Relationship between Vertical Root Distribution and Yield Traits in IRRI's New Plant Type Rice

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the relation-ship between vertical distribution of rice roots and yield traits under field conditions. Eight IRRI's new plant type rices (NPTRs) were tested in a volcanic ash soil paddy field under dense (IO 10 cm) and common (20 20 cm) planting densities. These lines were evaluated to have more spikelet numbers per panicle (SNP), lower filled grain rate (FGR), and lower rough grain weight per hill (RGWH). In dense planting, rough grain weight per stem (RGWS) was increased due to heavier culm and leaf dry weight (CLDW), and both RGWS and CLDW were related with the percentage of root distribution (%RWI) in the 10~30 cm soil layer, while in common planting, RGWS was not closely related with CLDW. SNP was highly related with root dry weight (RDW) in the 0~10cm soil layer. FGR was mainly affected by ROW in the 10~30 cm soil layer under both planting densities. RGWS was positively correlated with top dry weight (TDW) and harvest index (HI), and TDW was positively correlated with RWI under common planting or %RWI under dense planting, and HI was positively correlated with RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer only under dense planting. RGWS was closely related with root weight index by dry weight (RWI) in the 10~30 cm soil layer and %RWI in the 0~30 cm or 10~30 cm soil layer under dense planting, and with only RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer under common planting. But RGWH showed the close positive relationship with RDW and RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer under dense planting, while under common planting, it showed the close positive relationship with RWI and %RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer or %RWI in the 0~30 cm soil layer. The deeper root system in rice, especially under dense planting, is important for high yield of NPTRs focusing on the increment of top mass production and harvest index.

한국 대두 품종의 뿌리특성 연구 (Studies on the Root Characteristics of Soybean Varieties in Korea)

  • 우리나라 대두 품종의 지하부 특성을 구명하여 수량성을 이해하고 품종육성과 재배법 개선을 위한 기초자료를 얻고자 장려품종, 도입품종 및 재내종 각 10품종씩 합계 30품종을 공시하여 포장 및 pot 실험을 수행하였다. 4엽기, 개화시기, 협비대기에 지상부와 지하부 특성을 조사하고 종실중과의 관계를 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 포장재배조건에서 장려품종군, 도입품종군 및 재래종군간의 지상부 특성은 4엽기까지는 차이가 없었고 개화시기에는 경장만이 차이가 있었으나 협비대기에는 경자, 경태, 주경절수, 분지수, 협수 및 종실중이 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 2. 포장재배조건에서 장려품종군, 도입품종군 및 재래품종군간의 지하부 특성은 4엽기에는 태근수, 개화시기에는 1차근각, 근절단강도, 협비대기에는 태근직경 및 근중이 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 3. 지상부 및 지하부의 특성들과 종실중과의 상관은 품종군에 따라 크게 달랐으며 지하부보다는 지상부 특성이 종실중과 높은 정의 상관을 보였다. 4. 장려품종군은 지상, 지하부의 어느 형태적 특성도 종실중과 상관이 없었으며 따라서 생리기능이 중요할 것으로 생각되었다. 5. 도입품종군에서는 생육 전기간의 엽면적이 종실중과 상관이 높았고 4엽기의 경장과 건물중 및 근강도가 수량과 유의한 정상관을 나타냈다. 6. 재래종군은 생육 전기간중 엽면적과 건물중이 종실중과 상관이 높았고 개화기 이전의 절수, 협비대기의 경태, 태근수 등이 높은 정상관을 보였다. 7. 우리나라 장려품종은 협비대기에 평균 1차근수 25.6개, 태근수 14개, 근각 64$^{\circ}$, 수평근장 9.8 cm, 근절단강도 10.5 kg 및 T/R율 11.9이었다.

Seasonal Growth and Root Respiration of North American Ginseng

  • American ginseng plants (Panax quinquefolium L.) of various ages were harvested every two weeks during each of three growing seasons and dry matter yield of components and root respiration determined. Shoot dry weight was about 0.5 g, 2.5 g and 4 g for 2, 3 and 4-year-old plants, respectively and fruit dry weight was as much as 50% of this in 3- and 4-year-.old plants. Root dry weight decrease by 30~50% as shoots emerged and at the end of the season was about 2 g, 3.5 g and 5 g in 2, 3, 4 and 5-year-old plants, respectively. Shoot and root dry weight were linearly related with an approximate 1:2 ratio. Root respiration rate at 2$0^{\circ}C$ in the dark was about 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ CO2 g-1 DW(dry weight) min-1 in the early season, then doubled within 50 days as shoots emerged, and thereafter declined over the season to 2~5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ CO2 g-1 DW min-1. The Q10 for dark respiration over the interval from 10 to 2$0^{\circ}C$ was 1.58. Root respiration rate and shoot growth rate was positively linearly related in all ages of plants.   • 남부지방에서 황금의 맥후작 직파 재배시 재식밀도가 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향을 구명하여 적정 재식밀도를 확립하고자 시험한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 경장은 20$\times$10cm의 밀식 일수록 크고, 30$\times$10cm, 40$\times$10cm의 소식일수록 짧아서 재식주수와 경장은 정의상관이 인정되었다. 2. 경직 경은 30$\times$10cm, 40x loom의 소식일수록 크고 20$\times$10cm의 밀식일수록 작았다. 3, 수량구성요소인 주근장과 수량인 건근중은 30$\times$10cm, 40$\times$10cm의 재식주수가 적을수록 높아서 재식주수와는 부의 상관이 인정되었다. 4.이상과 같은 결과로 보아 경직경이 크고 주근장이 길어서 10a당 건근중이 많은 30$\times$10cm(33주/$m^2$)가 알맞은 재식거리였다.

Effects of Low Dose Gamma Radiation on the Root Growth of Soybean Cultivars

  • ${\gamma}-Radiation$ at very low doses frequently has a stimulating or hormetic effect on the growth of organism. Effects of low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation on the root growth of soybean cultivars were investigated and hormetic effects by environmental conditions were compared with the occurrence of increased economic yield, seeds of cultivars were irradiated with the dose of $0.5{\sim}20Gy$ and cultivated in growth chamber controling temperature, humidity, light, greenhouse and field respectively. To understand hormetic effect on root growth of cultivars and the difference of hormetic effect by cultivation environment, harvested root of soybean cultivars were scanned with image file, and root surface area, root length, root average diameter etc. were examined by WinRhizo program. Also, dry weight of cultivars was examined. Root growth and dry weight of soybean cultivars showed apparently hormetic effect at cultivation of growth chamber condition. In field experiment executed for whole life cycle, yields of pea were not different significantly in each ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cultivars but weight of one hundred peas increased in whole ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cultivars. Increment of yield was assumed to be induced through shortening of maturing stage caused by ${\gamma}-ray$ hormesis in early growth stage.

Effects of Topping Methods on Root Yield and Major Agronomic Characteristics in Alisma plantago

  • The effects of topping method on the yield and major agronomic traits of two varieties, Sunwol and Youngjun of Alisma plantago, were investigated in the Southern region. Plant height, yield of fresh root, yield of dry root and weights of total roots were the highest in the variety of Sunwol, and at the plots with topping of four times cutting in flowering in main culm (Treatment No.1). Considering from our results, optimum topping method is most likly be topping of four times cutting in flowering in main culm in the Sunwol variety.

Growth, Nitrogen Metabolism, and Nodulation of Hypernodulating Soybean Mutant Affected by Soil Fertility

  • This study was performed to evaluate the growth and nodulation characters of hypernodulating soy-bean mutant, SS2-2, and to know the growth and yield performance of the mutant in infertile soil. Soil fertility was adjusted by mixing the different ratios of soil components including clay, river sand, and horticultural bed, which resulted in fertile and infertile soil. Dry weight, nitrogen concentration, and leaf nitrate reductase of each plant were measured around V6 stage (47 days after planting) and around R3 stage (82 days after planting). There were significant effects of soil fertility and soybean genotype on the total dry weights including root, nodule, stem, leaf, and pod dry weight at V6 and R3 stages. Total dry weight of hypernodulating mutant, SS2-2, was clearly less than that of its wild type, Sinpaldalkong 2. However, nodule development on the roots of SS2-2 was much greater than that of Sinpaldalkong 2, regardless of soil fertility. Though SS2-2 was smaller in plant size than Sinpaldalkong 2, genotypic difference in total nitrogen content was not significant at both V6 and R3 stages because SS2-2 fixed more nitrogen biologically than its wild type in the root nodule. The SS2-2 mutant showed lower plant yield in both infertile and fertile soil. The SS2-2 contained more crude seed protein than Sinpaldalkong 2, and was characterized with reduced top and root growth.

황금의 맥후작 직파 재배 연구 (A Study on Direct Sowing Culture of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGE Cultivated after Barley)

  • 남부지방에서 황금의 맥후작 직파재배시 적정시비량, 파종기, 재식밀도를 구명하여 재배기술을 개선, 보완하고 수량을 증대시켜 안정생산에 기여하고자 여천 재래종을 공시하여 실시한 시험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1.무비구(N-p,0,-K,0=0-0-0kg/kg10a)의 개화기 7월 20일에 비하여 모든 시비구가 7월 21일~23일로 1 ~2일 늦게 개화하였다. 2. 생육형질인 경장, 경태, 분지수, 주근장, 주근경 생경엽중, 건경업중은 무비 구에 비하여 모든 시비구가 양호하였으나 중비구(N-p,0,-K,0=9-13.5-9kg/10a)에서 더욱 양호하였다. 3. 수량형질인 건근중은 무비구보다 모든 시비구가 양호하였으나 그 중에서 중비구(N-p,0,-K,0=9-13.5-9kg/10a)에서 103당 건근중이 178kg으로 무비구의 126kg에 비하여 41%가 증수되었고 표준시비구(N-p,0,-K,0=6-9-6kg/10a)의 167kg에 비해서는 7%가 증수되었다. 4.출아 소요기간에 있어서 6월 1일 파종은 6월 12일로 11일이 소요되었고 6월 10일 파종은 6월 16일로서 6일이 소요되었으며 6월 20일 파종은 6월 23일로서 3일이 소요되었다 5.개화 소요기간에 있어서 6월 1일 파종은 54일이 경과되어 7월 24일에 개화되었고 6월 10일 파종은 45일이 경과되어 7월 25일에 개화되었으며 6월 20일 파종은 37일이 경과되어 7월 27일에 개화되었다. 6.지상부의 생산물인 주경장, 주경경, 주경절수,분지수 및 건경엽중 모두 6월 1일 파종에서 가장 양호하였다. 7 지하부의 생산물인 주근장, 주근경, 주당상근수 및 건근중 모두 6월 1일 파종에서 가장 양호하였다. 8. 경장은 20$\times$10cm의 밀식 일수록 크고, 30$\times$10cm, 40$\times$10cm의 소식일수록 짧아서 재식주수와 경장은 정의상관이 인정되었다. 9 경직경은 30$\times$10cm, 40$\times$10cm의 소식일수록 크고 20$\times$10cm의 밀식일수록 작았다 10. 수량구성요소인 주근장과 수량인 건근중은 30$\times$10cm, 40$\times$10cm의 재식주수가 적을수록 높아서 재식주수와는 부의 상관이 인정되었다. 11 이상과 같은 결과로 보아 경직경이 크고 주근장이 길어서 10a당 건근중이 많은 30$\times$10cm(33주/$m^2$)가 알맞은 재식거리였다.

단삼의 재식밀도와 피복재료에 따른 생육 및 수량특성 (Characteristics of Growth and Yield by Planting Density and Mulching Materials in Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the variation of growth and yield using different planting densities and vinyl mulching in S. miltiorrhiza cultivation. Top plant growth was observed in the $30{\times}30cm$ planting density of S. miltiorrhiza;, plant height, leaves and branches were larger than in the other treatments. Root length, root diameter, and supporting roots of underground part were increased as planting density was wide, and dry root weight was increased in $30{\times}30cm$. However, yield was highest at 294 kg/10a in the planting density of $30{\times}10cm$. The use of 30-31cm white and black vinyl mulching had no significant effect on the plant height of S. miltiorrhiza, as compared to non-mulching. However, the highest volume of leaves and plant weight was observed in plants using 24.7 black vinyl mulching. Dry underground root weight was highest in black vinyl mulching at 21.7 g compared to 17.0 g for non-mulching. Yield per 10a increased by 28% using black vinyl mulching compared to non-mulching. Based on the results of this study, planting density of $30{\times}10cm$ and black vinyl mulching are the most suitable in the cultivation of S. miltiorrhiza.
