The drying model has been used to obtain the fundamental information required to design the heat pump dryer with the simple thermodynamic model. In the model, the input conditions are crucial to obtain the acceptable results. The model includes one-stage heat pump cycle, simple drying process using the drying efficiency. The drying efficiency is defined with the conditions of inlet and outlet in the dryer. The experiment has been carried out in the pilot dryer with one-stage heat pump cycle. Refrigerant 134a is used in the heat pump cycle. In the dryer, some of drying air flows through the heat pump system and the rest of air bypasses the heat pump system and circulates through the drying chamber. Some operating conditions from the pilot dryer are used as input conditions of the model and the results are compared with experimental results for the validation.

Analysis of drying characteristics has been carried out with one-dimensional model in the dryer using the principle of the refraction of radiation. The dryer is composed of hot water tank, plastic film conveyer belt, drying material, etc. The model considers the con-duction and radiation within the plastic film and drying material. The film is semitransparent to radiation and the drying material is assumed to be semitransparent or opaque to radiation. The results show that the effect of radiative transfer on the drying rate is relatively large when the thickness of drying material is small and the water temperature is high. When the material is thin, the drying rate due to conduction is also enhanced and the drying time can considerably be reduced.

This study was performed to investigate drying characteristics and quality properties of dried persimmon with vacuum drying process. Drying characteristic curve of the dried persimmon showed that the constant rate drying period and falling rate drying period exist definitely. $_{\circ}Brix$, sugar content and hardness value of the dried persimmon increased as the vacuum pressure and heating temperature increased, but L value of the dried persimmon lower. The results indicated that the optimal conditions were at vacuum pressure of 40~50kPa abs., heating temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and drying time of 3~4days.
This study was executed to find the applicability of press drying of tree disk by investigating the shrinkage and drying defect and to form appropriate model by comparing the actual moisture content(MC) and internal temperature in respect of drying time with calculated values based computer simulation to which was applied finite difference method. In press drying disk, heating period, constant drying rate period maintained plateau temperature at 100$^{\circ}C$ and falling drying rate period were significantly distinguished. Actual MC and internal temperature were analogous to those calculated at comparing points. Heat transfer model formed by Fourier's law using specific heat of moist wood and conduction coefficient considering fractional volume of each element of wood cell wall, bound water, free water and air showed applicability as basic data to developing heat expansion, shrinkage and drying stress during press drying. Also mass transfer model formed by Fick's diffusion law using water vapor diffusion coefficient showed applicability. Longitudinal shrinkage was developed by pressure of hot press and tangential shrinkage was restrained by hygrothermal recovery. The heart check, surface check and ring failure were occurred differently in species, but V-shaped crack didn't develop.
Combined microwave-convective drying of 2.4mm-thick radiata pine veneer grown in New Zealand was conducted to investigate drying characteristics. The veneers could be dried from 160% to 0% moisture content in 7.5 min by microwave drying combined with hot-air of 100℃. This drying rate is about three times higher than that of conventional convective drying with only hot air of 100℃. However there remained charred spots when too high microwave power was applied. Therefore investigations of the microwave-drying characteristics of veneer of various sizes and species are needed to determine the optimal drying conditions.
The use of petroleum fuels in grain drying causes problems of high cost and management. To solve these problems, it is required to study on soLar energy as an alternative to petroleum fuels for grain drying. The purposes of this study were to find out the optimum received area and air flow rate of a flat-plate solar air collector for grain drying and to assess its effects on grain drying with a small grain bin. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; 1. The calculated optimum tilt angles of the collector in the summer and autumn drying seasons were 20 and 50 degress, respectively, in suwon area. 2. The outlet temperature of the collector was $36^\circ C$ on the daily average with the maximum of $36^\circ C$ at 12:00 o clock. Solar radiation on the collector surface was 1.04 ly( 1 langley = 1 cal/$cm^2$) per minute on the daily average and 1.30 ly per minute on the maximum at 11:00am. The thermal efficiency of the collector was 62.4 percent on the daily average, and the air flow-rate per unit receiving are was 1.03 $m^3$/min/$m^2$.4. The calculated optimum receiving area and the air flow-rate per unit cubic volume for paddy in autumn drying season was 2 $m^2$ and 2$m^3$/min , respectively. 5. not significantly difference in the collector efficiency was appeared between the rotating and fixed type of solar collector. 6. For drying of wheat with 0.6 meter of the depth in the bin, approximately 9 hours were required to reduce the moisture content from 21.6% to 13% with air follow rate of 5 $m^3$/min an initial moisture per cubic meter of wheat and with air temperature of $52^\circ C$. 7. In the drying test of rough rice with a turning operation in a grain bin approximately 21 hours were required to reduced the moisture from 21% to 14.5% with airflow rate of 2 $m^3$/min per cubic meter of rice and the air temperature of $43.5^\circ C$. 8. Over-drying at the bottom and less -drying at the top of the grain mass was resulted from the high -temperature of drying air which was obtained from the flat-plate solar collector in this test. An appropriate operation should be prepared for the uniform moisture of the grain in the bin.
This paper presents an experimental study of a solar drying system designed and installed by KIER. Experiments have been performed using the KIER system for the drying of marine products, such as squid. Presented in detail are the experimental observations of collector air temperature, solar intensity, absorber plate temperature, drying chamber temperature, humidity and other measures of drying chamber performance with variation of air mass flow rate. As a result, average temperature attained in the drying chamber during autumn weather has been adequated for drying of squids.
This study was performed to find out drying characteristics and develop drying model for the design of an efficient dryer or drying system of garlic. The basic model which describes drying phenomenon of garlic was first established. A series of drying test were conducted with two varieties of garlic(Uiseong, Namdo) at 9-different drying conditions (drying temperatures ; $40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, relative humidities ; 20%, 35%, 50%) and statistical analysis was made to fit the data with exponential equation, approximated diffusion equation, page equation, thompson equation and wang equation, respectively. In this test, the effects of drying air temperature and relative humidity on the drying rate were undertaken. Finally, new drying model based on these experimental results was developed to describe the drying characteristics of garlic. Also, the volatile components of garlic extracts were investigated. For experiment both Uisoeng and Namdo garlic were dried by heated-air-drying, followed by ether extraction. The extracts were analysed by Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometer.
A computer simulation model for rice circulating concurrent-flow dryer was developed and verified by conduction a series of pilot-scale experiment. The effects of design parameter and operating conditions on dryer performance were analyzed by using simulation. The results indicated that the developed model was found suitable for analyzing operating characteristics. The other results from simulation also showed that; 1) an increse in the initial moisture content resulted in an increase in the drying rate and a reduction in the grain temperature and total energy requirements. 2) an increase in the drying air temperature resulted in an increase in the drying rate and grain temperature. 3) an increase in air flow rate resulted in an radical increase in drying rate, fan power requirements and total energy requirements but an radical decrease in final head rice yield. 4) an increase in the bed depth resulted in an increase in fan power requirements and a lowering of the final head rice yield.
Drying grain with conventional artificial drying methods requires great quantities of petroleum fuels. Depletion of fossil fuel increases the need of the utilization of solar energy as an alternative to petroluem fuels for drying grain , an energy intensive agricultural operation. Many techniques for the utilization of solar energy in grain drying have been developed, however, there are many problems in adopting solar energy as an energy sources for drying grain. Futhermore, very little research has been done on solar grain drying in Korea. This study was conducted to evaluate the availability of solar energy for drying of rough rice in Chuncheon, Suweon, and Jinju areas based on 50year meteorological data, and to analyze experimentally the performance of a solar air collector for dying grain, and to find the effects of solar heated air compared to unheated air on the rate of drying and energy consumption required for drying of rough rice. The results of this study was may be summarized as follows ; 1. Monthly average daily total radiation on a horizontal surface in October was 260.6 ly/day for Chuncheon, 240.3 ly/day for Suweon , and 253.4 ly/day for Jinju area, respectively. 2. the ratio of monthly average daily diffuse radiation to daily total radiation on a horizontal surface was approximately 0.41 for Chuncheon, 0.45 for Suweon, and 0.44 for Jinju area, respectively. 3. Although the statistical distribution curves of daily total radiation for the three locations were not identical , the differences among them were not large and may be neglected for many practical purposes. 4. I was estimated that the optimum tilting angle of the collector in October was approximately 46 degrees for Chuncheon and Suweon and 45 degrees for Jinju. 5. The ratio of the total radiation on a optimum tilting plane to that on a horizontal plane was estimated to be 1.36 for Chuncheon, 1.31 for Suweon, and 1.27 for Jinju , respectively. 6. The collection efficiency of the solar air collector ranged from 47. 8 to 51. 5 percent at the air flow rates of 251. 1-372.96 $m^3$/hr. High efficiency remained nearly , constant during the best sunshine hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and decreased during other hours. More energy was collected as the air flow rate incresed. 7. The average temperature rise in the drying air from the solar collector for the test period varied from $6.5^\circC$ to $21.8^\circC$ above the ambient air temperature. 8. Solar-dried rough rice averaged 13.7 percent moisture (w.b.) after 130 hours of drying with the air flow rate of 1. 64 ccm/$m^3$, and rough rice dried with natural air averaged 15.1 percent moisture (w.b.) after 325 hours of drying with the same air flow rate. 9. Energy saving of 2.4 kwh per $m^3$ percentage point of moisture removed was obtained from solar heated air drYing. The solar bin used 53.3 percent less energy per percentage point of moisture removed than the natural air bin.
