Measuring the Impact of Competition on Pricing Behaviors in a Two-Sided Market

  • The impact of competition on pricing has been studied in the context of counterfactual merger analyses where expected optimal prices in a hypothetical monopoly are compared with observed prices in an oligopolistic market. Such analyses would typically assume static decision making by consumers and firms and thus have been applied mostly to data obtained from consumer packed goods such as cereal and soft drinks. However such static modeling approach is not suitable when decision makers are forward looking. When it comes to the markets for durable products with indirect network effects, consumer purchase decisions and firm pricing decisions are inherently dynamic as they take into account future states when making purchase and pricing decisions. Researchers need to take into account the dynamic aspects of decision making both in the consumer side and in the supplier side for such markets. Firms in a two-sided market typically subsidize one side of the market to exploit the indirect network effect. Such pricing behaviors would be more prevalent in competitive markets where firms would try to win over the battle for standard. While such qualitative expectation on the relationship between pricing behaviors and competitive structures could be easily formed, little empirical studies have measured the extent to which the distinct pricing structure in two-sided markets depends on the competitive structure of the market. This paper develops an empirical model to measure the impact of competition on optimal pricing of durable products under indirect network effects. In order to measure the impact of exogenously determined competition among firms on pricing, we compare the equilibrium prices in the observed oligopoly market to those in a hypothetical monopoly market. In computing the equilibrium prices, we account for the forward looking behaviors of consumers and supplier. We first estimate a demand function that accounts for consumers' forward-looking behaviors and indirect network effects. And then, for the supply side, the pricing equation is obtained as an outcome of the Markov Perfect Nash Equilibrium in pricing. In doing so, we utilize numerical dynamic programming techniques. We apply our model to a data set obtained from the U.S. video game console market. The video game console market is considered a prototypical case of two-sided markets in which the platform typically subsidizes one side of market to expand the installed base anticipating larger revenues in the other side of market resulting from the expanded installed base. The data consist of monthly observations of price, hardware unit sales and the number of compatible software titles for Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 from September 1996 to August 2002. Sony PlayStation was released to the market a year before Nintendo 64 was launched. We compute the expected equilibrium price path for Nintendo 64 and Playstation for both oligopoly and for monopoly. Our analysis reveals that the price level differs significantly between two competition structures. The merged monopoly is expected to set prices higher by 14.8% for Sony PlayStation and 21.8% for Nintendo 64 on average than the independent firms in an oligopoly would do. And such removal of competition would result in a reduction in consumer value by 43.1%. Higher prices are expected for the hypothetical monopoly because the merged firm does not need to engage in the battle for industry standard. This result is attributed to the distinct property of a two-sided market that competing firms tend to set low prices particularly at the initial period to attract consumers at the introductory stage and to reinforce their own networks and eventually finally to dominate the market.

Market Pioneering Game for Symmetric Players

  • In this paper, we consider with a market pioneering game among symmetric firms in highly competitive situation. To describe the puzzling situation of timing competition, we construct a dynamic game model and explore the equilibrium solution. As a result, we find a subgame perfect mixed strategy Nash equilibrium conceptually defined by 't$_{0}$ + .elsilon. equilibrium'. Our major finding s include : i) market entry will be occurred in sequential manner even though the condition of each firm is symmetric ii) the optimal timing of market pioneering will be advanced until almost all of the monopolist's profit is dissipated, iii) as the market position of the pioneer is stronger, the timings of the pioneer and the follower are separated, iv) and as the slope of the profit flow is steeper, the entry timing of the two players will be pooled together.

  • This paper dealt with a pincers-type gripper being able to grip a heavy-weighted cylindrical object having various size with itself. This gripper should be designed to seize the objects without any change of jaw shape. Grasping achieved equilibrium after the object slipped on the jaw while grasping it. To cope with this situation, we suggested the slip considered gripper design procedure based on grasping equilibrium. The obtained slip condition can provide a limit friction coefficient depending on the contact angle when initiating contact between jaw and object. Consequently, the gripping force and the required actuating force can be calculated. In order to verify the proposed slip condition, the simulations were performed using a dynamic software.

  • An ideal traffic control system should consider simultaneously both route guidance of vehicles and signal policies at intersection of a traffic network. It is known that an iterative procedure gives an optimal route to each vehicle in the network. This paper presents an iterative procedure to find an optimal signal plan for the network. We define the optimal solution as a signal equilibrium. From the definition of signal equilibrium, we prove that the fixed point solution of the iterative procedure is a signal equilibrium, when optimal signal algorithms are implemented at each intersection of the network. A combined model of route guidance and signal planning is also suggested by relating the route guidance procedure and the signal planning procedure into a single loop iterative procedure.

  • In Lagrangian mechanics, attention is directed at the body as it moves through space. Each body point is identified by the position it would have if the body were to occupy an arbitrary reference configuration. A result of this approach is that the analyst often describes the body by using quantities that may involve more than one configuration. This is particularly common in incremental calculations and in changes of the choice of reference configuration. With the rise of very powerful computing machinery, the popularity of numerical calculation has become great. Unfortunately, the mechanical theory has been evolved in a piecemeal fashion so that it has become a conglomeration of differently developed patches. The current work presents a unified development of the equilibrium principle. The starting point is the conservation of momentum. All details of configuration are shown. Finally, full dynamic and static forms are presented for total and incremental work.

  • This paper presents swing up and stabilization control of an underactuated two-link robot called the Pendubot. This device is a two-link planar robot with an actuator at the shoulder, but no actuator at the elbow. The controller swings up first link from its open loop stable equilibrium point to the unstable equilibrium point and then, catches the unactuated second link to balance it there. Two control algorithms are used for this task. Proportional Derivative Control technique is used to design the swing up control. The linear model of Pendubot is obtained by linearizing the nonlinear dynamic equations about the desired equilibrium point and LQR technique is used to design a stabilization controller.

Investigation of the observed solar coronal plasma in EUV and X-rays in non-equilibrium ionization state

  • During a major solar eruption, the erupting plasma is possibly out of the equilibrium ionization state because of its rapid heating or cooling. The non-equilibrium ionization process is important in a rapidly evolving system where the thermodynamical time scale is shorter than the ionization or recombination time scales. We investigate the effects of non-equilibrium ionization on EUV and X-ray observations by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamic Observatory and X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board Hinode. For the investigation, first, we find the emissivities for all the lines of ions of elements using CHIANTI 8.07, and then we find the temperature responses multiplying the emissivities by the effective area for each AIA and XRT passband. Second, we obtain the ion fractions using a time-dependent ionization model (Shen et al. 2015), which uses an eigenvalue method, for all the lines of ion, as a function of temperature, and a characteristic time scale, $n_et$, where $n_e$ and t are density and time, respectively. Lastly, the ion fractions are multiplied to the temperature response for each passband, which results in a 2D grid for each combination of temperature and the characteristic time scale. This is the set of passband responses for plasma that is rapidly ionized in a current sheet or a shock. We investigate an observed event which has a relatively large uncertainty in an analysis using a differential emission measure method assuming equilibrium ionization state. We verify whether the observed coronal plasmas are in non-equilibrium or equilibrium ionization state using the passband responses.

MLS 차분법을 활용한 동적 균열전파해석의 Rayleigh 감쇠영향 분석 (A Study of Rayleigh Damping Effect on Dynamic Crack Propagation Analysis using MLS Difference Method)

  • 본 논문은 강형식 기반의 MLS 차분법에 Rayleigh 감쇠효과를 적용한 동적균열진전 해석기법을 제시한다. Rayleigh 감쇠 효과가 반영된 동적 평형방정식과 구성방정식을 도출하고, MLS 미분근사식을 이용하여 지배방정식들을 이산화하였다. 평형방정식뿐만 아니라 구성방정식에서도 감쇠효과를 적절하게 고려하여 기존의 무요소 강정식화 기법에서 고려하지 못했던 비례감쇠 알고리즘을 구현하였다. 시간관련 항을 포함한 동적 평형방정식은 중앙차분법(central difference method)을 이용하여 시간적분 하였고, 속도에 대한 차분식을 lagging시켜 이산화 방정식을 간소화시켰다. 균열의 기하학적 특성은 표면력 '0'인 자연경계 조건을 균열면에 놓인 절점들에 부과하여 묘사하였으며, 균열성장으로 인해 해석단계마다 변하는 절점의 생성 및 이동 효과를 계방정식 구성에 반영하였다. 단일균열과 다중균열을 갖는 수치예제를 통해서 제안된 수치기법의 정확성을 검증하였으며, 비례감쇠 효과의 고려가 동적균열진전 해석결과에 미치는 영향을 보였다.

보조계면활성제가 NP7 계면활성제 시스템의 마이크로에멀젼 형성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (Effect of Cosurfactant on Microemulsion Phase Behavior in NP7 Surfactant System)

  • 본 연구에서는 보조계면활성제 첨가가 NP7 비이온 계면활성제, 물, 탄화수소 오일의 3성분으로 이루어진 시스템의 평형 및 동적 거동에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 실험에서 사용한 n-pentanol, n-octanol, n-decanol 등의 보조계면활성제는 모두 소수성 첨가제로 작용하여, 알코올 첨가에 따라 oil in water (O/W) microemulsion (${\mu}E$)이 excess 오일상과 평형을 이루는 2상 영역으로부터 middle-phase ${\mu}E$이 excess water, excess 오일상과 각각 평형을 이루는 3상 영역을 거쳐서 water in oil (W/O) ${\mu}E$이 excess 물상과 평형을 이루는 2상으로 전이되었다. 또한 알코올의 사슬 길이 증가 및 첨가량 증가에 따라 상전이 온도는 감소하였다. O/W ${\mu}E$이 존재하는 조건에서는 비극성 오일의 종류와 상관없이 오일이 계면활성제 마이셀에 의하여 가용화되어 시간에 따라 오일의 크기가 감소하였다. 한편 middle-phase ${\mu}E$를 포함한 3상이 형성되는 조건에서는 매우 낮은 계면장력으로 인하여 오일이 수용액 상에 빠른 속도로 가용화되었고 작은 drop 형태로 유화되었다. 반면에 W/O ${\mu}E$의 2상을 형성하는 조건에서는 과포화로 인하여 일어나는 자발적 유화 현상과 물과 계면활성제의 오일상으로의 확산으로 인한 오일의 크기 증가가 관찰되었다. 비극성 탄화수소 오일과 계면활성제 수용액 사이의 시간에 따른 계면장력 측정 결과는 동적 거동 실험결과와 일치하는 경향을 나타내었다.

복부 할로잉 운동과 복부 브레이싱 운동이 동적 균형에 미치는 즉각적 효과 (Immediate Effects of Abdominal Hollowing Exercise and Abdominal Bracing Exercise on Dynamic Balance)

  • 목적:본 연구는 복부 할로잉 운동과 복부 브레이싱 운동을 통해 동적 균형에 미치는 즉각적 효과를 알아 보고자 실시하였다. 방법: 성인 남녀 학생 90명을 대상으로 하였고, Y-균형검사와 기능적 팔 뻗기 검사를 이용하여 측정하였다. 결과: 그룹 간의 동적 균형 검사에서, 특히 복부 할로잉 운동을 실시한 그룹과 대조군 사이에 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 결론: 대표적인 척추안정화 운동 복부 할로잉 운동과 복부 브레이싱 운동 모두 동적균형의 증가에 있어 유의미하지만, 즉각적 효과라는 측면에서 어떠한 방법이 더 효과적이라고 제시하는 것은 어렵다.
