  • The equilibrium and dynamic adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions by activated carbons have been studied. The equilibrium studies have been carried out on two samples of activated carbon fibres and two samples of granulated activated carbons. These activated carbons have different BET surface areas and are associated with varying amounts of carbon oxygen surface groups. The amounts of these surface groups was enhanced by oxidation with $HNO_3$ and $O_2$ gas at $350^{\circ}C$ and decreased by degassing at increasing temperatures of $400^{\circ}$, $650^{\circ}$ and $950^{\circ}C$. The adsorption increases on oxidation of the carbon surface and decreases on degassing. The increase in adsorption has been attributed to the formation of acidic carbon-oxygen surface groups and the decrease in adsorption on degassing to their elimination. The dynamic adsorption studies have been carried out on the two granulated activated carbons using two 50 mm diameter glass columns at a feed concentration of 300 mg/L and at different hydraulic loading rates (HLR) and bed heights. The minimum achievable concentrations are comparatively lower while the adsorption capacities are higher for GAC-S under the same operating conditions. The adsorption capacity of a carbon increases with increase in HLR but the rate of increase decreases at higher HLR values.

  • Radionuclides such as Cs and Sr were removed from dilute aqueous solutions by means of inorganic adsorbents, 13X and chabazite. The physical adsorption obeyed the DA equation and non-equilibrium dynamic adsorption model, which describes surface diffusion mechanism with the DA equation, simulated the adsorption behavior of cesium and strontium on zeolite in fixed bed adsorbers. The dynamic model simulated the adsorption behavior of cesium and strontium.

  • The main objective of this study is to understand the regeneration step of the PTSA(Pressure and thermal swing adsorption) process below the atmospheric pressure by rigorous dynamic simulation. This target process is to recover toluene using activated carbon as an adsorbent. To do this, the dynamic simulations for the regeneration step are performed at 360, 490, 590mmHg and at high temperature after the simulation of the adsorption step at latm and 298K. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the column dynamics of the adsorption systems. This model is based on non-equilibrium, non-isothermal and non-adiabatic conditions, and axial dispersion and heat conduction are also considered. Heat transfer resistances are considered in gas-solid, gas-column wall and column wall-outside air. The LDF(Linear Driving Force) approximation model describes the mass transfer rate between the gas and solid phase. This study shows that the recovery of toluene by PTSA is more preferable than that by general TSA.

  • This study was undertaken to judge the quality of air-tightened exhibition cases and to predict the dynamic variation of the relative humidity in the showcase. We performed a lot of experiments for the a few conditions and we numerically calculated the air change rate and the relative humidity in the showcase with the Artsorb under the same conditions. In all cases we confirmed that the numerical results about the relative humidity in the showcase had a good agreement with the experimental ones. Through the experiments of humidity control, we found out that the adsorption efficiency is varied with the location and the amount of the Artsorb. And the numerical results showed that the adsorption material is always needed to keep on the appropriate humidity condition in the showcase even though any kind of the showcases are used.

  • In order to predict the dynamic behaviors of uranium and cobalt in a fixed bed at various influent pH values of liquid waste, the adsorption system was regarded as multi-component adsorption between each ionic species in a solution. Langmuir isotherm parameters of each species were extracted by incorporating equilibrium data with the solution chemistry of uranium and cobalt using IAST. Prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental data, except for a high concentration and pH. Although there was some limitations in predicting the cobalt adsorption, this method may be useful in analyzing a complex adsorption system where various kinds of ionic species exist in a solution.

  • The purpose of this work is to study the adsorption and desorption characteristics of acetone vapor and toluene vapor from adsorption tower in the VOCs recovery device. The six kinds of activated carbon with different pore structures were used and the adsorption and desorption characteristics were compared according to pore structure, desorption temperature, and adsorption method, respectively. Adsorption capacity of acetone vapor and toluene vapor by batch method was higher than that by dynamic method. Especially, activated carbon with medium-sized or large pores had more difference in adsorption capacity according to adsorption methods as a result of gradually condensation of vapors on relatively mesopore and large pores. Activated carbons with relatively large pores and relatively small saturated adsorption capacity had excellent desorption ability.

  • The general objective of the present study was to investigate the potential application of the UV spectroscopic method for determination of the polymeric additives present in papermaking fibrous stock solutions. The study also intended to establish the surface-chemical retention model associated with the adsorption kinetics of additives on fiber surfaces. Polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) wet strength resin and imidazolinium quaternary (IZQ) softening agents were selected to evaluate the analytical method. Concentrations of PAE and IZQ in solution were proportional to the UV absorption at 314 and 400 nm, respectively. The time-dependent behavior of polymeric additives obeyed a mono-molecular layer adsorption as characterized in Langmuir-type expression. The kinetic modeling for polymeric adsorption on fiber surfaces was based on a concept that polymeric adsorption on fiber surfaces has two distinguishable stages including initial dynamic adsorption phase and the final near-equilibrium state. The simulation model predicted not only the real-time additive adsorption behavior for polymeric additives at high accuracy once the kinetic parameters were determined, but showed a good agreement with the experimental data. The spectroscopic method examined on the PAE and IZQ adsorption study could potentially be considered as an effective tool for the wet-end retention control as applied to the paper industry.
