  • Three types of solar grain dryers, namely , the solar grain bin dryer, the solar greenhouse rotary drum dryer and small scale solar green house tray dryer, have been tested. The results showed that each type of solar grain dryer has its feature. These solar drying units have three main advantages : (1) Required commercial energy to remove 1Kg moist from rough rice is only 5.3% to 15.8% of the energy consumed by common heated dryer : 2) The area of solar drying system is only about 10% of the area of the sunny ground to give equal drying capacity ; (3) There are good drying quality in the moisture uniform , germination percentage, and grain color.

  • The food waste that occurs in one year is very high in our country and disposal is expensive. However, disposers for food waste are not used wisely at real life. This is because most of them some kind of problem, for example big volume, complicated construction, high cost, lots of troubles, low energy efficiency and so on. In this study, we propose the new dryer system to decrease drying times by injecting hot air in down the side of the drying bucket. The designed drying bucket has inclined inlet holes down both sides. The inlet holes have variable gradients, we adjust the inlet velocity of the hot air to find a suitable vortex in the drying bucket. We verify the properties of the proposed system though simulation. The results show the proposed dryer system can improve the drying time and save energy for food waste disposal.

  • Heat pump drying has a great potential for energy saving due to its high energy efficiency in comparison with conventional air drying. In the present study, the performance simulation for the basic design of a heat pump dryer has been carried out. The simulation includes one-stage heat pump cycle, simple drying process using the drying efficiency. As an example, the heat pump cycle with Refrigerant 134a has been investigated. For the operating conditions such as the average temperature of the condenser, the heat rate released in the condenser, the flow rate of drying air, and drying efficiency, the simulation has been carried out to figure out the performance of the dryer. The parameters considered in the design of the dryer are COP, MER, SMER, the rate of dehumidification, the temperature and humidity of drying air and those parameters are compared for different conditions after carrying out the simulation.

  • In this study, energy performance of two types of food dryers which are electric heater and heat pump is studied experimentally. With drying chamber temperatures controlled at 45, 50 and $55^{\circ}C$, sliced radish is dried from an initial mass of 90 to final 7 kg. Moisture content, drying time, total power consumption, MER (moisture extraction rate, kg/h) and SMER (specific moisture extraction rate, kg/kWh) are measured and analyzed. As the drying chamber temperature is increased, drying time is shortened but energy efficiency is reduced for both types. For an electric heater dryer, the effect of chamber temperature on drying time is significant but less significant on energy efficiency. For a heat pump dryer, the dependence of chamber temperature on drying time is weak but strong on energy efficiency. Temperature levels have little effect on electric heater dryer performance but strong effect on heat pump dryer which operates on a vapor compression refrigeration cycle. The energy performance of the heat pump dryer is superior with an average SMER of 2.175 kg/kWh which is 2.22 times greater than that of the electric heater dryer with SMER of 1.224 kg/kWh.

  • Drying process is involved in the production of various products including food, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Phase change of liquid to vapor generally requires enormous thermal energy, so in order to save energy, it is advantageous to develop an appropriate drier and use it under appropriate operating conditions, depending on the characteristics of materials. However, due to the complex, multiscale heat and mass transfer occurring during drying processes, predictions of appropriate drying conditions before actual operation are not easily achieved, leading to challenges in designing driers. Here, we developed a lab-scale experimental setup to evaluate the performance of band dries. The experimental setup was used to measure the moisture content and temperature change in the materials being dried in a belt dryer. Experimental results obtained using our lab-scale setup allow us to predict the performance of a full-scale band drier, thus suggesting a practical framework for predicting the drying process of various materials and developing band driers.

  • The crisis of energy gives rise to the growing concerns over continuing uncertainty in the energy market. Under these circumstances, there are also increasing interests on coals. In particular, Low Rank Coal (LRC) is receiving gradual attentions from green industry. But due to is high moisture content range from 30 - 60%, drying process has to be preceded before being utilized as power plant. In this study drying kinetics of LRC is induced by using a fixed-bed reactor. The drying kinetics was evaluated in from of the particle size, the inlet gas temperature, the drying time, the gas velocity, and the LID ratio. The consideration of the reynold's number was taken for correction of gas velocity, particle size and LID was taken for correction of reactor diameter, packing height of coal. As being seen as characteristic of drying coal, it can be found that fixed-bed reactor can contributed to active drying of free water. In this sense, it could be considered that phase boundary reaction is appropriate mechanism.

  • With the continuous increase of energy demand, low-grade coal is regarded as one of new energy sources. However, due to the high water content, the utilization efficiency of low-grade coal is not good to be used in recent conversion plants. Therefore, it requires a drying process to lower the water content in low-grade coals. Although a variety of drying experiments were conducted, drying characteristics in accordance with the pressure change has not been progressed. In this study, the flash drying characteristics of low grade coal with high moisture content (21.5 wt%) were determined in a pressurized micro-riser. The effect of operation conditions such as pressure (1-40 bar), dryer temperature ($200-600^{\circ}C$), and tube length (2-6 m) on drying ratios were investigated.

  • Purpose: Drying characteristics of sawdust was studied under batch mode using lab scale microwave dryer. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of material load and microwave output power on drying characteristics of sawdust. Methods: Material load and microwave output power were varied from 23 to 186 g and 530 to 370 W respectively. Different kinetic models were tested to fit the drying rates of sawdust. Similarly, the activation energy was calculated by employing the Arrhenius equation. Results: The drying efficiency increased considerably, whereas the specific energy consumption significantly decreased with increase in material load and microwave output power. The cumulative energy efficiency increased by 9%, and the specific energy consumption decreased by 8% when the material load was increased from 23 to 186 g. The effective diffusivity increased with decrease in material load and increase in microwave output power. The previously published model gave the best fit for data points with $R^2$ and RMSE values of 0.999 and 0.01, respectively. Conclusions: The data obtained from this study could be used as a basis for modeling of large scale industrial microwave dryers for the pellet production.

  • In-bin grain drying experiments were performed to investigate the drying characteristics between natural air and solar heated-air drying system of rough rice. A computer simulation model for solar drying system of rough rice resulted in a good agreement between the experimental and predicted moisture content. In order to save the electric energy consumption of fan, airflow rates control system using inverter was developed and resulted in the effect of energy saving.
