${\alpha}$-titanium alloy has a relatively low heat treatment characteristic and it is mainly subjected to heat treatment for residual stress, recovery or dynamic recrystallization. In this study, commercially pure titanium hollow castings was fabricated by gravity casting. Heat treatments were carried out at $750^{\circ}C$, $850^{\circ}C$ and $950^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effect of post-heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties. Beta-transus temperature ($T_{\beta}$) was about $913^{\circ}C$, and equiaxed microstructure was shown at temperature below $T_{\beta}$ and lath-type microstructure at temperature above $T_{\beta}$. Microstructure and mechanical properties did not show any significant difference in the direction of solidification for titanium hollow billet, so it can be seen that it was a well-made material for extrusion process. The optimum heat treatment condition of hollow billet castings for the seamless tube production was $850^{\circ}C$, 4 hr, FC, indicating a combination of equiaxed microstructure and appropriate mechanical properties.
Friction stir welding is one of the interesting welding methods for titanium and its alloy which proceeds with plastic flow due to thermo-mechanical stirring and friction heat. Solid-state welding can solve severe problems such as high-temperature oxidation, interstitial oxygen diffusion and grain coarsening by liquid-state welding. Dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement can vary significantly with the plunging load and rotational speed of tool during friction stir welding, and suitable process conditions must be optimized to obtain microstructure and better mechanical characteristics. Suitable FSW conditions were 1000 kg of plunging load and 200 rpm of rotational speed and it showed YS 270 MPa, UTS 332.1 MPa, and El 17.3%, which were very similar to those of wrought titanium sheet.
This study has been investigated the deformation behavior of a hot-extruded Mg-Zn-RE (RE: rare earth elements) alloy containing $Mg_{12}$(RE) particles at the elevated temperatures. The particles are intrinsically produced by breaking the eutectic structure of the alloy during the hot-extrusion process. The grain size of the extruded Mg-Zn-RE alloy developed via dynamic recrystallization is around $10{\mu}m$. Under the heat treatment at 200o C up to 48 hr, no change has been observed on the microstructure and mechanical properties due to the pinning effect of the thermally stable particles. Under the tensile test condition in the initial strain-rate range of $1\times10^{-3}s^{-1}$ and the temperature range up to $200^{\circ}C$, the alloy shows yield strength of 270 MPa and elongation to failure around 9% at room temperature and yield strength of 135 MPa at $200^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, although the alloy contains large amount of the second phase particles around 15%, it shows excellent hot-workability possibly due to the presence of the thermally stable interface between the particles and the matrix.
In this study, we investigated the dominant processing variables that would influence the microstructural development of AA6061 deformed by differential speed rolling (DSR) at ambient temperature. For this purpose, we carried out a series of DSR on the samples to investigate the effects of roll speed ratio, sample rotation, and number of operation under specific rotation. Among these, the condition with a height reduction of 75% at a speed ratio of 1:4 through rotation along rolling direction (RR) displayed the pronounced results of more homogenous matrix-structure and superior mechanical properties than the others tested in this study. This was mainly due to the cross shearing of macro-shear pattern in segment where dynamic recrystallization took place with ease throughout the sample. Thus, an average microhardness value of 101 Hv was obtained in the present sample deformed by 4-pass DSR with RR where macro cross-shearing was effectively applied.
In this study, a developed Mg-5Bi-2Al-0.4Mn (BAM520, wt%) alloy was successfully extruded at an extremely high speed of 70 m/min. Microstructural evolution during extrusion and the microstructural characteristics and tensile properties of the very-high-speed extruded BAM520 alloy were then investigated. The homogenized BAM520 billet contained only thermally stable Mg3Bi2 phase particles without any Mg17Al12 phase with a low melting temperature. Therefore, the BAM520 alloy exhibited excellent extrudability. The very-high-speed extruded BAM520 alloy had a completely recrystallized grain structure and a typical basal fiber texture. Despite the extremely high extrusion speed of 70 m/min, the extruded BAM520 alloy had a high ultimate tensile strength of 280 MPa due to combined strengthening effects of a small grain size, numerous fine Mg3Bi2 particles, and strong basal texture.
This research investigated the effect of Si addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, electric and thermal conductivity of as-extruded Al 6013 alloys. As the content of Si increased, the area fraction of the second phase increased. As the Si content increased, the average grain size decreased remarkably, from 182 (no Si addition) to 142 (1.5Si), 78 (3.0Si) and 77 ㎛ (4.5Si) due to dynamic recrystallization by the dispersed second particles in the aluminum matrix during the hot extrusion. As the Si content increased, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increased. The maximum values of yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were 224 MPa and 103 MPa for the 6013-4.5Si alloy. As the amount of Si added increased, the electrical and thermal conductivity decreased. The electrical and thermal conductivity of the Al6013-4.5Si alloy were 44.0 % IACS and 165.0 W/mK, respectively. The addition of Si to Al 6013 alloy had a significant effect on its thermal conductivity and mechanical properties.
As global warming accelerates, the transportation industry is increasing the use of lightweight materials with the goal of reducing carbon emissions. Magnesium is a suitable material, but its poor formability limits its use, so research is needed to improve it. Rare-earth elements are known to effectively control texture development, but their high cost limits commercial. In this study, changes in microstructure and texture were investigated by adding Pb, which is expected to have a similar effect as rare-earth elements. The material used is Mg-15wt%Pb alloy. Initial specimens were obtained by rolling at 773 K to a rolling reduction of 25% and heat treatment. Afterwards, plane strain compression was performed at 723 K with a strain rate of 5×10-2s-1 and a strain of -0.4 to -1.0. As a result, recrystallized grains were formed within the microstructure, and the main component of the texture changed from (0,0) to (30,26). The maximum axial density was initially 10.01, but decreased to 4.23 after compression.
Hot workability of the AA5083 alloy ws investigated by torsion test at temperature ranges of $350{\sim}520^{\circ}C$ and strain rates of 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0/sec. The flow stress and hot ductility of the AA5083 alloy as a function of deformation variables such as temperature and train rate were studied. The microstructural evolution of the AA5083 alloy was studied in relation to Zener-Hollomon parameter (Z=exp( /RT) Also the hot restoration mechanism of the AA5083 alloy was small when Z val-ues were higher than $1.73{\times}1016/sec(370^{\circ}C,\;0.5/sec)$ In addition the difference microstructures during hot deformation. It was found that the increase of flow curves and deformed microstructures during hot deformation. It was found that the increase of flow stress of the AA5083 alloy was small when Z val-ues were higher than $1.73{\times}1016/sec(370^{\circ}C.\;0.5/sec)$. However under the low Z values less than $1.73{\times}1016/sec(370^{\circ}C,\;0.5/sec)$ the flow stress increase with increasing the Z values. The large dispersoid particles in the matrix grain decreased the flow strain of the AA5083 alloy because it caused the stress concentration during hot deformation.

This study investigated the effects of the processing number of multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) on the microstructural changes of OFC fabricated by MADF processes. The as-extruded OFC was cut to $25mm^3$ cube for the MADF processes. The MADF process consists of plane forging with a thickness reduction of 30% and diagonal forging with a diagonal forging angle of $135^{\circ}$. In order to analyze the microstructural evolutions according to the number of repetitions, 1, 2, 3 and 4 cycles of the MADF process were performed. OFC specimens were successfully deformed without surface cracking for up to 4 cycles of MADF. The grain size, average misorientation and average grain orientation spread (GOS) of MADF processed materials were analyzed using EBSD technique and their Vicker's hardness were also measured. The results showed that MADF process effectively refined the microstructure of OFC with initial average grain size of $84.2{\mu}m$. The average grain sizes of specimens MADF processed for 1, 2, 3, 4 cycles were refined to be $8.5{\mu}m$, $2.2{\mu}m$, $1.5{\mu}m$, $1.1{\mu}m$, respectively. The grain refinement seemed to be saturated when OFC was MADF processed over 2 cycles. In the case of specimens subjected to two or more cycles of MADF, the degree of decrease in average grain size was drastically reduced as the number of cycles increased due to softening phenomena such as dynamic recovery or dynamic recrystallization during processing. The degree of increase in average Vicker's hardness was also dramatically reduced as the number of cycles increased due to the same reason.
This study investigates the effects of multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) processing number on the microstructures of AA1100 fabricated using MADF processes. The cast AA1100 was annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs in $N_2$ atmosphere and cut into $25mm^3$ cubes for the MADF processes. The MADF process consist of plane forging with a thickness reduction of 30% and a diagonal forging with a diagonal forging angle of 135 degrees. In order to analyze the microstructural variations based on the number of repetitions, 1, 2, 3 and 4 cycles of the MADF process were performed. AA1100 specimens were successfully deformed without cracking of the surface for up to 4 cycles of MADF. The grain size, average misorientation and average grain orientation spread (GOS) of MADF processed materials were analyzed using EBSD technique. The results showed that MADF process effectively refined the microstructure of AA1100 with an initial average grain size of $337.4{\mu}m$. The average grain sizes of specimens which were MADF processed for 2, 3, 4 cycles were refined to be $1.9{\mu}m$, $1.6{\mu}m$, $1.4{\mu}m$, respectively. The grain refinement appeared saturated when AA1100 got MADF processed over 2 cycles. When the specimen was subjected to two or more cycles of MADF, the degree of decrease in the average grain size drastically decreased with an increase in the number of cycle due to the softening phenomena such as dynamic recovery or dynamic recrystallization during processing.
