  • This study examined the effects of dubbing on the ticket sales of foreign animation movies put on the screen in Korea in the context of 'Skopos Theory'. The ticket power of animation increased when dubbing was chosen as the translation strategy. Moreover, the effects were greater when the animation was in the peak seasons, classified as non-restricted, and made in non-US countries. The ticket power was also found to be greater when celebrities joined in the dubbing. This finding was consistent with the 'Skopos Theory', which implied that dubbing is superior to captioning for audience understanding and audience attraction. This study confirmed empirically the positive effects of dubbing on the performance of foreign animation movies, which is the contribution to the literature that has been limited on case studies. These results also suggest that a dubbing strategy should be consistent with its target audience.

  • The purpose of this paper Is to propose a dubbed signal time-synchroniztion technique based on the SOLA(Synchronized Over-Lap and Add) method which has been widely used to modify the time scale of speech signal. In broadcasting audio recording environments, the high degree of background noise requires dubbing process. Since the time difference between the original and the dubbed signal ranges about 200mili seconds, process is required to make the dubbed signal synchronize to the corresponding image. The proposed method finds he starting point of the dubbing signal using the short-time energy of the two signals. Thereafter, LPC cepstrum analysis and DTW(Dynamic Time Warping) process are applied to synchronize phoneme positions of the two signals. After determining the matched point by the minimum mean square error between orignal and dubbed LPC cepstrums, the SOLA method is applied to the dubbed signal, to maintain the consistency of the corresponding phase. Effectiveness of proposed method is verified by comparing the waveforms and the spectrograms of the original and the time synchronized dubbing signal.

  • Text-to-Speech(WS) technology has been attracting a lot of interest among speech engineers because of its own benefits. Namely, the possible application areas of talking computers, emergency alarming systems in speech, speech output devices for speech-impaired, and so on. Hence, many researchers have made significant progresses in the speech synthesis techniques in the sense of their own languages and as a result, the quality of current speech synthesizers are believed to be acceptable to normal users. These are partly why the MPEG group had decided to include the WS technology as one of its MPEG-4 functionalities. ETRI has made major contributions to the current MPEG-4 775 appearing in various MPEG-4 documents with relatively minor contributions from AT&T and NW. Main MPEG-4 functionalities presently available are; 1) use of original prosody for synthesized speech output, 2) trick mode functions for general users without breaking synthesized speech prosody, 3) interoperability with Facial Animation(FA) tools, and 4) dubbing a moving/anlmated picture with lip-shape pattern informations.

  • It cannot be argued that speech is the most natural interfacing tool between men and machines. In order to realize acceptable speech interfaces, highly advanced speech recognizers and synthesizers are inevitable. Text-to-Speech(TTS) technology has been attracting a lot of interest among speech engineers because of its own benefits. Namely, the possible application areas of talking computers, emergency alarming systems in speech, speech output devices fur speech-impaired, and so on. Hence, many researchers have made significant progresses in the speech synthesis techniques in the sense of their own languages and as a result, the quality of currently available speech synthesizers are believed to be acceptable to normal users. • The purpose of this study is to research on the mechanism of exportation of Korean TV programs. As a result, the buying countries of Korean TV programs have been relatively diversified : 40 countries across the world. However, examining the frequency of exportation has shown that it primarily focused on few countries such as Japan and Taiwan. Furthermore, drama has been the most preferred genre by foreign countries. Fortunately, remakes, dubbing productions, publications, and merchandising have been started to develop. As for the trade partner, the portion of foreign distributors has been ranked as a the most prioritized type. Therefore, it is necessary to open the existing closed system of distribution of Korean free TV to build more diversified partnership.

  • This research analyzed which average comparisons and differences between groups' view motive and selection for information sources, product properties with theater animation spectator. Based on view frequency, each of groups' organization were classified to heavy, occasional, and thinly viewers. As average comparison analysis result, firstly, view motive appeared in order to "want to see animation", "to spend time and leisure activity", "to enjoy fun activity", and "because of others canvassing or recommendation", etc. Secondly, view selection for information source appeared in order to "rumor circumstance or reputation", "theater or TV previews", "internet evaluation and grade", etc. At last, view selection for practical property appeared in order to "story", "character", "special effects", "background music", "background art", "director/directing", "manufacturer/nation", and "dubbing of artist". As difference between group result, view motive and selection for product properties appeared significant differences between each of group. To the contrary, view selection for information sources did not appeared significant differences between each of group.

  • This research paper aims to inform and suggest methods in which Korea Media content could successfully enter the African broadcasting market. It also seeks to suggest preparatory steps and propose various policies that Korean government could provide, to aid the export process. In order to maximize the Korean media content exposure in the Kenyan market, increased financial support for subtitles and dubbing as well as launching a Korean culture center is suggested. In addition, to encourage more diverse channels to show the Korean content, joint content production between Korea and Kenya should be considered. Moreover, in analyzing the social, cultural, ethnic and local characteristics of the Kenyan people, the paper seeks to identify the most efficient method in which Korean wave could be more widespread in Kenya. Since virtually no prior research papers exist on Kenyan's social and cultural characteristics and their thought process on the Korean media content, this paper seeks to provide valuable insight and policy implications for Korean media policy makers.
