Due to the population growth and exhaustion of resource, the development on the harsh environment such as cold weather is emerging as an alternative for new resource development. The permafrost area covers about 14 percent of the world's land area and the global construction market for such area is rapidly expanded. Whereas the developed countries have already recognition of the need for research of coldest place and invested heavily in technology development, the domestic technology for the coldest place development is less developed and related research has rarely been performed. There is not a detailed national specification standard for the strength and deformation properties of the earthworks at sub-zero temperature but simple field directions. Therefore, the D compaction tests were conducted on the sand with fine contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% at room temperature ($18^{\circ}C$), $-3^{\circ}C$ and $-8^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effect of the compaction energy on the compacted soils at sub-zero temperatures. Based on the test results, the larger compaction energy, the larger maximum dry unit weight under sub-zero temperature and D type compaction at $-3^{\circ}C$ show similar max. dry unit weights as those obtained from the compaction at the room temperature. However, compaction at $-8^{\circ}C$ showed significant performance degradation regardless of the compaction energy.

In the construction of earth dam, embankment, highway by filling, a compaction is to increase the density of applying pressure. By compaction interspaces between the soil graivos decrease so that density and adhesion increase but void and permeability decrease. Good compaction results in higher stablilty. The effect of the compaetion depends on a number of factors, of which the most important are soil charactesistics. Water content, and external force. In this study discussed is about sandy loam that since, with indentical force exerted and indentical compaction method, the effect of the compaction will be different due to the soil characteristics, the change of optimum moisture content and of maximum dry density by compaction yields difference in Compaction for a same sample.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of soil amendments for reducing soil compaction at heavy traffic area in golf course. Major results of this research are summarized at follows: 1. In the Lab. experiment, the porosity was improved significantly when the materials, such as peatmoss, charcoal, and tire chip mixtures were used respectively. Especially mixture of sand and 20% peatmoss showed higher effectiveness (10%) in porosity, comparing with ordinary sand. This soil mixture(sand 80%+peatmoss 20%) was observed the best in water retention, soil hardness and hydrauric conductivity. 2. In the greenhouse experiment, traffic pressure was given 7 times a day on several combination of mixture treatments to see the top dry weight. The soil mixture of 20% peatmoss showed the highest in the top dry weight. When the more traffic pressure(15 time/day) were given on the different treatment, the top dry weight was significantly reduced. However, the mixture of 20% peatmoss also had the least influence on this type of heavy traffic. 3. In the field experiment, the soil amendments were treated in traffic area f golf course, and observed at 30days, 60days, 90days, 120days after treatment. Visual turf quality(color), root length and soil compaction were compared to those of control. As a result, overall treatments with soil amendments were effective, which showed better turf quality and less soil compaction. 4. In the field test, physical characters of soil (such as soil hardness and hydrauric conductivity) in sand+tire chip+peatmoss(60:20:20, %, v/v) treatment was significantly improved. Also in the slow increasing of traffic, the soil compaction was the most effective in reducing soil hardness.
This study confirms reinforcing effect of geosynthetics in the use of soil at higher water contents as a compaction material on compaction tests, field compaction tests, and numerical analysis. To verify a confined effect, a large mold(area ratio of rammer / mold = 0.19) larger than D compaction mold(area ratio of rammer / mold = 0.33) was performed for compaction. It showed that in the D compaction test, dry density were 0.5~0.6% increases and in the compaction test using the large mold, it were 2.4~3.7% increases at high water contents. It shows that when the area of compacted area is large enough, a confined effect could be arising from the reinforcement of geosynthetics even at high water contents. As a result of analyzing of compaction effects according to 'depth(z/B) from compacted surface' in the field, when not reinforced, the compaction state deteriorated due to the over-compaction and the compaction did not work well. However, when reinforcement of geosynthetics, restraint effect by geosynthetics occurs, it is confirmed that the compaction energy is effectively transferred to the compaction layer and the dry density is increased. Also, through the conceptual model of the behavior of geosynthetic and soil layer, the mechanism in the ground due to reinforcement of geosynthetics is presented and it is verified through finite element analysis.

In this study, construction modulus, void ratio and settlement characteristics of 38 CFRD in domestic and foreign countries was investigated from monitoring data and the effect of field dry density and void ratio to dam body was analyzed. The standard void ratio of CFRD that can be easily used for dam designer and field engineer was proposed from the monitoring data. It was conformed that we can get the degree of compaction needed for reasonable compaction of dam body by calculating the field dry density from inverse operation of the standard void ratio. It was thought that the standard void ratio of CFRD is 0.2 as shape factor is under 4 and is 0.28 as shape factor is over 4.
In this study, to determine characteristics of compaction and the soil water characteristic curve(SWCC) in decomposed granitic soils, compaction tests and SWCC tests were carried out for samples having various contents of coefficient of uniform($c_u$), By compacting their samples with standard Proctor density test, the effects of binder contents on maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were investigated and compared. Samples compacted with the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content were tested by means of the SWCC, to determine their SWCC parameters, such as Brooks & Corey(${\lambda}$, ${\Psi}_b$), Van Genuchten (${\alpha}$, n, m), Fredlund & Xing(a, n, m).

For this study, alkali-activated slag red-mud pavement is manufactured to examine the usability of red-mud as a recycling material in the construction industry. In the compaction curve in terms of the replacement ratio of red mud by binder type, the dry density changed gradually depending on the water content, which implies that there is no distinct difference in compaction according to the replacement ratio of red mud. The compressive strength at 28 days was observed to be 18.9~27.0MPa in ASS, and 18.4~28.8MPa in OPC, showing a similar level between the specimens.

Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement (RCCP), is a type of pavement using compaction roller and asphalt finisher on concrete mixture that contains low amount of water. RCCP strength and durability are greatly affected by compaction level. Quality control is performed by ensuring the degree of compaction at site based on dry density. In the field, Modified Proctor Test is used in order to obtain optimum dry density. However, there is no clear compaction curve analysis criteria of Modified Proctor Test for RCCP. In this study, compaction curve built by three samples of Modified Proctor Test was produced and it was used to compare with compaction curve contented lower number of samples (one and two samples) in order to analyze their reliability. Thus, a conclusion was drawn from the results; by comparing to the result from Modified Proctor Test of three samples, the use of two samples represented result with only 0.5% of error which means the reliability is 99.5%.
Compaction tests have been performed to investigate the compaction characteristics of sands and clays with organic mixture. Weathered granite soil, kaolinite, and granulated carbon were used as the alternatives of sand, clay, and organics, respectively. The soapy water which is a kind of surfactant solutions was also used as water substitute to see the engineering properties changes of each soil. As seen when water was used, the optimum moisture contents increased and the maximum dry unit weight decreased for the soil with surfactants as the percentage of the organic contents increased. Surfactants slightly improved the compaction efficiency at low compactive energy level for the weathered granite soil with organics. As the organic contents increased for clays with surfactants, the optimum moisture contents decreased and the maximum dry unit weight increased. Surfactants slightly improved the compaction efficiency of clays with organics at all levels of compaction energy.
