  • Fracture behaviors of polycarbonate (PC)/polyestrercarbonate (PEC) blends and their miscibility have been examined to find out the mechanism of ductilie-brittle transition of fracture behavior which would be a main governing factor on the thickness sensitivity of impact strength of PC. $T_g$ measurement showed that PEC with a carbonate content higher than 30 mol% was miscible with PC. In the notched Izod impact test of PC, ductile-brittle transition occurred in the range of 4 to 5 mm thickness. The impact strength of miscible PC/PEC5 blends ductile-fractured in the thin specimens decreased with increasing PEC5 content, which was in accordance with the decrease of elongation at break in tensile test. In the brittle fracture of the thick specimens, the impact strength was well correlated with the plastic zone size in the vicinity of the notch tip.

  • High-nitrogen Fe-18Mn-18Cr-N austenitic steels with higher yield strength have been recently developed and used for generator retaining rings because they have non-magnetic, high strength, high ductility, and good corrosion resistance. In the present study, a high-nitrogen Fe-18Mn-18Cr-0.61N austenitic steel was fabricated and then tensile and Charpy impact tests were conducted on them in order to investigate the effect of cold working on the mechanical properties. Although the yield and tensile strengths usually increased with cold working, the ductility and impact toughness significantly decreased after cold working. On the other hand, the high-nitrogen austenitic steel exhibited a ductile-brittle transition due to unusual brittle fracture at low temperatures despite having a face-centered cubic structure. The ductile-brittle transition temperature obtained from Charpy impact tests could be remarkably increased by $60^{\circ}C$ after 20% cold working because of the enhanced cleavage-like brittle fracture.

  • Fracture toughness JIC and KIC tests were performed on A516 Gr70 carbon steel plate at the temperature ranging from -$160^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$, and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813 and ASTM E 399. Unloading compliance J-integral tests were performed on 1TCT specimens. The relation between the $J_{IC}$ value and the test temperature was obtained. It was concluded that the temperature ranging from $-15^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ is the upper shelf region of ductile-brittle transition temperature, and in this temperature range, fracture toughness $J_{IC}$ values decreased with increasing temperature. The ductile brittle transition temperature of the material may be around $-30^{\circ}C$. In the region near $-30^{\circ}C$, the tendency of $J_{IC}$ to decrease with decreasing temperature was significant.

  • In spite of frequent defect in industrial boilers, life assessment or diagnostic method for them has not been actively studied. In this research, SS400 carbon steel used in industrial boilers is simulated with artificial aging heat treatment. To do qualitative life assessment, differences in micro-structures and hardness of SS400 by the degradation time are studied. In addition, variation in material properties by aging was observed with the tensile test at room temperature and $179^{\circ}C$ and changes in ductile to brittle transition temperature was observed with the charpy impact test performed at several test temperature.

  • In general, lithography techniques are applied when machining single-crystal silicon in nanoscale applications; however, these techniques involve low degrees of freedom for the vertical shapes. By applying mechanical techniques to machine silicon, nanopatterns having various types of vertical shapes can be manufactured. In this study, we determined the ductile-brittle machining transition point and analyzed the- variation of the specific cutting resistance within the ductile machining region in nanoscale applications. When brittle fracture occurred during the nanoscale cutting, the depth of cut and cutting force increased and decreased rapidly, respectively. The first point of rapid increase in the depth of cut was defined as the ductile-brittle machining point. Subsequently, the shape of the machining tool was observed using a scanning electron microscope to calibrate the machining area, considering the tip blunting. The specific cutting resistance decreased continuously and converged to a certain value during the nanoscale cutting. The decrease and convergence in the value can be attributed to the decrease in the ratio of the arc length to the area of the machining tool and silicon.

  • The background of this study lies in he investigation of the formation mechanism of ductile mode(nkanometer-size) chips of brittle materials such as fine ceramics glass and silicon. As the first step to achieve this purpose this paper intends to observe the micro-deformation behavior of these materials in sub${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth indentation tests using a diamond indentor. In this study it was developed Ultra-Micro Indentation. Device using the PZT actuator. Experimentally by using the Ultra-Micro Indentation device the micro fracture behavior of the silicon wafer was investigated. It was possible that ductile-brittle transition point in ultimate surface of brittle material can be detected by adding an acoustic emission sensor system to the Ultra-Micro Indentation appartus.

  • Experimental studies of the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) for pre-cracked sapphire single crystals were carried out. The BDT temperature in sapphire single crystals were $1000\pm$$25^{\circ}C$ and 1100$\pm$$25^{\circ}C$ at constant strain rate 3.3$\times$$10^{-5}$/sec and 3.3$\times$$10^{-6}$/sec, respectively. With aid of the BDT model, the activation energy for prism plane slip {1120} <1100> dislocation velocity was in the range of 4.6$\pm$2.3eV This activation energy for dislocation velocity with BDT model was compatible with the result of the dislocation velocity (3.8eV) using the etch-pit techniques.

  • It was reported that the toughness for welded region was influenced by various factors such as the gradient for prior austenite grain size, the variation of microhardness and the characteristic microstructure depending on distance from the fusion boundary. Therefore, in order to evaluate the fracture strength of the weldment in which the microstructures change continuously, it is important to assess the peculiar strength of each microstructure in welded region. It was known that the small punch(SP) test technique which was originally developed to study the irradiation damage effect for the structures of nuclear power plant was also useful to investigate the strength evaluating of nonhomogeneous materials. In this paper, by means of a small punch test technique the possibility of evaluating strength of parent and welded region in SS41 and SM53B steels was investigated. The obtained results are summerized as follows: 1) The small punch test which showed markedly the ductile-brittle transition behavior in this experiment may be applied to evaluation for the fracture strength of welded region. 2) It was shown that the ductile-brittle regime lied in Region III(plastic membrane stretching region) of the flow characteristics observed in SP test. 3) The SP test technique which shows a more precipitous energy change transition behavior than the other test technique is able to estimate the more precise transition temperature. 4) It could be seen that in comparision with the structure of parent the structure of weld HAZ in SS41 steel was improved while it in SM53B steel was deteriorated.

  • Heavy flint optical glass(SF57HHT) is new material that has extremely high transmittance. Due to brittleness and high hardness, optical glass is one of the most difficult to materials for ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile machining, all materials, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo transition from brittle to ductile machining region below critical undefromed chip thickness. In this study, cutting test was carried out to evaluate cutting performance of heavy flint glass using ultra-precision machine with single crystal diamond bite. The machined workpiece surface topography, tool wear and surface roughness were examined using AFM and SEM. The experimental results indicate that the machining mode become the brittle mode to ductile mode, when the maximum undeformed chip thinkness is large than critical value. Tool wear mainly occurs on the flank face and its wear mechanism is dominated by abrasion. This study demonstrates the feasibility of SF57HHT by diamond turning.
