  • This study investigates the seismic energy dissipation capacity of a hybrid passive damper composed of a friction and a hysteretic slit damper. The capacity of the hybrid device required to satisfy a given target performance of a reinforced concrete moment resisting frame designed with reduced design base shear is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process, and the seismic performances of the structures designed without and with the hybrid dampers are verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses. Fragility analysis is carried out to investigate the probability of a specified limit state to be reached. The analysis results show that in the structure with hybrid dampers the residual displacements are generally reduced and the dissipated inelastic energy is mostly concentrated on the dampers. At the Moderate to Extensive damage states the fragility turned out to be smallest in the structure with the hybrid dampers.

  • Three phase full bridge rectifier has been used to obtain dc voltage from three phase ac voltage source. The rectifier system has drawbacks that power factor is low and power flow is unidirectional. Therefore, when dc voltage increases due to regeneration of power the dynamic resister for dissipation of regeneration power must be installed. But three phase PWM converter can be controlled to operate with unity power factor and bidirectional power flow. Therefore when the PWM converter is used as do supply system, the dissipating resistor is not necessary. On this thesis, in order to design a controller having good performance, the hee phase PWM converter is completely modeled by using circuit DQ-transformation and thus a general and simple instructive equivalent circuit is obtained; the inductor set becomes a second order gyrator-coupled system and three phase inverter becomes a transformer as well. Under given phase angle(${\alpha}$) and modulation index(MI) of the three phase inverter, the dc and ac characteristics are obtained by analysis of the transformed equivalent circuit The validity of the equivalent circuit is confirmed through PSPICE simulation. And based on the dc and ac characteristics a controller with unity power factor is proposed.

  • Most recent seismic design codes include Response Modification Factor(RMF) for determining equivalent lateral forces. The RMF is used to reduce the linear elastic design spectrum to account for the energy dissipation capacity, overstrength and damping of the structure. In this study the RMF is defined as the ratio of the absolute maximum linear elastic base shear to the absolute maximum nonlinear base shear of a structure subject to the same earthquake accelerogram. This study investigates the effect of hysteretic model, as well as target ductility ratio and natural period on duct based RMF using nonlinear dynamic analyses of the SDOF systems. Special emphasis is given to the effects of the hysteretic characteristics such as strength deterioration and stiffness degradation. Results indicate that RMFs are dependent on ductility, period and hysteretic model.

  • Dynamic monitoring of weld pool formation and seam deviations using infrared vision is described in this paper. Isothermal contours representing heat dissipation characteristics during the process of arc welding were analysed and processed using imaging techniques. Maximum bead width and penetration were recorded and the geometric position in relation to the welding seam was measured at each sampling point. Deviations from the desired bead geometry and welding path were sensed and their thermographic representations were digitised and welding path were sensed and their thermographic representations were digitised and subsequently identified. Evidence suggested that infrared thermography can be utilized to compensate for inaccuracies encountered in real-time during robotic arc welding.

  • A low power 6-bit flash ADC that uses an input voltage range detection algorithm is described. An input voltage level detector circuit has been designed to overcome the disadvantages of the flash ADC which consume most of the dynamic power dissipation due to comparators array. In this work, four digital input voltage range detectors are employed and each input voltage range detector generates the specific clock signal only if the input voltage falls between two adjacent reference voltages applied to the detector. The specific clock signal generated by the detector is applied to turn the corresponding latched comparators on and the rest of the comparators off. This ADC consumes 68.82 mW with a single power supply of 1.2V and achieves 4.3 effective number of bits for input frequency up to 1 MHz at 500 MS/s. Therefore it results in 4.6 pJ/step of Figure of Merit (FoM). The chip is fabricated in 0.13-um CMOS process.

  • Heat dissipation technology using flow resonant phenomenon is a kind of new concept in heat transfer area. A vibration exciter is needed to generate air turbulence which has the natural shedding frequency of heat system. A mechanical vibrating device for the air flow oscillation is introduced, which is driven by a moving coil actuator. An analytical dynamic model for this mechanical vibration exciter is presented and its validity is verified by the comparison with experimental data. Values of some unknown system parameters in the analytic model are estimated through the system identification approach. Based on this mathematical model, a high bandwidth vibration phase, it turns out the high modal resonant characteristics of vibrating plate are the major barrier against obtaining a high bandwidth vibration exciter.

  • Recently, the response of a high-rise building to external dynamic force created by wind and earthquake has received much attention. This response is dependent on wind intensity, surrounding environment, building size, shape, mass, stiffness and amount of energy dissipation available in the system. The study has been done on these parameters. Attempts have been made to increase the damping in building system and thereby reduce structural response. These attempts have centered on adding an energy-dissipative system(passive tuned mass damper; passive TMD) to the building system and increasing the overall effective damping. In this paper the optimum condition of passive TMD will be derived with respect to random excitation and the properties of the optimum condition will have been studied.

  • Nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of a structure with energy dissipation devices is complicated and time consuming. In this regard the nonlinear static analysis is a practical alternative for evaluating the earthquake resisting capacity of a structure. In this study the nonlinear static response of a structure was obtained first, and the equivalent viscous modal damping ratio required to satisfy the performance objective was computed in the capacity spectrum format. Then proper amount of viscous dampers were installed to provide the required damping. Parametric study has been performed for the period of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with viscous dampers designed in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the target displacements that was used in the beginning of the design process.

  • Diffuser is an important fluid-mechanical equipment to convert kinetic energy into pressure energy. Many of the experimental and theoretical researches have been done in a diffuser but the understanding of energy transfer and detailed mechanism of energy dissipation is unclear. In this study, computations were performed using a numerical method with SIMPLE algorithm for conical diffuser with various diffuser angles and diffuser lengths. Also, we investigated the pressure recovery coefficient in conical diffuser by inserting strut. In this paper, we showed that the strut can cause a rising pressure recovery.

  • Reburning is an efficient combustion technology to reduce nitrogen oxide by injecting hydro-carbon fuel to the downstream of the main combustion. In this paper LPG has been used not only as main fuel but also as reburn fuel and air was used as an oxidizer with 15kW swirl burner. Experimental studies have been done to evaluate effect of reburning for NOx reduction. Also to examine the effect of the amount of burnout air for complete combustion by reburn fuel on NOx reduction, test was conducted by reducing the amount of burnout air. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation was performed using the commercial CFD code FLUENT 6.3 to simulate experimental results and investigate the thermo-chemical characteristics. An evaluation of reaction models for swirl burner has been carried out for propane-air with two step finite-rate eddy-dissipation model in FLUENT.
