The air distribution duct with multiple outlets is an essential part of automotive air-conditioning system In a bus. The estimation of airflow rate in an automotive air-conditioning duct is typically very complicate due to large variations in cross-sectional area and abrupt changes in flow direction, as well as unbalanced distribution of the flow. In this paper, the flow characteristic in a duct with multiple outlets is investigated through experiment, CFD simulation and a one-dimensional simulation. Numerical simulations have been performed for two simplified air conditioning ducts with multiple outlets used in a medium bus. The three dimensional Navier-Stokes code was used to evaluate the overall pressure, velocity Held, and distribution rate at each diffuser according to the change of various design parameters such as ratio of cross-sectional area and radius of bifurcated region. In addition, a one-dimensional program based on Bernoulli equation was developed to obtain optimized diffuser area required to equalize discharge flow rate at each outlet. As a result of this study, optimized diffuser area of design variable by one-dimensional program was very reasonable as compared to the trend deduced from CFD Simulation. Therefore, the simple and convenient one-dimensional analysis developed in this study can be applied in practical design procedure for air-conditioning duct.
Regarding the aircrafts with a rotor blade system, the miniaturization of them is limited due to the rotor blade length and the tail rotor system. To miniaturize an aircraft, an equipment is required that increases thrust and also shortens the length of the rotor blade. The present study will conduct the flow analysis for miniaturizing the aircraft by applying a duct to the coaxial rotor blade system without tail rotor. First, the verification on the calculated results was conducted through the computational flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system without a duct. Then, the flow analysis for the coaxial rotor blade systems was performed including Ka-60 duct, Single duct, Twin duct, and Double duct, respectively. From the numerical results, the thrust coefficient appeared higher with the duct than without a duct for the coaxial rotor blade system. Especially, in the case of Double duct, the thrust was improved due to the increase of incoming flow and the extension of the wake area. These results will be used as the basic concepts for miniaturizing the aircraft with the rotor blade system. The flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system including the fuselage remains as a future work.

Depression of facial contour after parotidectomy is still challenging to many of surgeons. A 68-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of a painless swelling in both parotid area. The mass was multiple and fixed at the parotid region. We conducted a parotid duct preserving bilateral superficial parotidectomy by one-stage operation to remove the multiple tumors. A lazy S incision was made in both preauricular area and the peripheral branches of the facial nerve were identified using surgical landmark. After dissecting the branches of the facial nerve and parotid duct, main parotid duct was preserved but only small fine ductules from the superficial lobe were ligated. Parotid gland was excised from its anterior aspect with about 1 cm of normal parotid tissue margin. The patient was followed up for 6 years to evaluate postoperative parotid gland function and the computed tomography (CT) was taken. Patient was satisfied with no significant complication such as sunken changes in facial contour, facial nerve function. As far as we know, it is the first study to compare long-term soft tissue contours of soft tissue of duct preserving superficial parotidectomy with duct sacrificing superficial parotidectomy by means of CT findings.
When a train passes a conventional tunnel at high speed, an environmental noise issue arises by pressure variation and micro-pressure waves at the exit of the tunnel. It is known that this issue can be reduced by using dummy tunnel duct on the tunnel entrance. We studied the variances of micro-pressure waves at the exit of tunnel and pressure variation within the tunnel, by altering surface area and length of the dummy tunnel duct. For analyze this train-tunnel relation problem, axi-simmetric steady compressible flow solver was used. Changing the length of the dummy tunnel duct can adjust pressure variation, changing the surface area of the dummy tunnel duct can adjust volume and pressure variation of the micro-pressure wave. Thus, optimized surface area and length of the dummy tunnel duct can simultaneously reduce environmental noise pollution by micro-pressure wave and issues by the pressure variation.
A loop duct system is often found in a VAV-HVAC(variable air volume heating, ventilating and air conditioning) design. It is known that the simple T-method is not be applicable to the loop duct system and cannot be used to calculate the flow rate and the pressure drop at each duct section of the loop duct system. In this paper, the extended T-method has been developed and it is found to be applicable to the loop duct system to which the simple T-method cannot be applied. The validity of the extended T-method has been verified by using to solve for a simple, ideal loop duct system for which there exists analytical solution. In addition, the extended T-method is employed to compute the loop duct system of a real building with an area of 380$m^2$. The results show that the computed flow rate at the exit differs from the designed flow rate by a range of -13.6~43.5 %. Consequently, three design factors must be adjusted in order that the flow rate may be balanced. These include the duct sizes, in terms of their lengths and diameters, the sub-duct locations and the positioning of damper which is found upstream of the exit duct.
The ventilation performance for the various venting duct arrays has been experimentally compared in the scaled model of the container hold. Most container ships have the ventilation duct system to remove effectively the condensing heat released from container refrigerator. The existing duct system is vertically installed and basically has the number of duct as many as the columns of reefer container stack. In this study, to make up for the weak points having stagnantly hot legions in the centered area of container hold for the present system, the horizontal upward jotting duct system was proposed and proved by temperature rising tests on the scaled model. In this paper, the expected flow regimes and the thermal and hydrodynamic analogies as well as the measured temperature distributions in a hold for various duct types and heat released rates are deeply discussed.
Axial fan without static blades requires the duct as a guidance for unskewed inflows. This work examined the geometric effects of a duct guided the in and out flows through an impeller. The present methodologies are computational predictions with parallel work by experimental validation. Several different positions of a rotor in a duct are proposed for plausible models of a rotor inside a duct. The optimum axial position of an impeller in a duct is found at the #4 model where the impeller lies on the inlet edge of a circular duct. The model shows a wider inlet area. The result of computational prediction is in good agreement with experiment measurement.
Midline neck masses have numerous origin and it is important to diagnose correctly for management. A clinical analysis of 29 cases of midline neck masses confirmed by histopathological examination was done retrospectively during the last 5 years. The results were followings; 1) Of 29 cases, thyroglossal duct cyst was most frequent(17 cases, 58.6%) and non-specific lymphadenopathy was the next(4 cases, 13.8%). 2) Midline neck masses were most frequent on the suprahyoid area(12 cases, 41.4%) and hyoid area was the next(7 cases, 24.1%). 3) Two thyroglossal duct carcinoma was included in 17 thyroglossal duct cyst. 4) Seventy percent of thyroglossal duct cyst was present on hyoid and infrahyoid area.
The airflow characteristics of an air-conditioning duct with multiple diffusers were investigated through one-dimensional analysis, CFD simulation and experimental measurement. One-dimensional program based on Bernoulli's equation and minor loss equations was developed in order to evaluate the air distribution rate at each diffuser. In CFD simulation, three-dimensional flow characteristics inside air-conditioning duct were computed for incompressible viscous flow, adopting the RNG k-$\xi$turbulence model. Also, in an effort to equalize the discharge flow rate at each outlet, the optimization procedure has been performed to obtain the optimum diffuser area. In this process, square of difference between maximum discharge rate and minimum discharge rate is used as an object function. Diffuser area and discharge velocity are established as constraints. After optimization process, determined design variables are applied again in CFD simulation and experiment to validate the optimized result by one-dimensional program. Comparison with the experimental data of airflow rate distribution showed that the developed program seems to be acceptable and can be useful design tool for an automotive air-conditioning duct in an initial design stage.
