In this paper, we develop a dust detection sensor system capable of identifying types of dust for an improvement of a robot vacuum cleaner. The dust detection sensor system is composed of a set of infra-red sensors: a single transmitter and multiple receivers. Given the fixed amount of light transmitted from the transmitter, the amount of light coming in multiple receiver sensors varies, depending on the type and density of dust that is passing between the transmitter and the receivers. Therefore, the type of dust can be identified by means of observing the change of the amount of light from the receiver sensors. For experiments, we use two types of dust, rice and sesame, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this study, in order to find new uses for CBS dust, the chemical components of CBS dust were analyzed and effectively proposed a method. Chemical analysis shows that CBS dust contains a large amount of alkali in addition to chloride therefore, if CBS dust is used for secondary concrete products that use high amounts of mixed materials without rebars, it will be found that it can be used effectively for enhancing strength by active alkali.

This study is about comparison of tangental entry type cyclone dust collector with axial vane type cyclone dust collector. Cut diameter and dust collection efficiency of both collector was compared by theory and experiment. Cut diameter was calculated by an quasi-empirical formula by Lapple and Shepherd. Measurement of cut diameter was conducted by particle counter through dust generator. As the result, cut diameter obtained by experiment was a little larger than that by theory. But the error is within $0.5{\mu}m$ in both type of collector, so it could be confirmed that theoretical value and experimental value were almost identical. And, as flow rate increased, dust collection efficiency was increased. Also axial vane type showed higher dust collection efficiency than tangental entry type. Therefore, it can be said that axial vane type cyclone dust collector has higher performance than the other.
Recently, as the amount of fine dust has risen rapidly, our interest is increasing day by day. It is virtually impossible to remove fine dust. However, it is best to predict the concentration of fine dust and minimize exposure to it. In this study, we developed a mathematical model that can predict the concentration of fine dust using various information related to the weather and air quality, which is provided in real time in 'Air Korea (http://www.airkorea.or.kr/)' and 'Weather Data Open Portal (https://data.kma.go.kr/).' In the mathematical model, various domestic seasonal variables and atmospheric state variables are extracted by multiple regression analysis. The parameters that have significant influence on the fine dust concentration are extracted, and using ANN (Artificial Neural Network) and SVM (Support Vector Machine), which are machine learning techniques, we proposed a prediction model. The proposed model can verify its effectiveness by using past dust and weather big data.

A scattering dust collector in automobile brake pads was investigated in this study. The dust scattering was measured by mounting a booth with a particle counter for both the vehicle-induced wind and brake caliper locations. In addition, the collection effect of the dust scattering was analyzed using the designed dust collector. The results of this study can be used to develop an advanced dust collector and the field test modes for dust scattering in an automotive brake system.
Radioactivity concentrations for natural radionuclides were determined from fine dust samples collected in Jeju, Korea according to atmospheric events (Asian dust, haze, fog-mist, and non-event), and radium equivalent activity was calculated. The mean atmospheric radioactivity concentrations for 238U, 232Th, and 40K in 127 fine dust samples were 0.49, 0.24, and 7.23 µBq m-3, respectively, and the radium equivalent activity was 33.25 Bq kg-1. The mean concentrations of 238U and 232Th in the fine dust during the Asian dust period were 1.31 and 1.60 µBq m-3, respectively, above the global average, while the values for the other three atmospheric events were lower. The ratio of 232Th/238U radioactivity during the Asian dust period was 1.22, higher than the ratio for the other three atmospheric events.
The use of low-grade coal is continuously increasing with the development of combustion technology and cost reduction for coal used in thermal power plants . During combustion, the latent heat of evaporation due to moisture is large, and there is a risk of spontaneous combustion and dust explosion during the process of storing and pulverizing coal. This study compared and evaluated the minimum explosive concentration and explosive strength of four types of coal dust-fine, coal dust-coarse, wood pallet+organic dust, and wood chip with coal powder collected from domestic power plant D. The minimum explosive concentration of coal dust was measured according to JIS Z 8818:2002, and the explosion strength was tested according to ASTM E1226 using a Siwek 20 L Chamber Apparatus. As a result of the minimum explosive concentration test, it was found that coal dust-fine has a risk of dust explosion, and since an explosion occurs at a dust concentration of 130 g/m3 of wood chips, it was found that there is a risk of explosion at the lowest dust concentration. According to the dust explosion class standard, Kst is less than 200 bar m/s, and all samples fall under the explosion class St 1, and the dust has a low risk of explosion.

The variation of the physicochemical properties of atmospheric aerosols in coexistence of the heavy Asian Dust and Haze observed from $15^{th}$ to $17^{th}$ March 2009 in Seoul was scrutinized through the mass and ion concentration observations and synoptic weather analysis. Although the ratio of PM1.0/PM10 was constant at 0.3 (which is typical during Asian Dust period in Korea) during the measurement period, both PM10 and PM1.0 mass concentrations were 3~6 times and 2~4 times higher than that of clear days, respectively. Water-soluble ion components accounted for 30~50% of PM10 and 50~70% of PM1.0 mass concentration. One of the secondary pollutants, $NO_3^-$ was found to be associated with $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ in coarse mode indicating that the aerosol derived from natural source was affected by anthropogenic pollutants. While the acidity of the aerosols increased in fine mode when the stagnation of weather patterns was the strongest (March $16^{th}$), the alkalinity increased in coarse mode when new air masses arrived with a southwestern wind after ending a period of stagnation (March $17^{th}$). In the selected case, SOR (Sulfur Oxidation Ratio, $nSO_4^{2-}/[nSO_4^{2-}+nSO_2]$) and NOR (Nitrogen Oxidation Ratio, $nNO_3^-/[nNO_3^-+nNO_2]$) values of ion components were higher than the general values during Asian Dust period. These results imply that dust aerosols could be mixed with pollutants transported from China even in heavy Asian Dust cases in Korea.
This study was undertaken to compare the performance of three dust samplers for collecting cotton dust fibers. For this study, three dust samplers including Vertical Elutriator (VE), Total Dust Method (TDM) using 37 mm cassette, and the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) sampler were selected. A total of 6 cotton mills and 4 towel factories were investigated. When measured by VE, the GM for cotton dust was 0.19 $mg/m^3$ which was less than the current occupational exposure limit (OEL) 0.2 $mg/m^3$. But when measured by TDM and IOM at the same locations, the GMs were 0.37 and 0.63 $mg/m^3$, respectively. In Korea, most industrial hygienists have used the TDM for cotton dust measurements and the results were compared with either the TLV for cotton dust or the PNOC (particulates not otherwise classified) of 10 $mg/m^3$ for making decisions. The results of this study clearly showed that past cotton dust measurements and decisions made with such results were not correct. It needs to be noticed the related contents by using VE if it applies to the exposure limit, 0.2 $mg/m^3$, and needs to be revised the exposure limit by IOM. Also, if TDM is used, it requires to be studied and suggested to the new OEL.
Sand and dust storm in East Asia, so called Asian dust, is a seasonal meteorological phenomenon. Mostly in spring, dust particles blown into atmosphere in the arid area over northern China desert and Manchuria are transported to East Asia by prevailing flows. An Asian dust event occurred on 6-8 May 2007 is chosen to investigate how sensitive the Asian dust transport forecast to the initial condition uncertainties and to interpret the characteristics of sensitivity structures from the viewpoint of dynamics and predictability. To investigate the forecast sensitivities to the initial condition, adjoint sensitivities that calculate gradient of the forecast aspect (i.e., response function) with respect to the initial condition are used. The forecast aspects relevant to Asian dust transports are dry energy forecast error and lower tropospheric pressure forecast error. The results show that the sensitive regions for the dry energy forecast error and the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error are initially located in the vicinity of the trough and then propagate eastward as the surface low system moves eastward. The vertical structures of the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error are upshear tilted structures, which are typical adjoint sensitivity structures for extratropical cyclones. Energy distribution of singular vectors also show very similar structures with the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error. The adjoint sensitivities of the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error with respect to the relative vorticity show that the accurate forecast of the trough (or relative vorticity) location and intensity is essential to have better forecasts of the Asian dust event. Forecast error for the atmospheric circulation during the dust event is reduced 62.8% by extracting properly weighted adjoint sensitivity perturbations from the initial state. Linearity assumption holds generally well for this case. Dynamics of the Asian dust transport is closely associated with predictability of it, and the improvement in the overall forecast by the adjoint sensitivity perturbations implies that adjoint sensitivities would be beneficial in improving the forecast of Asian dust events.
