Advanced material models for concrete are not widely available in general purpose finite element codes. Parameters to define them complicate the implementation because they are case sensitive. In addition to this, their validity under severe shear condition has not been verified. In this article, simple engineering plasticity material models available in a commercial finite element code are used to demonstrate that complicated shear behavior can be calculated with reasonable accuracy. For this purpose dynamic response of a squat shear wall that had been tested on a shaking table as part of an experimental program conducted in Japan is analyzed. Both the finite element and material aspects of the modeling are examined. A corrective artifice for general engineering plasticity models to account for shear effects in concrete is developed. The results of modifications in modeling the concrete in compression are evaluated and compared with experimental response quantities.

The near-tip field of mode-I dynamic cracks steadily propagating in a strain softening material is investigated under plane strain conditions. The material is assumed to be incompressible and its deformation obeys the $J_2$ flow theory of plasticity. A power-law stress-strain relation with strain softening is adopted to account for the damage behavior of materials near the dynamic crack tip. By assuming that the stresses and strain have the same singularity at the crack tip. this paper obtains a fully continuous dynamic crack-tip field in the damage region. Results show that the stress and strain components the same logarithmic singularity of (In(R/r))$\delta$, and the angular variations of filed quantities are identical to those corresponding to the dynamic cracks in the elastic-perfectly plastic material.
This study reviews dynamic deformation behavior of ultra-fine-grained Al alloys, ultra-fine-grained conventional low carbon steel and dual phase steel and Zr-based amorphous alloys. Dynamic tests were conducted using a Kolsky bar then the test data was analyzed in relation to resultant microstructures, mechanical properties and propensity of adiabatic shear band. In addition, deformed microstructures and fracture surfaces were used to investigate the behavior of both the dynamic deformation and fracture, and adiabatic shear banding. As a result, increasing microstructural homogeneity, strain hardenability and forming multiple shear bands could be a better way to increase the fracture resistance under dynamic loading as the formation of adiabatic shear bands was reduced or prevented.
The ratcheting behavior was studied experimentally for Z2CND18.12N elbow piping under cyclic bending and steady internal pressure. Dozens of cyclic plasticity models for structural ratcheting responses simulations were used in the paper. The four models, namely, Bilinear (BKH), Multilinear (MKIN/KINH), Chaboche (CH3), were already available in the ANSYS finite element package. Advanced cyclic plasticity models, such as, modified Chaboche (CH4), Ohno-Wang, modified Ohno-Wang, Abdel Karim-Ohno and modified Abdel Karim-Ohno, were implemented into ANSYS for simulating the experimental responses. Results from the experimental and simulation studies were presented in order to demonstrate the state of structural ratcheting response simulation by these models. None of the models evaluated perform satisfactorily in simulating circumferential strain ratcheting response. Further, improvement in cyclic plasticity modeling and incorporation of material and structural features, like time-dependent, temperature-dependent, non-proportional, dynamic strain aging, residual stresses and anisotropy of materials in the analysis would be essential for advancement of low-cycle fatigue simulations of structures.

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) process at room temperature has been newly proposed in recent years to overcome the shape accuracy and sticking problem induced in a conventional NIL process. Success of the room temperature NIL relies on the accurate understand of the mechanical behavior of the polymer. Since a conventional NIL process has to heat a polymer above the glass transition temperature to deform the physical shape of the polymer with a mold pattern, viscoelastic property of polymer have major effect on the NIL process. However, rate dependent behavior of polymer is important in the room temperature NIL process because a mold with engraved patterns is rapidly pressed onto a substrate coated with the polymer by the hydraulic equipment. In this paper, finite element analysis of the room temperature NIL process is performed with considering the strain rate dependent behavior of the polymer. The analyses with the variation of imprinting speed and imprinting pattern are carried out in order to investigate the effect of such process parameters on the room temperature NIL process. The analyses results show that the deformed shape and imprint force is quite different with the variation of punch speed because the dynamic behavior of the polymer is considered with the rate dependent plasticity model. The results provide a guideline for the determination of process conditions in the room temperature NIL process.

Around the Nakdong River which is one part of the repairing business of 4 Grand Rivers currently being constructed, sandy ground is distributed throughout the wide area. Many civil engineering structures such as small and medium sized dams, flood control basins, and redevelopment of reservoirs and retention reservoirs are scheduled to be constructed, so the prevention measures for liquefaction are surely needed. To identify such liquefaction, a lot of factor affecting the strength of liquefaction were studied through laboratory investigation. Most of the conducted study was about clean sands, but in the case of the real ground the sand can exist not in the clean conditions but in the conditions mostly including sand of fine grained soil. The sand of fine grained soil has become a significant factor to assess liquefaction because many cases of liquefaction happened in the silty and clayer soil. In this study, un-drained tests of plasticity index of fine grained particles were conducted with the sands from Nakdong River. In result, the study shows that dynamic shear strength characteristics differ according to the plasticity index.

The hysteretic behavior of steel structure under cyclic and dynami loading such as earthquake is different to that under static loading. Because structural steels on dynamic deformation is different to static deformation with respect with mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship. Therefore, to accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of steel structures such as circular steel columns under cyclic and dynamic loading, the difference of loading carrying capacity and deformation according to loading rate, assumed static and dynamic deformation state, must be investigated. In this study, numerical analyses of circular steel column using SM490 for change of loading rate and diameter-thickness ratio(D/t) were carried out by using three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis and dynamic cyclic plasticity model of SM490 developed by the authors. Characteristics of hysteretic behavior of circular steel column using SM490, load carrying capacity and energy dissipation ratio, were clarified by analysis results.
This paper addresses a viscoplastic constitutive model that allows a consistent way of modeling positive and negative rate sensitivities of flow stress concerned with dynamic strain aging. Based on the concept of continuum mechanics, a phenomenological constitutive model includes the use of a yield surface within the framework of unified viscoplasticity theory. To model negative rate sensitivity, rate-dependent back stress is introduced and flow stress in fully developed inelastic deformation regime is thus decomposed into the plastic contribution of rate independency and the viscous one of rate dependency.
The flow stress of 304 stainless steel during hot forming process were determined by conducting hot compression tests at the range of 1273 K∼1423 K and 0.05 /s∼2.0 /s as these are typical temperature and strain rate in hot forging operation. In this material, Dynamic recrystallization was found to be the major softening mechanism with this conditions as Previous studies. Based on the observed phenomena, a constitutive model of flow stress was assumed as a function of strain, strain rate, temperature. In the constitutive model, the effects of strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization were taken into consideration. A finite element method connected to constitutive model was performed to predict the dynamic recrystallization behaviors and also stress-strain curves in hot compression of 304 stainless steel.
In the current study, a new dynamic recrystallization model for predicting high temperature flow stress is developed based on a physical model and the mean field theory. In the model, the grain aggregate is assumed as a representative volume element to describe dynamic recrystallization. The flow stress and microstructure during dynamic recrystallization were calculated using three sub-models for work hardening, for nucleation and for growth. In the case of work hardening, a single parameter dislocation density model was used to calculate change of dislocation density and stress in the grains. For modeling nucleation, the nucleation criterion developed was based on the grain boundary bulge mechanism and a constant nucleation rate was assumed. Conventional rate theory was used for describing growth. The flow stress behavior of pure copper was investigated using the model and compared with experimental findings. Simulated results by cellular automata were used for validating the model.
