  • It has been increasingly difficult to predict the amounts of Acer mono sap to be collected due to droughts and cold waves caused by recent climate changes with few studies conducted on the prediction of its collection volume. This study thus set out to propose a Big Data prediction system based on meteorological information for the collection of Acer mono sap. The proposed system would analyze collected data and provide managers with a statistical chart of prediction values regarding climate factors to affect the amounts of Acer mono sap to be collected, thus enabling efficient work. It was designed based on Hadoop for data collection, treatment and analysis. The study also analyzed and proposed an optimal prediction model for climate conditions to influence the volume of Acer mono sap to be collected by applying a multiple regression analysis model based on Hadoop and Mahout.

  • A past monthly data is not faithful so much for a short term. But, the stochastic generation technique was provide of a long-term data. Thus this study is used a data which generated a monthly inflow amounts data by Thomas-Fiering model. This model is needed a certain process which determination of distribution, decision of continuous durability, etc. It was generated a inflow data every one month as Thomas-Fiering method. The generated inflow data was used input data for a monthly cumulative analysis. This analysis obtained a storage capacities which would be required during droughts having various return periods. It was presented a equation of fitting regression that was carried out regression analysis of 5, 10, 20, 50 years period.

  • The objective of this study is to identify whether or not the ground water level is decreasing. We suggest a method of estimating the change in groundwater level using newly developed groundwater pumping station data. The Goseong area located in Gyeongnam province was selected considering three factors. First, this area demands relatively large amount of irrigation water because most of the land is used as a paddy field and the proportion of the paddy field within total arable land is increasing. Second, groundwater level data in nearby area are available since these are monitored by Water Management Information System (WAMIS). Third, many groundwater pumping stations have been developed in this area in order to overcome droughts thus detail information for pumping stations are available. Regression results indicate groundwater level has been decreased for over 20 years. This decreasing trend is due to the shortage of surface irrigation water which was caused by the decrease in rainfall.

  • Recently natural disasters such as the frequency and intensity of drought have been increasing as a result of climate change. This study suggests a drought index, WADI (Water Availability Drought Index), that considers water availability using 6 components (water intake, groundwater level, agricultural reservoir water level, dam inflow, streamflow, and precipitation) using the Z score and data monitoring on a nationwide level. SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) was applied in coastal area. For the severe droughts of 2001 spring and 2008 autumn, the index was evaluated by comparison with reported damage areas. suggested to combine The spatial concordance rate of WADI in 2001 and 2008 for estimation of the degree of drought severity was 50 % and 24 % compared to the actual recorded data respectively.

  • In order for the evaluation and analysis of the spring drought which has been periodically occurring in Korean peninsula since 2000, the use of satellite image data is increasing to investigate temporal and spatial characteristics of the drought areas. The recent spring droughts in south Korea have some characteristics. It last for short period in spring when the activity of vegetation is not lively and it have large areal deviation in the severity of drought. In this study, considering the characteristics of the spring drought in Korean peninsular, the MODIS satellite image data which has superior spatial and radiometric resolutions was used for the analysis of the spring drought. In two basins having different spatial characteristics, the drought events were selected and their severities were analyzed using the MODIS NDVI, LSWI, and daily rainfall data since 2000, and the spatial characteristics of the drought area were analyzed using the DEM, land cover, and digital forest map of the study areas.

  • This paper sought to provide information regarding the water resources in the Philippines, focusing on the issues of water quality, status of water use and water scarcity, and other threats to water availability. Although the country has sufficient amount of water resources, it was found out that water availability is still threatened by some major water resources problems: increasing water demand due to drastic growth in population, water resources pollution, droughts and flooding and weak institutional framework to address these problems. Water quality problems include increasing groundwater and surface water pollution. Moreover, drought and flooding have also increased damages in recent years due to deteriorating watersheds and high economic and population growth. In relation to these, the government enacted national laws to define and deal with water control and quality management. The objective of this research was to present and evaluate current conditions and issues on Philippine water resources.

  • Diverse researches using vegetation index have been carried out to monitor spring droughts that have frequently occurred since 2000. The strength of the drought monitoring using vegetation index lies in that it can reflect characteristics of satellite images: large area coverage, cyclicity, and promptness. However, vegetation index involve uncertainly caused by diverse factors that affect vegetation stress. In this study, multi-temporal vegetation index is compared with the most representative meteorological drought indices like PSDI, SPI. Based on the results from analyses, usability of vegetation index as a tool of drought analysis is proposed.

  • In the tropical western Pacific (especially, west of 135oE, including South China Sea and the Philippines), during boreal summer, it was found that a strong correlation exists between the tropical cyclone activity and the drought conditions in Korea. During the summer drought, firstly, there were strong ascending flows over the tropical western Pacific with more tropical cyclone genesis, and to compensate for this, descending flows develop in the mid-latitudes, thereby causing drought; in other words, a secondary circulation is formed between the tropical western Pacific and mid-latitudes of East Asia. Secondly, the developments of both the subtropical western Pacific high and the Manchurian low are suppressed. As a result, both the land-sea pressure gradient and the southerly flow from low-latitudes to Korean area are also weakened, which reduces approaches of tropical cyclones to this area despite the high frequency of their geneses.
