The purposes of using cutting fluid during cutting have been cooling, lubricating, chip washing, and anti-corroding. However, the present manufacturing industry restricts the use of cutting fluid because cutting fluid contains poisonous substances which are harmful to the human body. Therefore dry cutting becomes an unavoidable assignment and a lot of researches have studied cutting methods without using cutting fluid. Because dry turning is a continuous work, tools life is reduced by continuous heat generation and surface gets rough due to reduced lubrication, so it is important to consider these situations. In this paper, the way of selecting the optimal machining condition by the minimum number of experiments and the effectiveness of using compressed air in high hardness materials through Taguchi method have been found. Dry cutting using compressed air showed better cutting characteristics than normal dry cutting with respect to by cutting force, tool wear, and surface roughness. Also, the optimal machining condition f3r dry cutting using compressed air could be selected through Taguchi method.

Recently, various efforts to make more speedy and precision machine tool to improve productivity and also various efforts to solve environmental problem are going on, so that dry cutting in manufacturing industry, which needs environmental conscious design and development of manufacturing technique, is becoming a very important assignment to solve. Because dry cutting does not use cutting fluid, we need other methods that can be used instead of cutting fluid, which does cooling, lubricating, chip washing, and anti-corrosion. Especially, because turning is a continuous work, the consideration of tool life and surface roughness due to continuous heat and poor lubrication is important. The purposes of this paper are the consideration of how well the compressed air can work instead of cutting fluid, and also the development of the method to select the optimum machining condition by the minimum numbers of experiments through the Taguchi method.
For economical and environmental reasons, the aim of this research is hence to monitor the cutting conditions with the dry cutting, the wet cutting, and the mist cutting to obtain the proper cutting condition for the plain carbon steel with the ball end milling based on the consideration of the surface roughness of the machined parts, the life of the cutting tools, the use of the cutting fluids, the density of the particles of cutting fluids dispersed in the working area, and the cost of cutting. The experimentally obtained results of the relation between tool wear and surface roughness, the relation between tool wear and cutting force, and the relation between cutting force and surface roughness are correspondent with the same trend. The phenomena of surface roughness and tool wear can be explained by the in-process cutting forces. The models of the tool wear with the cutting conditions and the cutting times are proposed to estimate the tool cost for the different cooling strategies based on the experimental data using the multiple regression technique. The cutting cost is calculated from the costs of cutting tool and cutting fluid. The mist cutting gives the lowest cutting cost as compared to others. The experimentally obtained proper cutting condition is determined based on the experimental results referring to the criteria.

This paper develops and evaluates a mechanical machining process which involves drilling on PVS material. According to the material, two treatment experiments were conducted, one involving drilling in a wet condition or using a lubricant and one involving drilling in a dry condition with no lubricant. Drilling in a dry condition showed better performance in terms of the cutting time than in the wet condition. Otherwise, the wet condition has several advantages. The lubricant influenced the burr diameter size and minimized the temperature on the surface of the work piece. During the wet condition drilling process, a smaller burr diameter size was noted as compared to the dry condition. The temperature showed a linear correlation with the drill bit size, where a least-square analysis provided an $R^2$valuewhichexceeded 0.95. The wet condition required more cutting time than the dry condition. In this condition, the water provides a lubrication effect. A thin layer between the cutting edges and the surface of the work piece is formed. The chip formation is affected by the drilling depth. The color on the tips of the chips was darker than in the initial condition. No correlation between the drilling depth and the bore roughness was noted, but the variation of the cutting speed or the RPM influenced the roughness of the bore. The optimum cutting speed ranged from 40 RPM to 45 RPM in the condition which provided the finest roughness surface.

This paper is studied on the effect of TiAlN coated ball end mill on cutting characteristic of high hardness steels in dry cutting condition without coolant. KP4 steels[HRC32] and STD11[HRC60] heat treated steels wert: used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill and single and multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill were utilized. Results showed that TiAlN coated ball end mill were increased the cutting length than WC-Co ball end mill in the cutting speed$[245\~320m/min]$ about $2\~5$ times for KP4 steels and about $2.7\~4.3$ times for STD11 heat treated steels. The multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill is good about $1.2\~1.7$ times for KP4 steels and STD11 steels than single layer coated.

In this study, unsintered and pre-sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the machinability, optimum tool materials and optimum cutting conditions. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (1)In the case of dry cutting, the sintered diamond and natural diamond tools exhibit better performance in machining of the ceramic pre-sintered at lower temperature, and the tool lives of both tools in machining the ceramics pre-sintered at high temperature becomes extremely short. (2)The performance of CBN tool becomes better in dry machining of the ceramics pre-sintered at higher temperature. (3)When the pre-sintered ceramics were wet machined with sintered diamond, the tool life becomes considerably long, and higher cutting speed can be used than in the case of the CBN and ceramic tools, the tool lives becomes shorter at wet cutting than at dry cutting, especially exhibiting extremely short tool life in wet cutting with ceramic tool.

This paper presents a study of the influence of fixed pressure in turning. The effect of roundness error and diameter deformation were studied with respect to the fixed pressure applied inside the cylindrical work piece made by boring tool in CNC lathe. The boring tool used in this study is a tungsten carbide coated. The material of workpiece is SM45C and the machining method is dry cutting. Cutting conditions as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut are constant. Finally, the change of fixed pressure had influence on the roundness error and diameter deformation.

High-speed machining generates concenter thermal/frictional damage at the cutting ed rapidly decreases the tool life. This paper I at determining the effect of cutter orienter the cutting environment on tool life, tool mechanism when down milling. In this paper, experiments were carried out in various tool and cutting environments, such as dry, wet compressed chilled air, tool life were measu evaluate machinability in high-speed milli difficult-to-cut material and die steel, Tool measured in horizontal upwards, horiz downwards, vertical upwards and vert downwards. In addition, tool life was measur dry, wet and compressed chilled air. For this a compressed chi1led-air system was manufact The results show that a horizontal cutter ori provided a longer tool life than a vertical orientation. With respect to the cutting envi compressed chilled air increased tool life. H the wet condition decreased tool life due thermal shock caused by excessive cooling high-speed mill ins and the compressed chilled had little effect.
