Recent studies revealed that fine dust in ambient air may cause various health problems such as respiratory diseases and cancer. To prevent the toxic effects of fine dust, it is important to predict the concentration of fine dust in advance and to identify factors that are closely related to fine dust. In this study, we developed a Bayesian network model for predicting PM10 concentration in Seoul, Korea, and visualized the relationship between important factors. The network was trained by using air quality and meteorological data collected in Seoul between 2018 and 2021. The study results showed that current PM10 concentration, season, carbon monoxide (CO) were the top 3 effective factors in 24 hours ahead prediction of PM10 concentration in Seoul, and that there were interactive effects.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of fine particles concentration and meteorological parameters, and long range transport of wintertime Asian dust at Busan. Also we studied occurrence frequency and tendency of wintertime Asian dust from 1961 to 2010 in Korea. Asian dust occurred most frequently in the spring, the next to winter in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust is steadily increasing recently. Asian dust in Busan was the most occurred in 2001 with 21 days, followed by 12 days in 2002, and 10 days in 2006. The annual mean frequency during the past 12 years(1999~2010) was 7.5 days, and it was two times more than that during the past 50 years(3.8 days). Wintertime Asian dust in Busan has occurred 6 episodes since 2008, and it all occurred in December except for 20 Feb. 2009. The highest concentration of wintertime Asian dust was recorded mostly at Hakjangdong and Jangrimdong which are industrial area. Maintenance time of Asian dust at Busan was from 1hr 30min to 9hr 20min, it was shorter than in the spring. It took from 10 to 15 hours move to Busan after Asian dust was first detected in Korea. Wintertime Asian dust originated from Gobi desert in Mongolia and inner Mongolia near China, except for 9 Dec. 2008 at Busan.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate quartz concentrations in airborne respirable dust and particle size-related quartz concentrations. Methods: Respirable dust samples were collected using a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone equipped with a 37 mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size PVC filter. Dust samples were collected with a Marple's personal cascade impactor from stone grinding operations in five stone-related business located in the Gyeongsangbuk-do area. Results: The geometric mean of quartz concentration in the respirable dust was $0.170mg/m^3$, and the rate of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit(KOEL) was 93.3%. The quartz concentration by particle size shows that it was the highest($0.115mg/m^3$) in stage 5($3.50-6.00{\mu}m$), which corresponds with the size of respirable particle. The smaller the particle sizes were, the higher quartz the content became. The mass fractions of inhalable, thoracic, and respirable dust were 72.1%, 36.0%, and 14.4%. Conclusions: The rate of the quartz concentration in respirable dust from stone grinding operations exceeding the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values was 100%, which means proper work environmental management is required through regular working environmental measurements. Given that the stone grinding operations had a higher small size dust concentrations, there is a need to reduce respirable dust, such as through wet operation and local exhaust ventilation.
The research was conducted to simulate and interpret the change of $PM_{10}$ profile by Asian dust using the CALPUFF modeling system for the period April 6 through 18, 2001. The results, which are represented a daily variation of $PM_{10}$ concentration before and after Asian dust, was located between a minimum concentration of $50{\mu}g/m^3$ and a maximum concentration of $100{\mu}g/m^3$, Most concentration peaks in the $PM_{10}$ profile were shown within a level below 500 m and had a pattern that rapidly increased up the peak and decreased after the peak to 1000 m. Even though the shapes of the vertical profile during Asian dust days were similar to non-Asian dust days, no rapid change vertically was observed. In particular, the vertical profile on 1200 LST and 1800 LST was noticeably shifted to the higher concentrations, which means $PM_{10}$ in the atmosphere was changed into a vertically and horizontally heterogeneous form under the Asian dust event. Finally, it is con-firmed that the simulation result from CALPUFF might schematically sketched atmospheric $PM_{10}$ profiles and their change by Asian dust throughout the comparison with profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients, which were acquired from Lidar measurement at KGAWO.
A new harbor as been constructing in Gadukdo. However, a lot of fugitive dust gas been often generated from construction site reclaiming sea sand, especially when the Northwester is blown strongly. It has resulted insome appeals of residents in Gadukdo. In this study, we estimated the amount of fugitive dust caused by new harbor construction using Fugitive dust formula. Also, the concentration of PM10 for recipient is predicted by AERMOD. The amount of fugitive dust is 26.56 ${\mu}g/sec{\cdot}m^2$ and 11.84 ${\mu}g/sec{\cdot}m^2$ respectively by the Fugitive dust formula. PM10 outlet concentration and the amount of fugitive dust increase according to wind velocity and directions. AERMOD is performed on the basis of weather data and the amount of fugitive dust generated with wind velocity. As a result of AERMOD, the PM10 concentration of Sunchang and Oinul are predicted over 100 ${\mu}g/m^3$. The PM10 concentration of Sunchang and Oinul are predicted over 130 ${\mu}g/m^3$ when wind velocity of northwester in winter is over 11 m/s (Air Quality for Particulate Matter (100 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for 24 hours)). Also, the measured error between AERMOD and actual measurement is lower than 5%.
In this study the explosion characteristics of terephtalic acid dust(PTA) was investigated with the Hartmann type apparatus. The minimum ignition energy, minimum explosible concentration, flame propagation velocity, explosion pressure, explosion pressure rise rate and the effect of inert dust(talcum) on explosion characteristics were measured. Flame velocity was 50m/s at 700g/m$^3$ concentration, and the explosion pressure and explosion pressure rise rate were most likely with that of gas explosion. It was found that an inert dust acts as a heat sinker and it disturbs the combustion of flammable dust, as a result, explosion pressure and explosion pressure rise rate were decreased and minimum explosion concentration was increased with increasing the fraction of talcum dust in PTA.
Replacement period for vehicle cabin filter of most automobiles is fixed without consideration of conditions of filter and environment. Auto alarm system of replacement period at vehicle cabin filter and interception system of high concentration dust were developed. Control program which is related with the AQS has been developed based on the circuit drive algorithm. This system is expected to be beneficial to passenger's health and to extend the life of the filter which regulates vehicle HVAC system by ventilation mode change at the time of high concentration dust.
Simulation results of Asian Dust Aerosol Model (ADAM) for the period of April 7-9, 2006 were analyzed, comparing with observed PM10 data. ADAM simulated around ten times lower than on-site PM10 concentration in the source regions: Zhurihe, Tongliao, Yushe, Dalian and Huimin. As the result of this low concentration, transported amounts of Asian Dust were under-estimated as well. In order to quantify a forecasting accuracy, Bias and RMSE were calculated. Even though remarkably negative Biases and high RMSEs were observed, ADAM simulation had followed well up the time of dust outbreak and a transported path. However, the emission process to generate dust from source regions requires a great enhancement. The PM10 concentration at the surface reached up to $2,300{\mu}gm^{-3}$ at Baeknyoungdo and Seoul (Mt. Gwanak), up to $1,750{\mu}gm^{-3}$ at KGAWO about 18:00 LST in April 8, respectively; however, ADAM did not simulate the same result on its second peak. It is considered that traveling Asian dust might have been lagged over the Korean peninsula by the blocking of surface high pressure. Moreover, the current RDAPS's 30 km grid resolution (which ADAM adopts as the meteorological input data) might not adequately represent small-scale atmospheric motions below planetary boundary layer.
