  • This paper intends to introduce the applicability of HydroQus to a problem of a tanker collision against a semi-submersible type floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT). HydroQus is a plug-in based on potential flow theory that generates interactive hydroforces in a commercial Finite element analysis (FEA) code Abaqus/Explicit. Frequency response analyses were conducted for a 10MW capacity FOWT to obtain hydrostatic and hydrodynamic constants. The tanker was modeled with rigid elements, while elastic-plastic elements were used for the FOWT. Mooring chains were modeled to implement station keeping ability of the FOWT. Two types of fracture models were considered: constant failure strain model and combined failure strain model HC-LN model composed of Hosford-Coulomb (HC) model & localized necking (LN) model. The damage extents were evaluated by hydroforces and failure strain models. The largest equivalent plastic strain observed in the cases where both restoring force and radiation force were considered. Stress triaxiality and damage indicator analysis showed that the application of HC-LN model was suitable. It could be stated that applications of suitable failure strain model and hydrodynamics into the collision simulations were of importance.

  • Structural integrity assessment of defected pipe is important in fitness for service evaluation and proper engineering assessment is needed to determine whether pipelines are still fit for service. This paper present a failure prediction of gas pipes made of APIl X65 steel with gouge using stress-modified true fracture strain, which is regarded as a criterion of ductile fracture. For this purpose, API X65 pipes with gouge are simulated using elastic-plastic FE analyses with the proposed ductile failure criterion and the resulting burst pressures are compared with experimental data. Agreements are quite good, which gives confidence in the use of the proposed criteria to defect assessment fer gas pipelines. Then, further extensive finite element analyses are performed to obtain the burst pressure solution of pipes with gouge as a function of defect depth, length and pipeline geometry.

  • This study proposed a seismic reinforcement of RC columns with non-seismic details, a fiber reinforcement method of aramid sheets and MLCP (high elasticity aromatic polyester fiber material) with different characteristics, and 4 full-size column specimens and conducted experiments. The results show that a non-seismic specimen (RC-Orig) rapidly lost its load-bearing capacity after reaching the maximum load, and shear failure occurred. The RC column reinforced with three types of aramid did not show an apparent increase in strength compared to the unreinforced specimen but showed a ductile behavior supporting the load while receiving a lateral displacement at least 1.57 to 1.95 times higher than the unreinforced specimen. The fracture mode of the specimen, according to the application of lateral load, also changed from shear to ductile fracture through aramid-based reinforcement. In addition, when examining the energy dissipation ability of the reinforced specimens, a ductile behavior dissipating seismic energy performed 4 times greater and more stably than the existing specimens.

  • In reinforced concrete structure, it is very important to secure ductile performance of column because the columns become brittle failure and cause the collapse of an entire structure and the damage of human life. This study is intending to seek the quantity of transverse steels in square reinforced concrete columns which is derived from moment-curvature analysis of cross section about various arrangements of transverse steel and the ratio of axial force and to propose the design method to secure the sufficient ductile behavior subjected to complex loading.

  • Recently, structure performance is maximized by using high strength concrete. In design of structure, concrete need combination with reinforcement, but use of common strength reinforcement make member complex bar placement, so high strength concrete members require increased strength reinforcement. If common strength reinforcement replaced by equal tension area of high strength reinforcement, reinforcement ratio increase and brittle failure of member may occur by material change. So, adequate upper limit of strength ratio is required to affirm ductile behavior in application of high strength reinforcement. In this study, ductility behavior was analysed by factor of reinforcement ratio, strength of concrete and reinforcement. The result indicate that ductile failure is shown under 0.35 $\rho_{b}$ in any reinforcement strength of same section and high strength concrete of 800kg/$cm^{2}$ used commonly is compatible with reinforcement of 5500kg/$cm^{2}$.

  • Knee Braced Frame (KBF) is a special form of ductile eccentrically braced frame having a diagonal brace connected to a knee element, as a hysteretic damper, instead of beam-column joint. This paper first presents an experimental investigation on cyclic performance of two knee braced single span one-story frame specimens. The general test arrangement, specimen details, and most relevant results (failure modes and hysteretic curves) are explained. Some indexes to assess the seismic performance of KBFs, including ductility; response reduction factor and energy dissipation capabilities are also subsequently discussed. Experimental results indicate that the maximum equivalent damping ratios achieved by test frames are 21.8 and 23% for the specimens, prior to failure. Finally, a simplified analytical model is derived to predict the bilinear behavior of the KBFs. Acceptable conformity between analytical and experimental results proves the accuracy of the proposed model.

  • Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses

  • Finite element analyses for bursting failure prediction in bulge forming under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding are carried out. By means of the FEM combined with Oyane's ductile fracture criterion based on Hills quadratic plastic potential, the forming limit and bursting pressure level are investigated for a seamed tube that comprises of weldment, heat affected zone(HAZ) and base material parts. Especially, in order to determine the material property of HAZ tensile tests for the base material and the weld metal are executed based on iso-strain approach. Finally, through a series of bulge forming simulations with consideration of the weldment and HAZ it is concluded that the proposed method would be able to predict the bursting pressure and fracture initiation site more realistically, so the approach can be extended to a wide range of practical bulge forming processes.

  • In this study, an easily recyclable separable glued-laminated timber (GLT)-steel beam was developed, and a structural design method was presented. The GLT and steel were mechanically composited using self-tapping screws. The GLT-steel beam was designed to fail in the compression of GLT. The bending moment and load-carrying capacity of the GLT-steel beam were predicted based on composite beam theory and compared with experimental test data. As a result, the GLT-steel beam exhibited ductile behavior, and compression failure of GLT was observed. The screw connection showed no damage while the steel plate was extended. The load-carrying capacity of GLT after failure was similar to the load resistance predicted by the compressive strength of GLT and the tensile strength of steel. This indicates that the ductile behavior of the GLT-steel beam can be safely designed by the tensile strength (yield) of steel.
