The effect of austempering treatment on mechanical properties of nodular indefinite chilled iron(NICI) and ductile cast iron(DCI) was investigated. In microstructural observation, matrix phase(pearlite and ferrite) was changed to ausferrite after austempering treatment both DCI and NICI. In case of NICI, decomposition of cementite($Fe_3C$) during austempering treatment was induced. After austempering treatment, mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and impact toughness was improved in NICI and DCI. The wear resistance is slightly decreased because of decomposition of cementite during austempering treatment in NICI but impact toughness and strength is dramatically increased.
Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. Also, it has been reported that, additional strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron can be obtainded from the proper combination of matrix structures by the heat treatment and addition of alloying elements. In this study the effect of special heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Ni, Mo) on the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures, strength and toughness of ductile cast iron were studied systematically. In water quenching from $770^{\circ}C$, the martensite volume(%) increased, but the ferrite volume(%) decreased with increment of Ni content. In as cast, pearlite volume(%) and hardness increased with increment of Mo and Ni contents. And with the increment of the destabilization austempering holding time, the bainite volume(%) increased but the martensite volume(%) decreased. As destabilization austempering holding time is same, bainite volume(%) decreased, martensite increased with the increment of Ni and Mo contents. The hardness and tensile strength decreased, but impact energy increased with the decrease of Ni and Mo contents, and increment of holding time of destabilization austempering treatment.
The study has been carried out under various experimental conditions to investigate mechanical properties by the transformation conditions of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron. The amount of retained austenite and bainite after quenching was determined by the X-ray diffractometer and the point counting method and which the microstructure was investigated by the S.E.M. The mechanical properties of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron can be varried over a comparatively wide range by changing the transformation conditions. During isothermal transformation of austenite in the bainite region, low-alloy ductile cast iron austempered at holding time of 40 minute has the maximum volume fraction(24%) of retained austenite in the cast iron matrix and which optimum values of mechanical properties correspond to the maximum amount of retained austenite, which falls with decreasing transformation temperature. The low values of both tensile strength and elongation in the initial stage of bainite transformation can be explained by premature fracture of tensile specimens and the tensile strength, hardness and elongation do not change considerably after a certain period. With a decreasing transformation temperature the tensile strength increase while the elongation decrease, especially the elongation has the maximum value at temperature $370^{\circ}C$.
Effects of high Si-P addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of thin ductile cast iron have been investigated. The amount of silicon addition have fixed on 4.0wt% and the amounts of phosphorus addition and thickness of specimen have been varied from 0.05 to 0.8wt% and ${\phi}13mm$, ${\phi}10mm$ and ${\phi}6mm$, respectively. As the casting thickness decreased, the average diameter of spheroidal graphite was decreased and the hardness of the cast iron increased. By adding P, the average diameter of spheroidal graphite was increased and the count of the spheroidal graphite was decreased continuously. And the tensile strength and the elongation was decreased, and the hardness was increased. With the P added more than 0.2wt%, the abraded amount was decreased significantly. The addition of P improved the wear resistance and the hardness of thin ductile cast iron.
Austempered ductile cast iron has been well known for their good toughness and strength. Generally these properties were improved by the various heat treatments and alloying elements. In this study, the effects of prior heat treatment history(near ferrite, near pearlite, near martensite) on the toughness and strength of the austempered ductile cast iron were studied experimentally and theoretically. All of the test specimens was austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and austempered at $300^{\circ}C$, $350^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$, respectively. The prior structure of near martensite in austempered ductile cast iron was not good in term of toughness and strength because the carbon content was apt to high in austenite during ausnitizing. It was found, on the other hand, that the ferrite matrix as prior structure had good combination of toughness and strenght. The best tensile strength and good toughness were obtained at $300^{\circ}C$, austemper in the prior structure of near ferrite, while $400^{\circ}C$ austemper in that of near pearlite and martensite.
In this study, based on the effect of the interaction of fracture mechanics by graphite and fatigue limit phenomena of the microscopic observation various matrix structure, spheroidal ratio, size of graphite and distribution etc. parameters containd with Ductile Cast Iron. Therefore, in this study, different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure and spheroidal ratio of graphite of 70%, 80% and 90%, GCD40, GCD45-1 and GCD45-2 series and three different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure, GCD 45-3, GCD 50, GCD 60 series, all of which contain more than 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite, were used to obtain the correlation between mean size of spheroidal graphite and fatigue strength. (1) 73% pearlite structure had the highest fatigue limitation while 36% pearlite structure had the lowest fatigue limitation among ferrite-pearlite matrix. the increase in spheroidal ratio with increasing fatigue limitation, 90% had the highest, 14.3% increasing more then 10%, distribution range of fatigue life was small in same stress level. (2) (equation omitted) of graphite can be used to predict fatigue limit of Ductile Cast Iron. The Statistical distribution of extreme values of (equation omitted) may be used as a guideline for the control of inclusion size in the steelmaking processes.
In this paper, three different types of commercially tools-P20, NC123K and ceramic-have been used to working austempered ductile iron(ADI). In the austempered condition the materials are hard, strong and difficult to machine. Thus, we selected a optimum tool material among three different types of used tools in machining of austempered ductile iron. It was used acoustic emission(AE) to know cutting characteristic for selected tool and flank wear land of the ceramic too. The obtained results are as follows; (1) The ceramic tool among three different types of tools is the best in machining austempered ductile iron. (2) In case of ceramic tool, the amplitude level of AE signal(AErms) is mainly affected bycutting speed in cutting speed in cutting condition and it is proportioned to cutting speed. (3) There have the relationship of direct proportion between the amplitude level of AE signal and flank wear land of the tool. (4) If it find the value of AErms at each cutting speed, the in-process detection to ceramic tool's wear is possible

The effect of time, temperature and gas composition on the case hardened thickness, hardness and nitride formation in the surface of ductile cast iron(GCD400) have been studied by micro-pulse plasma technique. Typically, external compound layer and internal diffusion layer which is much thicker than compound layer was observed in the nitride hardening of ductile cast iron. The relative amount kind of phases formed in the nitrided hardening changed with the change of nitriding conditions. Generally, only nitride phases such as $\gamma^'$($Fe_4N$), or $\varepsilon$($Fe_{2-3}N$) phases were detected in compound layer by XRD analysis. The thickness of compound layer increased with the increase of nitrogen content in the gas composition. The optimum nitriding temperature was obtained at $520^{\circ}C$. The nitrided hardening thickness parabolically with nitriding time(t) and thus, the case hardened layer(d) fits well with the typical parabolic equation ; d=kt. The material constant k for GCD400 nitrided at $520^{\circ}C$ was $0.04919\times10^3{\mu}m.hr^{-1/2}$.
In this paper, three different types of commercial tools -P20, NC123K and ceramic- have been used to cut austempered ductile iron(ADI). In the austempered condition the materials are hard, strong and difficult to machine. Thus, we selected a optimum tool material among three different types of used tools in machining of austempered ductile iron. It was used acoustic emission (AE) to know cutting characteristic for selected tool and investigate characteristic of AE signal according to cutting condition and relationship between AE signal and flank wear land of the ceramic tool. The obtained results are as follows ; (1) The ceramic tool among three different types of tools is the best in machining austempered ductile iron. (2) In case of ceramic tool, the amplitude level of AE signal(AErms) is mainly affected by cutting condition and it is proportional to cutting speed. (3)There have been the relationship of direct proportion between the amplitude level of AE signal and flank wear land of the tool. (4) It was observed that the value of AErms was only affected by cutting speed. Therefore it is possible to in-process detec- tion of ceraic tool's wear in case the initial value of AErms at each cutting speed decided.
Ductile cast iron is widely used for many automotive components due to its high wear resistance and fatigue resistance in addition to the low cost of fabrication. The improvement of wear resistance and fatigue properties is key to the life time extension and performance increase of the automobile parts. Surface nanocrystallization is a very efficient way of improving the performance of materials including the wear- and fatigue-resistance. Shot peening treatment, as one of the popular and economic surface modification methods, has been widely applied to various materials. In this study, ductile cast iron specimens were ultrasonic shot peening (USP) treated for 5 to 30 min using different ball size. The microstructures were then microscopically analyzed for determination of the microstructural evolution. After the USP treatment, the hardness of pearlite and ferrite increased, in which ball size is more effective than treatment time. With USP treatment, the graphite nodule count near the surface was decreased with grain refinement. The lager balls resulted in an increased deformation, whereas the smaller balls induced more homogenously refined grains in the deformation layer. In addition, formation of nanoparticles was formed in the surface layer upon USP.
