  • In a reciprocating compressor, the piston and connecting rod are important parts. Excess mechanical stress on these parts may cause damage, and broken parts are expensive and difficult to replace. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical stress affecting durability and longevity. The main purpose of this study was to identify locations of maximum stress on pistons and connecting rods. Based on dynamic calculation of the working process of a specific air compressor, an analysis of piston and connecting rod performance has been completed. A three-dimensional model for the air compressor's pistons and connecting rods was built separately, and FEM analysis of these components was carried out using a numerical method. The pistons were loaded by pressure which was changed according to crankshaft angle without thermal boundary conditions. The simulation results were used to predict and estimate stress concentration as well as the value of this stress on pistons and connecting rods. The maximum equivalent stress calculated are over 190 MPa on pistons and 123 MPa on connecting rods at crank angle $135^{\circ}$ and $225^{\circ}$ but these are under tensile yield strength. Besides, the calculated safety factors of connecting rods and pistons is higher than 1. Moreover, the results obtained can be used to provide manufacturers with references to optimize the design of pistons and connecting rods for reciprocating compressors.

  • Corrosion products of reinforcement in concrete induce pressure to the adjacent concrete due to the expansion of steel. This expansion causes tensile stresses around the reinforcing bar and eventually induces cracking through the concrete cover The cracking of concrete cover will adversely affect the safety as well as the service life of concrete structures. The purpose of the this study is to examine the critical corrosion amount which causes the cracking of concrete cover. To this end, a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study has been conducted. Major test variables include concrete strength and cover thickness. The strains at the surface of concrete cover have been measured according to the amount of steel corrosion. The corrosion products which penetrate into the pores and cracks around the steel bar have been considered in the calculation of expansive pressure due to steel corrosion. The present study indicates that the critical amount of corrosion, which causes the initiation of cracking, increases with an increase of compressive strength. A realistic relation between the expansive pressure and average strain of corrosion product layer in the corrosion region has been derived and the representative stiffness of corrosion layer was determined. A concept of pressure-free strain of corrosion product layer was introduced to explain the relation between the expansive pressure and corrosion strain. The proposed theory agrees well with experimental data and may be a good base for the realistic durability design of concrete structures.

  • Recent construction activity of infrastructures has been booming and accelerating to incur shortage of river sand for concrete works. Thus, sea sand has been excessively used instead of river sa.nd, that directly causes to decrease the quality and the durability of concrete, and then might lead to the collapse of concrete structures. The purpose of this experimental research is not only to develop high-strength concrete using sea sand, but also to investigate mechanical properties of high-strength concrete, such as elastic moduli, compressive strength and etc, which could be used for important design data of concrete structures. Rational analytic formula for elastic moduli have been proposed together with those for the splitting tensile strength and the flexural strength, which are to be predicted from compressive strength of concrete cylinder. Optimum water-cement and water-binder ratio have been experimentally obtained so as to develop high compressive strength with and without using silica fume as a admixture for concrete. It is noted that experimental elastic moduli for high strength concrete above aCk=330kgf /cm2 are less than those by the Code. Appropriate amount of concrete mixture has been experimentally investigated so as to develop maximum compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength.

  • In recent years, the availability of high-strength reinforcing and prestressing steels leads us to build economically and efficiently designed concrete structural members. One of critical problems faced to the structural engineers dealing with these types of structural member is controls of crack width that is used as a criterion for the serviceability in the limit state design. Especially, flexural cracking must be controlled to secure the structural safety and to improve the durability as well as serviceability of the load carving members. The proposed method utilizes the results of pure tension test in which tensile loads are applied both side of specimen, done by Ikki. The bond characteristics of deformed reinforcing bar under pure tension is considered by the area of concrete and rib area. The results of proposed method are compared with the test data and the results show that the proposed method can take into account the dimensions, variation of sectional properties, and direction of reinforcing and gives more accurate maximum bond stress and corresponding relative slip than the existing methods. the characteristics of bonding is considered by using dimensionless slip magnitude and effective reinforcement ratio. The validity of the proposed equation is verified by test experimental data.

  • This study, compared with data of PbO-base glass system is a part of new glass composition design with Bi-base composition for PDP Rib. As $Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3-ZnO$ glass composition including Bi, which have similar density value and work facility to PbO, properties of softening point, thermal expansion coefficient, chemical durability, dielectric constant, and structural changing by XPS were investigated. $Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3-ZnO$ glass system, added 50∼80 wt% $Bi_2O_3$ widely, were presented 400∼480$^{\circ}C$ softening temperature, $68{\sim}72{\times}10^{-7}/^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient and 13∼25 dielectric constant. These results were showed similar physical properties with Pb-base glass system of same composition content, application possibility as starting composition of rib material was identified through micro-control of components and physical properties. The bonding energy of $O_{1s}$ as the $Bi_2O_3$ content decreasing was increased and full width at half-maximum (FWHM) was decreased, which is caused by non-bridging oxygen increasing.

  • Recently, the researches on the durability design of concrete structures have been studied. As the examples, models to evaluate the service life prediction of the structure have been developed. The purpose of this article is to develop the model for predicting remaining service life. The final aim is to provide the user time for repairing the concrete structures. In addition, it makes possible to maintain the concrete structure economically. 70 reservoirs out of the inland concrete structures were selected and concrete structures of their components were surveyed. Two methods were used for measuring carbonation; TG/DTA method and Phenolphtalein indicator and, the value of pH was measured by the pH meter, After deriving correlations of calcium carbonate and used year, duration from completion year to 2002, pH value, and concrete cover depth the model was developed for predicting remaining service life by measuring data as small as possible. The conventional models had been developed on the basis of experiment data obtained from the restricted lab environment like as carbon gas exposure. On the other hand this model was developed on the basis of measuring data obtained from the real field that the complex deterioration actions are occurred such as freezing and thawing, carbonation, steel corrosion, and so on. The reliability of the developed model will be evaluated high in this point and this model can help to maintain concrete structures economically by providing the manager time to repair the deteriorated concrete structures in site of facility management.

  • Silica fume is generally adopted as admixture for Ultra High Strength Concrete (UHSC) owing to its remarkable contribution to the strength and durability but increases significantly the fabrication cost of UHSC. Accordingly, this study investigates the replacement of silica fume by blast furnace slag (BS) and fly ash (FA) in order to lower the fabrication cost of 80MPa-UHSC. To that goal, experiment is conducted on the mix proportions of mortar in terms of its binder combination, water-to-binder ratio (W/B) and unit binder content. Based on the experimental data, a mix design of concrete is derived and its properties are verified. The results reveal that a W/B of 21% and unit binder content of $720kg/m^3$ are appropriate to achieve 80MPa-UHSC using a binder composed of 60% of OPC, 30% of BS and 10% of FA. The properties of the corresponding UHSC are seen to be satisfactory with a slump flow of 715mm and compressive strength of 97MPa at 28days. The application of the binder combination derived in this study is analyzed to reduce the cost by 50% of binder compared to the mix using silica fume while realizing equivalent performance.

  • This paper is to determine the possibility of re-using waste concrete from Incheon city area. The strength test was conducted with five aggregate compounds which was replaced a natural aggregate with recycled aggregate. After checking the physical characteristics of recycled aggregate compounds, the mix design of recycled concrete was conducted. For the relatively comparison between natural and recycled compounds, while the unit aggregate weight was changed, other conditions were fixed. The freezing and thawing test which included fly-ash and super-plastezer were performed to check the durability and workability when recycling waste concrete. In the physical characteristics of recycled aggregate, it was found that the specific gravity of recycled coarse aggregate and recycled fine aggregate satisfied the first grade of recycle specification(KS), and all compounds of recycled aggregate also satisfied the second grade of absorption specification, Especially up to the 50% substitution of recycled aggregate is equal to or a bit lower than that of convention aggregate. In comparison with conventional concrete, the recycled concrete is lower than maximum by 7% in compressive strength decreasing rate after freezing-thawing test. From now, although most of recycled concrete was used to the building lot, subgrade, asphalt admixture, through the result. It was proved that possibility of re-using recycled aggregate as the substructure of bridge, retaining wall, tunnel lining and concrete structure which is not attacked the drying shrinkage severely.

  • Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of pelleted and expanded sorghum-based feeds prepared with different moisture levels and particle size of ingredients on metabolizable energy, ileal digestibility of amino acids and broiler performance. Methods: The experiment was performed with 720 male broiler chicks of the Cobb strain, with treatments of six replications, with 15 birds each; they were arranged in a completely randomized design and $2{\times}2{\times}2$ factorial scheme (pelleted or expanded feed processing, 0.8% or 1.6% moisture addition in the mixer, and particle size of 650 or 850 microns). Results: Higher pellet quality (pellets, % and pellet durability index [PDI]) was obtained in expanded diets and inclusion of 1.6% moisture. The particle size of 850 microns increased the PDI of final diet. All studied treatments had no significant effect on weight gain and broiler carcass and cut yields. Lower feed conversion occurred for birds fed pelleted feed at 42 d. The highest apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (AMEn) values of feed in the initial rearing phase (10 to 13 days) were observed in birds fed pelleted feed or for feed prepared with 1.6% moisture. The highest ileal digestibility coefficients of amino acids were obtained with the consumption of pelleted feed prepared with a particle size of 650 microns and 1.6% moisture. Conclusion: Pelleted feed prepared with a milling particle size of 650 microns and 1.6% moisture provided increased ileal digestibility of amino acids and AMEn in the starter period. However, the expanded feed improved pellet quality and feed conversion of broilers at 42 days of age. We conclude that factors such as moisture, particle size and processing affect the pellet quality, and therefore should be considered when attempting to optimize broiler performance.

  • FRP-concrete composite deck, an innovative system, is composed of concrete in the top and FRP panel in the bottom. Bottom FRP panel can reduce self weight and improve workability. This system requires strong connection between FRP and concrete. Therefore coarse sand coating was previously applied on FRP to improve the bonding. In this study, concrete wedge method is newly introduced to enhance both vertical bond and fatigue performance. Three FRP-concrete composite deck specimens with the concrete wedges were manufactured, and static and fatigue tests were carried out. The results showed that the new FRP-concrete composite deck satisfied deflection and crack width limits set by the design codes. And the fatigue test showed that the composite deck was capable of two million load cycles under 50% of its static strength. Based on the results, it can be concluded that that this new system has outstanding mechanical and durability performance, and therefore, satisfactorily be used in designing FRP-concrete composite deck.
