static solution is compared to an exact solution. It is denoted that the required numbers of uniform microbeam mode shapes for convergence of static solution due to DC voltage depends on the position and thickness of deposited piezoelectric layer. It is shown that when the clamped-clamped microbeam is coated symmetrically by piezoelectric layer, then the convergence for static solution may be obtained using only first mode. This result is valid for clamped-free case when it is covered by piezoelectric layer from left clamped side to the right. It is shown that when voltage is AC then the number of required uniform microbeam shape mode for convergence is much more than the number of required mode in modal expansion due to the dynamic effect of piezoelectric layer. This difference increases by increasing the piezoelectric thickness, the closeness of the excitation frequency to natural frequency and decreasing the damping coefficient. This condition is often indefeasible in microresonator system. It is concluded that discreitizing the equation of motion using one mode shape of uniform microbeam as comparison function in many of previous works causes considerable errors.

This paper discusses the test procedure, instrumentation, verification methodology and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) performed on the KF-16D aircraft to estimate experimentally dynamic characteristics of the aircraft. The modal tests for 7 external store configurations were conducted to estimate effects of external stores on the aircraft vibration modes. To emulate free-free boundary conditions the test aircraft was mounted on its landing gear structure with deflated tires during the GVT. The airframe modal tests were done by burst random excitations with 6 to 8 shakers and about 200 accelerometers. Frequency response functions(FRFs) were measured for each test, and the FRFs were reduced and analyzed to identify the dynamic parameters interested. The analyses were carried out in two steps. To extract modal parameters such as, frequencies and damping ratios, the poly-reference least square complex exponential method was used in the time domain. The mode shape coefficients were estimated with the least squares frequency domain method to identify the vibration modes.
Nonlinear time-domain system identification (SI) algorithm is proposed to assess damage in a shear building by synchronously estimating time-varying stiffness and damping parameters using measured acceleration data. Mass properties have been assumed as the a priori known information. Viscous damping was utilized for the current research. To chase possible nonlinear dynamic behavior under severe vibration, an incremental governing equation of vibrational motion has been utilized. Stiffness and damping parameters are estimated at each time step by minimizing the response error between measured and computed acceleration increments at the measured degrees-of-freedom. To solve a nonlinear constrained optimization problem for optimal structural parameters, sensitivities of acceleration increment were formulated with respect to stiffness and damping parameters, respectively. Incremental state vectors of vibrational motion were computed numerically by Newmark-${\beta}$ method. No model is pre-defined in the proposed algorithm for recovering the nonlinear response. A time-window scheme together with Monte Carlo iterations was utilized to estimate parameters with noise polluted sparse measured acceleration. A moving average scheme was applied to estimate the time-varying trend of structural parameters in all the examples. To examine the proposed SI algorithm, simulation studies were carried out intensively with sample shear buildings under earthquake excitations. In addition, the algorithm was applied to assess damage with laboratory test data obtained from free vibration on a three-story shear building model.
Seismic fragility curves for an offshore wind-turbine structure were obtained. The dynamic response of an offshore wind turbine was analyzed by considering the nonlinear behavior of layered soil and the added mass effect due to seawater. A pile-soil interaction effect was considered by using nonlinear p-y, t-z curves. In the analysis, the amplification effect of ground acceleration through layered soil was considered by applying ground motion to each of the soil layers. The vertical variation in ground motion was found by one-dimensional free-field analysis of ground soils. Fragility curves were determined by damage levels in terms of tower stress and nacelle displacements that were found from static pushover analysis of the wind-turbine structure.
The dynamic performance of the wave energy converter (WEC) rotor with different geometric parameters such as depth of submergence and beak angle has been assessed by considering the linear potential flow theory using WAMIT solver and along with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The effect of viscous damping is incorporated by conducting numerical free decay test using CFD. The hydrodynamic coefficients obtained from the WAMIT, viscous damping from the CFD and estimated PTO damping are used to solve the equation of motion to obtain the final pitch response, mean optimal power and capture width. The viscous damping is almost 0.9 to 4.6 times when compared to the actual damping. It is observed that by neglecting the viscous damping the pitch response and power are overestimated when compared to the without viscous damping. The performance of the pitch WEC rotor in the Jeju western coast at the Chagwido is analyzed using Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) spectrum and square-root of average extracted power is obtained. The performance of WEC rotor with depth of submergence 2.8 m and beak angle $60^{\circ}$ found to be good compared to the other rotors.
