  • In order to study wearable air cushion materials capable of responding to massive impact in high-altitude fall situation, high tenacity woven fabrics were bonded by heat only depending on various type of thermoplastic films and then mechanical properties were measured. Tensile strength, elongation, and 100% modulus measurement results for 4 types of films show that TPU-2 has higher impact resistance and easier expansion than PET-1. After thermal bonding, the combination with the highest tensile strength was a material with a TPU-2 film for nylon and a PET-2 film for PET, so there was a difference by type of fabric. The tear strength of the bonded materials were increased compared to the fabric alone, which shows that durability against damage such as tearing can be obtained through film adhesion. All of the peel strengths exceeded the values required by automobile airbags by about 5 times, and the TPU-2 bonded fabric showed the highest value. The air permeability was 0 L/dm2 /min. For both the film and the bonded material, which means tightness between the fabric and the film through thermal bonding. It is expected to be applied as a wearable air cushion material by achieving a level of mechanical properties similar to or superior to that of automobile airbags through the method of bonding film and fabric by thermal bonding.

  • Micron size Co-alloy(T800) powder was coated on Inconel 718 by HVOF thermal spraying for the studies of the improvement of durability of high speed spindle by using Taguchi program for the parameters of spray distance, flow rates of hydrogen and oxygen and powder feed rate. The optimal coating process was determined by the studies of coating properties such as micro-structure, porosity, surface roughness and micro hardness. Friction and wear behaviors of coatings were investigated by sliding wear test at room temperature and $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. At both room temperature and $538^{\circ}C$ the sliding wear debris and friction coefficients of the coating were drastically reduced compared with the surface of non-coated parent material. This shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement surface coating of high speed air-bearing spindle. At high temperature wear traces and friction coefficients of both coating and non-coating were drastically reduced compared with those of room temperature since the brittle oxides were formed easily on the surface, and the brittle oxide phases were attrited by the reciprocating sliding wear according to the complicated mixed wear mechanisms These oxide particles, partially melts and the melts play role as lubricant and reduce the wear and friction coefficient. This also shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable far the durability improvement surface coating on the surface vulnerable to frictional heat such as high speed spindles.

  • Pressable ceramics have many applications in the field of dental industry because of their excellent esthetic, compressive strength, chemical durability. Despite these attractive characteristics, they have not been widely used since they are very brittle and extremly sensitive to porcelain. In this study, the fabrication of pressable dental porcelain ($SiO_2-Al_2O_3-K_2O-Na_2O$) as a function of contents of $Al_2O_3,\;BaO\;and\;ZrO_2$ were investigated. And then compressive strength, Vickers hardness, density and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) tests have been carried out to evaluate properties of pressable dental porcelain fabricated. The property of pressable dental porcelain fabricated by adding of 15%$Al_2O_3$ and 2%BaO contents was closely approximated to that of natural tooth.

  • Recently, concrete structures have become larger and higher and are demanding high performance concrete with lower heat to prevent thermal cracking, far greater workability, high strength and durability, Application of low heat portland(Type IV) cement for the high performance concrete is the best solution to satisfied those requirements. Here are explained the effect on the properties of high flowing concrete using low heat portland cement by material and mixing variations. Variables for sensitivity test were selected items like finess modulus of aggregates, particle size of limestone powder, unit water, superplasticizer, viscosity agent and concrete temperature. The results of this study were be applied to slurry wall of #215 and #216 of underground LNG tank in Inchon.

  • Wood Plastic Composite(WPC) has been introduced as a new constructional material in Europe and North America. The maintenance-free durability against weather was accepted by customers and the environment-friendly merits ignited the abrupt increase of market size. Domestic major companies have kicked off the WPC business at the market of outdoor constructional materials. Due to the high contents of natural wood fiber, the production equipments should be modified to remove the moisture, to prevent thermal degradation and to promote output rates. Materials including functional fillers play a critical role in rheological properties, which affects the physical and mechanical properties of the last products. More research might be performed for synergy effects combined by various academic fields from mechanical and chemical engineering to polymer process and material science.

  • Calcium hydroxide produced by cement hydration decreases the durability and the compressive strength of cement mortars. Pozzolanic property of meta kaolin and silica fume allows to avoid this drawback. Calcium hydroxide consumption according to pozzolanic raction is evaluated by Fourier differential thermal analysis. Particulary the properties of high performance and high strength of cement mortar containing above 10% meta kaolin and silica fume were resulted in the pozzolanic activity.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerators and piezoelectric nanogenerators are a spotlighted energy harvesting method that converts the wasted mechanical energy from the environment into usable electrical energy. In the case of triboelectric nanogenerators, researches have been mainly focused on high permittivity and flexible polymer materials, and in the case of piezoelectric nanogenerators, researches have been focused on ceramic materials exhibiting high polarization characteristics. Recently, many researches have been conducted to improve durability and power in various environments by using composite materials which have flexible properties of polymer, high permittivity, thermal resistance and high polarization properties of ceramics. This article reviews the energy harvesting studies reported about composites materials using ceramics and polymers.

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been used as a general-purpose polymer because of its lower cost, good durability and mechanical properties compared to other materials. However, PVC is vulnerable to heat deformation and generates a toxic gas like hydrogen chloride. Therefore, it is important to delay or prevent the flame retardancy and thermal degradation of the PVC during the processing. It was reported that aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) improved flame retardancy as well as smoke inhibition of the virgin polymer. In this study, PVC composites by addition of ATH were compounded in a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The PVC composites with different concentrations of ATH (0~5 phr) were analyzed. Flame retardancy of the PVC composite significantly increased depending on the ATH concentration. LOI of the composite also increased with the concentration of ATH. There were no significant differences for the thermal properties of the PVC composites with ATH.

  • In the existed study, a fire outbreak in a reinforced concrete structure looses the organism by the different contraction and expansion of hardened cement pastes and aggregate, and causes cracks by thermal stress, leading to the deterioration of the durability. So accurate diagnosis of deterioration is needed based on mechanism of fire deterioration in general concrete structures. Fundamental information and data on the properties of concrete exposed to high temperature are necessary for accurate diagnosis of deterioration. Therefore, this study is willing to propose fundamental data for quick and accurate diagnosis of deteriorated concrete structure by fire damage with experiment according to the design compressive strength.
