In this study, we introduce a canonical correlation analysis method to accurately assess the tunnel damage potential of ground motion. The proposed method can retain information relating to the initial variables. A total of 100 ground motion records are used as seismic inputs to analyze the dynamic response of three different profiles of tunnels under deep and shallow burial conditions. Nine commonly used ground motion parameters were selected to form the canonical variables of ground motion parameters (GMPCCA). Five structural dynamic response parameters were selected to form canonical variables of structural dynamic response parameters (DRPCCA). Canonical correlation analysis is used to maximize the correlation coefficients between GMPCCA and DRPCCA to obtain multivariate ground motion parameters that can be used to comprehensively assess the tunnel damage potential. The results indicate that the multivariate ground motion parameters used in this study exhibit good stability, making them suitable for evaluating the tunnel damage potential induced by ground motion. Among the nine selected ground motion parameters, peck ground acceleration (PGA), peck ground velocity (PGV), root-mean-square acceleration (RMSA), and spectral acceleration (Sa) have the highest contribution rates to GMPCCA and DRPCCA and the highest importance in assessing the tunnel damage potential. In contrast to univariate ground motion parameters, multivariate ground motion parameters exhibit a higher correlation with tunnel dynamic response parameters and enable accurate assessment of tunnel damage potential.
In this study, solution models are proposed to obtain code-compatible ground motion record sets which can be used for both uni-directional and bi-directional dynamic analyses. Besides scaled, unscaled ground motion record sets are obtained to show the utility and efficiency of the solution models. For scaled ground motion sets the proposed model is based on hybrid HS-Solver which integrates heuristic harmony search (HS) algorithm with the spreadsheet Solver add-in. For unscaled ground motion sets HS based solution model is proposed. Design spectra defined in Eurocode-8 for different soil types are selected as target spectra. The European Strong Motion Database is used to get ground motion record sets. Also, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the effect of different HS solution parameters on the solution accuracy. Results show that the proposed solution models can be regarded as efficient ways to develop scaled and unscaled ground motion sets compatible with code-based design spectra.

The reliable seismic stability evaluation of the natural slopes and geotechnical structures has become a critical factor of the design. Pseudo-static or permanent displacement methods are typically employed to evaluate the seismic slope performance. In both methods, the effect of input ground motion on the sliding surface is ignored, and failure surface from the limit equilibrium method is used. For the assessment of the seismic sensitivity of failure surface, two-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses are performed. The performance of the finite element model was validated against centrifuge measurements. A parametric study with a range of input ground motion was performed, and numerical results were used to assess the influence of ground motion characteristics on the sliding surface. Based on the results, it is demonstrated that the characteristics of input ground motion have a significant influence on the location of the seismically induce failure surface. In addition to dynamic analysis, pseudo-static analyses were performed to evaluate the discrepancy. It is observed that sliding surfaces developed from pseudo-static and dynamic analyses are different. The location of the failure surface change with the amplitude and Tm of motion. Therefore, it is recommended to determine failure surfaces from dynamic analysis
Quantitative estimation of seismic response of various structural systems at the collapse limit state is one of the most significant objectives in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE). Assessing the effects of uncertainties, due to variability in ground motion characteristics and random nature of earthquakes, on nonlinear structural response is a pivotal issue regarding collapse safety prediction. Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) and fragility curves are utilized to estimate demand parameters and seismic performance levels of structures. Since producing these curves based on a large number of nonlinear dynamic analyses would be time-consuming, selection of appropriate earthquake ground motion records resulting in reliable responses with sufficient accuracy seems to be quite essential. The aim of this research study is to propose a methodology to assess the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frames at collapse limit state via accurate estimation of seismic fragility curves for different Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) by using a limited number of ground motion records. Research results demonstrate that accurate estimating of structural collapse capacity is feasible through applying the proposed method offering an appropriate suite of limited ground motion records.

The evaluation of the seismic hazard for a given site is to estimate the seismic ground motion at the surface. This is the result of the combination of the action of the seismic source, which generates seismic waves, the propagation of these waves between the source and the site, and site local conditions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the sensitivity of dynamic response of extended structures to spatial variable ground motions (SVGM). All factors of spatial variability of ground motion are considered, especially local site effect. In this paper, a method is presented to simulate spatially varying earthquake ground motions. The scheme for generating spatially varying ground motions is established for spatial locations on the ground surface with varying site conditions. In this proposed method, two steps are necessary. Firstly, the base rock motions are assumed to have the same intensity and are modelled with a filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function. An empirical coherency loss model is used to define spatial variable seismic ground motions at the base rock. In the second step, power spectral density function of ground motion on surface is derived by considering site amplification effect based on the one dimensional seismic wave propagation theory. Several dynamics analysis of a curved viaduct to various cases of spatially varying seismic ground motions are performed. For comparison, responses to uniform ground motion, to spatial ground motions without considering local site effect, to spatial ground motions with considering coherency loss, phase delay and local site effects are also calculated. The results showed that the generated seismic signals are strongly conditioned by the local site effect. In the same sense, the dynamic response of the viaduct is very sensitive of the variation of local geological conditions of the site. The effect of neglecting local site effect in dynamic analysis gives rise to a significant underestimation of the seismic demand of the structure.

Developed in these two series of paper is a complex dynamic model representing the motion of aircraft on the ground and a computer program for numerical simulation. The first part of paper presents the theoretical derivation of equations of motion of the landing gear system based on the physical principle. Developed model is 'structured' in the sense that the undercarriage system is regarded as an assembly of strut, tire, and wheel, where each component is modeled by a separate module. These modules are linked with two external modules-the aircraft and the runway characteristics-to carry out dynamic analysis and numerical simulation of the aircraft motion on the ground. Three sets of coordinate system associated with strut, wheel/tire and runway are defined, and external loads to each component and response characteristics are examined. Lagrangian formulation is used to derive the undercarriage equations of motion relative to the moving aircraft, and the resultant forces and moments from the undercarriage are transformed to aircraft body axes.
Dynamic analysis method is Presented for analyzing rectangular liquid storage structures excited by horizontal and vertical ground motions. The irrotational motion of invicid and incompressible ideal fluid in rigid rectangular liquid storage structures subjected to horizontal and vertical ground motions and the motion of fluid induced by structural deformation are expressed by analytic solutions. Analysis methods are obtained by applying analytic solutions of the fluid motion to finite element equation of the structural motion. The fluid-structure interaction effect is reflected into the coupled equation as added fluid mass matrix. The free surface sloshing motion, hydrodynamic pressure acting on the wall and structural behavior due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are obtained by the presented method.
In this paper, a comparison of various random vibration and deterministic dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges subjected to asynchronous ground motion is presented. Different random vibration methods are included to determine the dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge for various ground motion wave velocities. As a numerical example the Jindo Bridge located in South Korea is chosen and a 413 DOF mathematical model is employed for this bridge. The results obtained from a spectral analysis approach are compared with those of two random vibration based response spectrum methods and a deterministic method. The analyses suggest that the structural responses usually show important amplifications depending on the decreasing ground motion wave velocities.
Two types of numerical modeling techniques were considered for the dynamic response of a structure subjected to a ground acceleration. One technique is based on the equation of motion relative to ground motion, and the other is based on the equation of absolute motion of the structure and the ground. The analytic background of the former is well established while the latter has not yet been extensively verified. The latter is called a large mass method, which allocates an appropriate large mass to the ground so that it causes the ground to move according to a given acceleration time history. In this paper, through the use of a single degree-of-freedom spring-mass system, the equations of motion of the two techniques were analyzed and useful theorems are provided on the large mass method. Using simple examples, the numerical results of the two modeling techniques were compared with analytic solutions. It is shown that the theorems provide a clear insight on the large mass method.
This paper studies the effects of spatially varying ground motions on the responses of a bridge frame located on a canyon site. Compared to the spatial ground motions on a uniform flat site, which is the usual assumptions in the analysis of spatial ground motion variation effects on structures, the spatial ground motions at different locations on surface of a canyon site have different intensities owing to local site amplifications, besides the loss of coherency and phase difference. In the proposed approach, the spatial ground motions are modelled in two steps. Firstly, the base rock motions are assumed to have the same intensity and are modelled with a filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function and an empirical spatial ground motion coherency loss function. Then, power spectral density function of ground motion on surface of the canyon site is derived by considering the site amplification effect based on the one dimensional seismic wave propagation theory. Dynamic, quasi-static and total responses of the model structure to various cases of spatially varying ground motions are estimated. For comparison, responses to uniform ground motion, to spatial ground motions without considering local site effects, to spatial ground motions without considering coherency loss or phase shift are also calculated. Discussions on the ground motion spatial variation and local soil site amplification effects on structural responses are made. In particular, the effects of neglecting the site amplifications in the analysis as adopted in most studies of spatial ground motion effect on structural responses are highlighted.
