Dumbbell-shaped spinal extradural cavernous hemangioma is rare. The differential diagnosis of dumbbell-shaped spinal tumors based on magnetic resonance imaging includes schwannoma and lymphoma. Here, we report a dumbbell-shaped spinal extradural cavernous hemangioma with intrathoracic growth on T2-3 in a 64-year-old man complaining of right side infrascapular area back pain with no neurologic deficit. The cavernous hemangioma was resected through combined video-assisted thoracoscopy and laminectomy without a fusion procedure. The patient had tolerable operative wound pain with no neurologic deficit after surgery. Based on magnetic resonance imaging findings and a review of the literature, we discuss cavernous hemangioma among the differential diagnosis of paravertebral dumbbell-shaped spinal tumors and the importance of complete resection.
Dumbbell neurogenic tumor is a rare disease, arising about 10 % of mediastinal neurogenic tumor. We report a 31 year old man who was suffered from paresthesia and weakness of lower extremities for about 8 months. Chest x-rays revealed a dumbbell shaped mass shadow in left lower posterior mediastinum. MRI demonstrated a well defined dumbbell shaped mass in the mediastinum of T7 level, including spinal cord compression by the extended tumor into the spinal canal and enlarged intervertebral foramen. The patient underwent one-stage combined resection of the tumor through the thoracotomy and laminectomy, simultaneously. The tumor was confirmed as neurilemmoma. The postoperative course was smooth and uneventful.
Approximately 9.8% of neurogenic tumors of the mediastinum extend into the spinal column so that the composite neoplastic mass was dumbbell shaped. We experienced three patients confirmed by Dumbbell shaped mediastinal tumor radiologically and tried surgical resection by posterolateral thoracotomy only corpectomy and costotransversectomy was performed simultaneously in three patients and interbody fusion in two. In one patient the diagnosis was liposarcoma and in 1 neuroblastoma and in 1 neurilemmoma. then followed by radiation theraphy in case I and radiation and chemotheraphy in case II. All three cases showed satisfactory results clinically and radiographically.

This paper presents an equivalent circuit model for a dumbbell-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) in a microstrip line. The effects of equivalent circuit elements of a dumbbell-shaped DGS and their magnetic coupling to the host transmission line are modeled as a simple lumped-element circuit. In addition, simple approximate expressions to determine the main circuit parameters for this model are presented. The transfer characteristic calculated by the proposed circuit model is compared with the results of EM simulation and measurement.

The split ground structure for microstrip structure can be used to protect analog/RF signal from SSN interference of digital circuits on PCB with common ground. However, the split ground structure gives rise to undesired emissions that may interfere with nearby circuitry due to the ground discontinuity. In this paper, we have proposed the modified structure, Dumbbell shaped SGS and the method to reduce the radiation by adding the lumped resistor on the proposed Dumbbell shaped SGS.
Dumbbell-shaped aromatic amphiphilic molecules consisting of a dodeca-p-phenylene as a rigid segment and oligoether dendrons as a flexible chains were synthesized, characterized, and their aggregation behavior was investigated in the bulk and at the air-water interface. In contrast to the molecule 2 which shows a nematic liquid crystalline state, molecule 1 based on shorter dendritic chains was observed to self-assemble into a 3-D primitive orthorhombic supercrystal. And molecule 1 at the air-water interface was observed to reorganize from circular plates to ring structures by lateral compressions.
Neurogenic tumors of the mediastinum may have an intraspinal component connected by a narrowed segment of tumor in the intervertebral foramen, hence the descriptive term dumbbell.Recently we had an occasion to remove a dumbbell neurilemmoma in a 62 years old woman using an approach designed to allow wide posterolateral thoracotomy and concomitant laminectomy for a single stage removal of the entire tumor. The mass in the posterior mediastinum was discovered on routine chest roentgenography. CT scan demonstrated a dumbbell shaped soft tissue mass density compressing spinal canal but preserving spinal cord. There were no neurologic signs. A standard posterolateral thoracotomy incision was made to remove tumor mass and then T5 unilateral laminectomy has done by Neurosurgeon. 7 x 7 cm sized extrapleural neurilemmoma was round, cystic, soft mass which covered parietal pleural with invaded regional vertebrae. There was no postoperative neurological complication.
The walls of guard cells have many specialized features. Guard cells are present in the leaves of bryophytes, ferns, and almost all vascular plants. However, they exhibit considerable morphological diversities. There are two types of guard cells: the first type is found in a few monocots, such as palms and corn, and the other is found in most dicots, many monocots, mosses, ferns, and gymnosperms. In corns, guard cells have a characteristic dumbbell shape with bulbous ends. Most dicot and monocot species have kidney-shaped guard cells that have an elliptical contour with a pore at its center. Although subsidiary cells are common in species with kidney-shaped stomata, they are almost always absent in most of the other plants. In this study, there were many different stomatal features that were associated with kidney-shaped guard cells, but not dumbbell shaped guard cells, which are present in most grasses, such as cereals. Each plant investigated exhibited different characteristic features and most of these plants had kidney-shaped guard cells. However, the guard cells of Chamaesyce supina Mold, were often more rectangular than kidney-shaped. In contrast, Sedum sarmentosum guard cells were of the sink ensiform type and in Trifolium repens, the guard cells exhibited a more rhombic shape. Therefore, kidney-shaped guard cells could be divided into a number of subtypes that need to be investigated further.
In order to protect the turbine blade from working fluid of high temperature, many cooling techniques such as internal convection cooling, film cooling, impinging jet cooling and thermal barrier coating have been developed. With all other things, film-cooling has been widely used as the important alternative. In the present work, numerical analysis has been performed to investigate and to compare the film-cooling performance of various film-cooling hole schemes such as cylindrical, crescent, louver, and dumbbell holes. To analyze the turbulent flow and the film-cooling mechanism, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis has been performed with shear stress transport turbulence model. The validation of numerical results has been assessed in comparison with experimental data. The characteristics of fluid flow and the film-cooling performance for each shaped hole have been investigated and evaluated in terms of centerline, laterally averaged and spatially averaged film-cooling effectivenesses. Among the film cooling holes, the dumbbell shaped hole shows better film-cooling effectiveness than the other shaped holes. And the louver and cylindrical shaped hole show the worst film cooling performance, and concentrated flows on near the centerline only.
