Titanium aluminides have attracted special interest as light-weight/high-temperature materials for structural applications. The major problem limiting practical use of these compounds is their poor ductility and formability. The powder metallurgy processing route has been an attractive alternative for such materials. A mixture of Ti and Al elemental powders was fabricated to a mechanical alloying process. The processed powder was hot pressed in a vacuum, and a fully densified compact with ultra-fine grain structure consisting of Ti3Al intermetallic compound was obtained. During the compressive deformation of the compact at 1173 K, typical dynamic recrystallization (DR), which introduces a certain extent of grain refinement, was observed. The compact had high density and consisted of an ultra-fine equiaxial grain structure. Average grain diameter was 1.5 ㎛. Typical TEM micrographs depicting the internal structure of the specimen deformed to 0.09 true strain are provided, in which it can be seen that many small recrystallized grains having no apparent dislocation structure are generated at grain boundaries where well-developed dislocations with high density are observed in the neighboring grains. The compact showed a large m-value such as 0.44 at 1173 K. Moreover, the grain structure remained equiaxed during deformation at this temperature. Therefore, the compressive deformation of the compact was presumed to progress by superplastic flow, primarily controlled by DR.
The high temperature deformation behavior of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites and Al-Si matrix was studied by hot torsion test in a range of temperature from $270^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$ and at strain rate range of $1.2{\times}10_{-3}~2.16{\times}10_{-1}/sec$. The hot restoration mechanisms for both matrix and composites were found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) from the investigation of flow curves and microstructural evolutions. The Si precipitates and SiC particles promoted DRX, and the peak strain$({\varepsilon}_p)$ of the composites was smaller than that of the matrix. Flow stresses of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites were found to be generally higher than the matrix, but the difference was quite small at higher temperature due to the decrease of capability of load transfer by SiC particles. With increasing temperature, failure strain of matrix and composites are inclined to increase, the increasing value of failure strain for the $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites was small compared to that of matrix. The stress dependence of both materials on strain rate() and temperature(T) was examined by hyperbolic sine law, $\.{\varepsilon}=A_1[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma})]_n$exp(-Q/RT)

The forging process design and microstructure evolution for gas turbine disk of a Waspaloy is investigated in this study. Parameters related to deformation are die and preform geometry, and forging temperature of die and workpiece. Die and preform design are considered to reduce the forging load, and to avoid the forging defects. Blocker and finisher dies for multistage forging are designed and the initial billet geometry is determined. The control of hot forging parameters such as strain, strain rate and temperature also is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range 900-$1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range 0.01-1.0s-1 using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are required represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized volume fraction by various tests. In this study, we used to thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling equation of DEFORM-2D to predict the microstructure change evolution during thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure is updated during the entire thermal and deformation processes in forging.
The nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A possesses the excellent strength, and the resistance against corrosion, creep and oxidation at high temperature. Its products are used in aerospace engineering, marine engineering and power generation, etc. Control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature and holding time is important because change of the microstructure in hot working affects the mechanical properties. Change of the microstructure evolves by recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phenomena. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range of $950\~1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of $0.05\~5s^{-1}$ using hot compression tests. The metadynamic recrystallization and grain growth evolution has been studied in the temperature range of $950\~1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range $0.05,\;5s^{-1}$, holding time range of 5, 10, 100, 600 sec using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are proposed to represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. Parameters in modeling equations are expressed as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The modeling equation for grain growth is expressed as a function of the initial grain size and holding time. The modeling equations developed were combined with thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling to predict the microstructure change evolution during hot forging process. The grain size predicted from FE simulation results is compared with results obtained in field product.

To reduce the forming load due to the temperature drop, during the hot forging process, a reheating hot forging process design is required that to repeat heating and forging. However, if the critical strain required for recrystallization is not induced during forging and grain growth becomes dominant due to the reduction in dislocation density due to repeated heating, the mechanical properties may deteriorate. Therefore, in this study, Inconel 706 alloy was applied, and the grain refinement behavior was comparatively analyzed according to the number of reheating times and effective strain during reheating hot forging process. Reheating was carried out with a total compression rate of 40% up to 4 times. The Inconel 706 compression test specimens heated once showed finer grains as the effective strain increased due to the dynamic recrystallization phenomenon. However, as the number of heating increases, grain refinement was observed even in a low effective strain distribution of 0.43 due to static recrystallization during reheating. Moreover, grain growth occurs at a relatively low effective strain of 0.43 when the number of reheating is four or more. Therefore, it was effective to apply an effective strain of 0.43 or more during hot forging to Inconel 706 in order to induce crystallization through grain refinement and improve the properties of forged products. In addition, we could notice that up to three reheating times condition was appropriate to prevent grain growth and maintain fine grain size.
Hot restoration mechanism flow stress and stain of the Al2024 composites reinforced with 1,8,15,36, and $44{\mu}m\;SiC_p$(10 vol. %) were studied by hot torsion tests. The hot restoration mechanism of all the composites was found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) at $320^{\circ}C$ while that of the composites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ was found to be dynamic recovery(DRX) at $480^{\circ}C$. It was found that the Al2024 composite with $15{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed the highest flow stress(${\sim}$223 MPa) at $320^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also the highest flow strain of the composites was obtained at $430^{\circ}C$. The com-posites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed lower flow stress and higher flow strain at $480^{\circ}C$ than those of the composites reinforced with 15, 36, and $44\;{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ These result were discussed in relation to the transition of the hot restoration mechanism. $DRX{\leftrightarrow}DRV$. The dependence of flow stress on strain rate and temperature was attempted to fit with the hyperbolic sine equation ($\dot{\varepsilon}=A[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma}_p]^n$ exp(-Q/RT)and Zener-Hollomon parameter($Z=\;\dot{\varepsilon}\;exp(Q/RT))$.
A finite element analysis is performed to predict the recrystallized volume fraction and the mean grain size in hot compression of Al-5wt%Mg alloy. In the analysis, a modeling equation of flow stress is assumed as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature. And the influence of above varibles on flow stress is quantified by using Zener-Hollomon Parameter. In the modeling equation, effects of strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization on microstructure of Al-5wt%Mg alloy are investigated. The predicted results of recrystallized volume fraction and mean grain size are in good agreement with those of microstructures obtained from hot compression tests.
Hot deformation behavior of GCD-50 cast iron has been investigated by employing the compressive test. Phenomenological deformation behaviors, which were modeled based on the dynamic materials model and the kinetic model, have been correlated with the microstructural change taken place during compression. Microstructural investigation revealed that the adiabatic shear band caused by the locallized deformation was taken place in low temperature and high strain rate. On the other hand, the wavy and curved grain boundaries, which repersent the occurrence of dynamic microstructure change such as dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization, were observed in high temperature and low strain rate. Deformation model based on hyperbolic sine law has also been suggested.

Hot-compression tests were carried out to investigate the hot workability of Ti64 and Ti6246 alloys at different temperatures and strain rates. Processing maps were developed on the basis of the dynamic material model unifying the relationship among constitutive behavior, hot workability and microstructure development. Stable regions, defined on the basis of four stability criteria 0${\delta}log(m)/\frac{\bot}{\varepsilon})<0$, s<1 and ${\delta}log(s)/\frac{\bot}{\varepsilon})<0$, were found to be associated with dynamic recovery and recrystallization.

The disappearance of continuous yielding and the formation of an extended region in engineering stress-strain curves at tempering temperatures of 673-873K is closely related to the reduction of mobile dislocations during tempering and dynamic recovery during tensile deformation. In addition, the occurrence of discontinuous yielding at tempering temperature above 923K would be attributed to the formation of new strain-free polygonal ferrite grain.
