  • A 160 MW drum-type boiler-turbine system is developed in the present research through a multi-multivariable dynamic matrix control (DMC) scheme and a multi-multivariable model approach. A novel intelligence-based decision mechanism (IBDM) is realized to support both model approach and control scheme. In such case, the responsibility of the proposed IBDM is to identify the best multivariable model of the system and the corresponding multivariable DMC scheme to cope with the system at each instant of time in an appropriate manner.

  • The load of power plants changes every from time to time according to which steam flow of boiler changes. the feed water control is very important for the power plant to be operated in its stability conditions. In case of circulation type boiler, the instability of feed water control leads to instability of drum level control. The higher level of drum water can induce bad quality steam to go into turbine which means the possibility of damage. The lower level of drum water can induce the tubes of boiler water wall to be overheated. In case of once through type boiler, the instability of feed water control leads to bad cooling of superheaters. The less the feed water flow is, the more heated the superheater is. It is necessary for the turbine driving feed water pump to be controlled for the optimal feed water flow in the large capacity power plant. The speed of turbine is controled for the feed water flow. By the way, the optimal control of steam valve is necessary for the speed control of turbine. Therefore, the various kinds of the steam valve structures are introduced in this paper

  • In this paper, a decentralized multilevel-adaptive controller for a boiler-turbine system is designed by using multiple model adaptive method. It is applied to the drum type boiler-turbine system which is simplified from Boryung T/P #1,2 model. A linearlized model is decomposed into three subsystems by means of linear transformation. Then the DMC based on such subsystem is designed and a Multiple Model Adaptive Control(MMAC) scheme is applied for the purpose of the good tracking to variable load demands of the thermal power plant. The good performance of the designed controller is shown by simulations in various conditions that have the large step and ramp change of power demamd.

  • Many years ago, most of thermal power plants built in this country were of subcritical pressure, of medium or small size, of constant pressure operation, of drum type steam generator. But, nowadays, almost all of them were of high efficiency, of supercritical pressure, of great capacity(about 500MW), of sliding pressure operation, of once through type steam generator. Presently built once through boiler introduces turbine bypass systems to variable pressure operation which eliminates unexpected materials in boiler tube during startup, minimizes fuel loss by short startup period, eventually improves total efficiency and power system stability

  • This paper presents comparison results of Step Response Model of Dynamic Matrix Control(DMC) for a drum-type boiler-turbine system of a fossil power plant. Two possible kinds of step response models are investigated in designing the DMC, one is developed with the linearization of theoretical model and the other is developed with the process step-test data. Then, the control performances of each model-based DMC are simulated and evaluated. It is observed that the simulation results with the step-response model based on the test data show satisfactory results, while the linearized model is not suitable for the control of boiler-turbine system.

  • Many years ago, most of thermal power plants built in this country were of subcritical pressure, of medium or small size, of constant pressure operations and of drum type steam generators with circulation type boilers. But, nowadays almost all of them were of high efficiency, of supercritical pressure, of big capacity, of sliding pressure operations, and of once through type steam generator. It has such advantage as the reduction of startup duration, but it control system and operation method are very complicated. It has a big difference in operation method of turbine and boiler. The feedforward control needs to be introduced to prevent such problems as thermal shock during the transit from normal operation into bypass operation. This paper introduces the turbine control and turbine bypass control during startup of thermal power plants.

  • For the purpose of the good tracking to variable load demands of the thermal power plant, a decentralized multilevel control(DMC) scheme is presented. It is applied to the drum type boiler-turbine system which is simplified from Boryung T/P #1,2 model[4]. A linearized model is decomposed into three subsystems by means of linear transformation. Then the DMC based on such subsystem is designed. Simulation using Matlab-Simulink shows that the proposed algorithm works very well to the large step change of power demand.
