  • INCONEL 718, nickel based superalloy, has good formability, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at high temperature. Owing to theses attractive properties, it is utilized in applications such as combustion system, turbine engines and nuclear reactors. In such applications, components are typically required to be tolerant of high stress impact loading. This may cause material degradation and lead to catastrophic failure during service operation. Accurate understanding of material's mechanical properties with various strain rates is required in order to guarantee the reliability of structural parts made of INCONEL 718. This paper is concerned with the dynamic material properties of the INCONEL 718 at various strain rates. The dynamic response of the INCONEL 718 at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test and at the high strain rate is from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test. The effect of the strain rate on dynamic flow stress, work hardening characteristics, strain rate sensitivity and elongation to the failure is evaluated with the experimental results. Experimental results from both the quasi-static and the high strain rate up to 5000/sec are interpolated in order to construct the Johnson-Cook model as the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulate and design the structural parts made of rNCONEL 718.

오일시일의 동적거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Dynamic Behaviour of Oil Seals)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamic behaviour of rubber oil seals when the interferences between the shaft and the seal lip as well as the dynamic eccentricities are present. The micro-separation of the sealing gap was observed with the aid of an image processing apparatus. The temperature of the seal lip edge, friction torque and the dynamic sealing gap profile are experimentally investigated for the initial interference and the shaft eccentricity. The data was simultaneously measured under the operation conditions. Experimental results show that, as the shaft speed is increased, the leakage of sealed fluids is increasing for a certain range of shaft speeds. The test data indicates that the shaft eccentricity clearly produces the gap separation between the shaft and the seal lip which is unable to follow the radial displacement of shaft as the shaft speed increases.

  • A hybrid heat pump is under development with the goal of utilizing 120% of primary energy resources. A plate heat exchanger is added between the compressor and air-cooled condenser of an ordinary heat pump to heat water. For successful operation of the heat pump, it is necessary to develop a control algorithm under various operating conditions. As a virtual test bed for that purpose, a dynamic model has been developed, to simulate its dynamic behavior. It was modeled in transient one-dimensions, with varying phase lengths considered. The model was implemented in Matlab and Simulink. Simulation results were effectively applied to design a control algorithm. They also provided physical insight into how to design and operate the system.

  • Experiments were conducted to determine the structural dynamic characteristics of bump foil bearing. The housing of the bearing on the journal was driven by two shakers which were used to simulate dynamic forces acting on the bump foil strips. Three different bump foils(Cu-coated bump, silicon bump, viscoelastic bump) are tested and the dynamic coefficients of three bump foils compared, based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. From the test results, the high damping coefficients of viscoelastic bump are achieved and the possibility of the super-bending-critical operation is suggested.

  • The main objective of the study is to provide the criteria for determining the proper life cycle of rebuiled diesel-electric locomotive currently being operated in KNR. We predicted the most critical sections of the underframes and tested the diesel-electric locomotive vehicle to measure dynamic stresses applied to the underframes. The fileld test of the diesel-electric locomotive estimated 17.08years based on the fatigue-life estimation when they are continuously used in the present operation condition.

Large eddy simulation of wind effects on a super-tall building

  • A new inflow turbulence generation method and a combined dynamic SGS model recently developed by the authors were applied to evaluate the wind effects on 508 m high Taipei 101 Tower. Unlike the majority of the past studies on large eddy simulation (LES) of wind effects on tall buildings, the present numerical simulations were conducted for the full-scale tall building with Reynolds number greater than $10^8$. The inflow turbulent flow field was generated based on the new method called discretizing and synthesizing of random flow generation technique (DSRFG) with a prominent feature that the generated wind velocity fluctuations satisfy any target spectrum and target profiles of turbulence intensity and turbulence integral length scale. The new dynamic SGS model takes both advantages of one-equation SGS model and a dynamic production term without test-filtering operation, which is particular suitable to relative coarse grid situations and high Reynolds number flows. The results of comparative investigations with and without generation of inflow turbulence show that: (1) proper simulation of an inflow turbulent field is essential in accurate evaluation of dynamic wind loads on a tall building and the prescribed inflow turbulence characteristics can be adequately imposed on the inflow boundary by the DSRFG method; (2) the DSRFG can generate a large number of random vortex-like patterns in oncoming flow, leading to good agreements of both mean and dynamic forces with wind tunnel test results; (3) The dynamic mechanism of the adopted SGS model behaves adequately in the present LES and its integration with the DSRFG technique can provide satisfactory predictions of the wind effects on the super-tall building.

원더링 장비 적용을 통한 아스팔트 포장 거동 특성 연구 (A Study on Behavioral Characteristics of Asphalt Pavements using Wandering Measurement Devices)

  • 오늘날 도로포장은 중차량의 증가와 고온현상으로 인하여 도로파손이 급격하게 증가하고 있다. 이러한 이유로 한국도로공사에서는 시험도로운영센터를 설립하였으며, 여기서는 실제 도로에서의 상황을 모사하여 현장적용성이 우수한 데이터를 얻어 포장의 장기공용성 예측을 보다 효율적으로 하고자 하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 장기공용성 예측을 위하여 원더링 장비를 개발하고자 하였으며 이를 적용, 동적하중 재하시험을 실시하였다. 이를 통해 아스팔트 도로포장의 거동 특성을 파악하였다. 결과적으로 원더링을 적용하여 아스팔트 포장의 거동 특성을 해석한 결과 전 층 단면에서 영향을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 원더링을 적용한 포장의 장기공용성 예측은 기존의 연구방법보다 정확한 예측이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

  • 비선형특성을 갖고 있는 실제 무인기용 소형터보제트엔진의 운전 중 발생하는 결함을 효과적으로 탐지하기 위한 방안에 대해 연구하였다. 이를 위해서 동적 열역학 사이클해석을 통한 비선형 동특성 모델을 도출하였다. 실제적인 운전상황의 연출을 위해 잡음특성의 평가에 부합하는 무향칼만필터를 적용하였고 필터성능이 가미된 제어기를 설계하였다. 엔진회전수 센서의 결함을 통한 엔진 결함발생을 모사하였고, 발생된 결함의 실시간적인 탐지 방안으로 연속확률비 평가기법을 도입하였다. 이를 운전 중 엔진결함탐지에 적용한 결과 분명한 결정양상을 보임으로써 매우 효과적이고 유용함을 확인하였다.

  • 보통의 2탑 증류시스템에서 사용하는 2기의 증류탑을 활용하여 열복합 증류시스템을 구성하고, 제안된 증류탑의 운전특성을 알아보기 위하여 시스템의 동특성을 조사하였다. 계단응답을 이용한 3가지 제품의 제어 방안을 알아내기 위하여, 상부제품의 유량, 중간제품의 유량, 재비기의 증기발생량을 변화하였다. 그 결과로부터 $3{\times}3$의 제어구조를 제시하였다. 제안된 제어시스템에 PI 제어기를 사용하였을 때의 제어성능을 조사한 결과 하부제품의 농도관리가 가장 어려움을 알 수 있었으나, 본 연구의 증류시스템 운전이 가능함을 알았다.

유압식 어로 윈치 시뮬레이터의 동적 거동 특성 (Dynamic Characteristics of a Hydraulic Fishing Winch Simulator)

  • To meet the increasing demand from various fishing fields for training of fishing equipment operators, a fishing winch simulator was designed to train maritime students in the correct and safe operation of hydraulic winches under various load conditions related to fishing operations. The aim of this study is to describe the basic dynamic characteristics of the newly developed hydraulic fishing winch simulator and particularly to analyze the mechanical responses produced on the winch operation controls. The winch simulator consists of two winch units, a computer control and data acquisition system, a control consol and other associated mechanisms. When one winch is in hauling mode, the other one will always be in loading mode. The revolution speed of the hauling winch was controlled by a proportional directional control valve, and the braking torque of the loading winch was controlled by a proportional pressure control valve. The simulation experiments indicated that the dynamic characteristics of the hauling winch followed the braking response characteristics of the loading winch. The tests also showed that the warp speed and tension linearly depend on the pressure differential across the motor of the loading winch controlled by operating the proportional pressure control valve during the hauling operation. The experience gained from various training courses showed that the fishing winch simulator was very realistic and it was valuable for training novice winch operators. The results of the winch simulation exercise were recorded and used to evaluate the training on the operation and handling of the winch system. From these test results, we concluded that the tension acting on the warp during hauling operations can successfully be simulated by controlling the pressure differential across the motor with step changes of the control input signal to the proportional pressure control valve of the loading winch.
