  • Finite element analyses of the ceramic drying process are performed. The heat and moisture movements in green ceramics caused by temperature gradient, moisture gradient, conduction, convection and evaporation are considered. The finite element formulation for solving the temperature and moisture distributions which not only change the volume but also induce the hygro-thermal stress is carried out. In order to verify the formulation, the drying process of a ceramic electric insulator is simulated. Temperature distribution, moisture distribution, and hygro-thermal stress are compared with those of other researcher. Good agreements are achieved.

  • The drying is a process that involves coupled and simultaneous heat and mass transfer. When a wet solid is subjected to thermal drying, two processes occur simultaneously. Drying is classified according to heat transfer characteristics in terms of conduction, convection and radiation. In thermal drying, radiation is easier to control than conduction and convection drying and involves a relatively simple structure. In this study, we measured energy consumption, surface hardness of paint and surface gloss with variation of surface temperature of drying materials and drying time. Drying characteristics and energy consumption between heating panels and hot air heating have been presented. The present study shows that a dryer using heating panels is more effective than a hot air dryer from the viewpoint of energy conservation. The hot air dryer, however, was not optimized and more studies on various parameters related to drying will need to be investigated for definite comparison of drying characteristics of the dryers. The result, even if limited, would present the effective availability of paint drying.

  • The rotary kiln is one of the most widely used industrial reactors for contacting gases and solids. Kilns are mainly used for drying, calcining and reducing solid materials. In an indirected fired rotary kiln, heat is supplied to the outside of the kiln wall. Heat transfer in indirected fired rotary kilns encompasses all the modes of transport mechanisms, that is, conduction, convection and radiation. This paper deal with the heat transfer characteristics of indirect fired rotary kiln for scale up.

  • The purpose of the present study is to identify the drying cylinder model in paper plants and to analyze characteristics of process responses for changes in input variables. The model developed in this work is based on actual plant operation data where the steam pressure applied to the cylinder behaves as the major variable. It is found that heat transfer coefficients from the condensate to the canvas could be represented as empirical relations based on heat conductivities and operation data. The effectiveness of the cylinder model is demonstrated by the measured moisture contents and web temperature. Stability of the drying process is analyzed based on the transfer functions derived from the cylinder model.

  • Analysis of drying characteristics has been carried out with one-dimensional model in the dryer using the principle of the refraction of radiation. The dryer is composed of hot water tank, plastic film conveyer belt, drying material, etc. The model considers the con-duction and radiation within the plastic film and drying material. The film is semitransparent to radiation and the drying material is assumed to be semitransparent or opaque to radiation. The results show that the effect of radiative transfer on the drying rate is relatively large when the thickness of drying material is small and the water temperature is high. When the material is thin, the drying rate due to conduction is also enhanced and the drying time can considerably be reduced.

  • The vacuum drying characteristics of water-saturated porous media were studied experimentally. The water-saturated porous media, water-saturated sand layer, was heated by the isothermal bottom wall of the rectangular vessel. The vacuum drying rate and temperature distribution of the sand layer were measured and calculated under a variety of conditions of heated wall temperature, vacuum rate, and thickness of the test material. It was found that the drying rate due to the heat and mass teansfer is greatly influenced by the heated wall temperature, vacuum rate, and thickness of the test material.

  • The fiber mat catalytic burner that uses infrared radiative heat obtained by flameless catalytic combustion was manufactured and tested to investigate its combustion characteristics. About 9 to 17% of combustion heat was released by sensible heat during the premixed catalytic combustion depend on combustion condition. To find out radiation intensity with distance between catalytic burner and sample, the equation that calculate the receiving surface of radiative energy under the fiber mat catalytic burner was driven. This equation was well correlated with the drying rate of melamine. The drying experiments were carried out to the melamine, wood chip and agricultural pallet by using the fiber mat catalytic burner and the energy efficiency was calculated from drying rate of them. The energy efficiency of the fiber mat catalytic burner reaches to 79% in maximum for drying of the wood chip.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a belt-type dryer with a capacity of 1 ton/day, thereby improving drying efficiency by more than 70% and reducing the size of dryers by more than 50%, and thus making dryers smaller and lighter to reduce the installation and operation costs by more than 20%. We identified structural improvements by analyzing existing dryers employing indirect heating and verified the superior drying performance of the proposed method through some basic experiments. Furthermore, we verified the improvements in the heat transfer and drying characteristics as we conducted the experiments at reduced pressure.
