  • A mixture preparation strategy was proposed and evaluated in a diesel-natural gas dual-fuel engine to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions under low load conditions. An experimental investigation was conducted in a single-cylinder compression-ignition engine. Natural gas was supplied with air during the intake stroke, and diesel was injected directly into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke. First, effects of diesel start of energizing (SOE) and natural gas substitution ratio on the combustion and exhaust gas emissions were analyzed. Based on the results, the mixture preparation strategy was established. A low natural gas substitution ratio and a high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate were effective in reducing the HC and CO emissions.

  • This paper describes an investigation of the performance and emission characteristics of a commercial cylinder direct injection diesel engine operating on natural gas with pilot diesel ignition. Engine tests for variations in the pilot injection timing were performed at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. This study showed that the performance of the dual-fuel diesel engine increased as the engine load increased and as the pilot diesel injection timing angle advanced. The peaks of cylinder pressure, pressure rise rate, and heat release rate all increased while the fuel ignition timing advanced with the pilot injection timing. The engine operation was stable, and the least smoke was produced at a pilot injection timing of $12^{\circ}$ before top dead center. NOx emissions were only exhausted under high-load conditions, and they increased as the pilot injection timing angle advanced.

  • This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.

  • Experimental investigation of the interaction between dual spray formed by swirl type injector was conducted. Experimental parameter was fuel temperature, varied in the range from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Measuring parameter were vertical distance from injector tip to patternator and gap between injectors. Volumetric distiribution and SMD were measured for the various combination of parameters. The results of present study show that the arithmetic sum of each of spray is not equal to dual spray, but it is equal above specific fuel temperature. As the increases of fuel temperature, SMD decreases and becomes more uniform. As the increases of gap between injectors, fuel volume and SMD at collision area increases, but penetrated fuel decreases.

  • In this study, the combustion experiment of hydrocarbon-kerosene fueled dual mode ramjet combustor was performed at mach number 3.5~6.0 conditions. Through the experiment, the temperature and the pressure distribution inside the combustion chamber were measured and the combustion characteristics inside the combustion chamber were investigated. In the mach number 3.5~5.0 range, it was able to identify subsonic combustion in the downstream combustion chamber. In the mach number 6.0 condition, the injected fuel from the injectors was naturally fired, and it was possible to confirm that supersonic combustion was successful in the upper chamber.

  • The effect of swirl flows un the fuel spray characteristics were investigated for various swillers in a model combustor. The interaction between the flow field and fuel spray in the main combustion tone made by frontal devices including fuel injection nozzles and swirlers. which were characterized by flow velocities, fuel droplet sizes and their distributions which were measured by APV(Adaptive Phase/Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition at 320cc/min kerosine fuel flow and 0.04kg/sec air supply. A dual swirler with circumferential two-stage swirl vanes of $40^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$ vanes in different directions and two single-stage swillers of $40^{\circ}$ vanes with 12 and 16 vanes were tested. It was found that the dual swirler has the largest recirculating zone with highest reverse flow velocity. The strongest swirl flow was found at the boundary of recirculation zone. Small fuel droplets were observed in the main axial stream and inside the recirculation zone when swirling flow field were generated by the frontal devices. These findings could give the tips on the optimal design of frontal devices to realize low emissions in gas turbine combustion.

  • Ammonia-hydrogen dual-fuel engine is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emission because ammonia and hydrogen are carbon-free fuels. In ammonia-hydrogen dual-fuel engine, hydrogen is supplied to improve the combustion characteristic of ammonia. In this study, an ammonia reformer was developed to supply hydrogen for 10 kW class ammonia-hydrogen dual-fuel engine. Thermodynamic characteristic and catalyst were investigated for ammonia reforming. Heat transfer was important for high ammonia conversion of ammonia reformer. 99% of ammonia conversion was obtained when 10 LPM of ammonia and 610℃ of hot gas were supplied to the ammonia reformer.

  • Fuel wall film effects power output and cycle deviation by changing the amount of fuel flowing into cylinder in PFI gasoline engines. Reduction of wall film can reduce fuel consumption and improve combustion stability. In this research, the effects of injection strategies including injection pressure and dual injection system is investigated for reducing wall film formation. The CONVERGE software is used for numerical analysis tool and O'Rourke film splash model was used for wall film prediction model. Compared with the reference case wall film decreased with increase of injection pressures, and the film formation reduced when the dual injection system was used.

  • An ammonia fuel system is developed and applied to a 1 liter gasoline engine to use ammonia as primary fuel. Ammonia is injected separately into the intake manifold in liquid phase while gasoline is also injected as secondary fuel. As ammonia burns 1/6 time slower than gasoline, the spark ignition is needed to be advanced to have better combustion phasing. The test engine showed quite high variation in the power output to lead high increase in THC emission with large amount of ammonia, that is, higher than 0.7 ammonia-gasoline fuel ratios.

  • In this study, a dual fuel engine fueled with natural gas and diesel was tested to investigate the effects of heating value variation of CNG fuel. CNG substitution rate which is defined as the ratio of CNG and diesel supplied in a heating value basis was fixed at 80%. The higher heating value was varied from $10,400kcal/Nm^3$ to $9,400kcal/Nm^3$ by mixing nitrogen gas with pure CNG and diesel fuel was injected at a fixed injection timing. The engine test results showed that thermal efficiency and power output were decreased as the heating value of mixed CNG fuel was decreased. And the peak cylinder pressure was also decreased but the ignition delay time and the combustion duration and timing were almost same.
