Droplet size is one of the most important parameter which controls the performance of the combustion system using liquid fuel or oxidizer. Droplet formation and its size are mainly affected by the injection velocity and ambient gas density. Recently, droplet size measurement was conducted by PDPA or Malvern particle analyzer using laser light. But at this paper image processing method was developed to measure droplet size. And its validation was investigated with reticle.
Despite its benefit in engine thermal efficiency, gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines generate substantial particulate matter (PM) emissions compared to conventional port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines. One of the reasons for this is that the spray collapse caused by the spray-to-spray interaction forms the locally rich fuel-air mixture and increases the fuel wall film. Previous studies have investigated the spray collapse phenomenon through the macroscopic observation of spray behavior using laser optical techniques, but it is somewhat difficult to understand the interaction between sprays that is initiated in the near-nozzle region within 10 mm from the nozzle exit. In this study, the spray structure, droplet size and velocity data were obtained using an X-ray imaging technique from the near-nozzle to the downstream of the spray to investigate the spray-to-spray interaction and discuss the effects of spray collapse on local droplet size and velocity distribution. It was found that as the ambient density increases, the spray collapse was promoted due to the intensified spray-to-spray interaction, thereby increasing the local droplet size and velocity from the near-nozzle region as a result of droplet collision/coalescence.
Droplet size is one of the important factors in the deposition and drift of agrichemical application. In this study, droplet size and its distribution of the three different sizes of ceramic hollow cone nozzles being used in the air carrier sprayer for apple production were investigated at the various nozzle pressures and the three air velocities. The Malvern particle size analyzer were used for the measurement of droplet size and its distribution. The important results emerged from th is study can be summarized as follows. 1. Discharged rate was increase with the increase of the nozzle diameter and pressure, amount of the difference was remarkable between the nozzle diameter of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 mm, but no difference were found between the diameter of 1.0 and 1.2 mm in the same nozzle pressure. 2. Mass median diameter were varied as 40~160 ${mu}m$ at the air velocity of 0 m/s, 70~140 ${mu}m$ of 15 m/s and 100~160 ${mu}m$ of 20 m/s 3. It appeared that the air velocity range of 15~20 m/s was desirable for both drift and deposition control in the given experimental conditions.

The static pressure distribution, atomization characteristics and velocity distribution of tapered nozzle swirl spray is analyzed and then compared with original swirl spray. The static pressure distribution inside the swirl spray is measured using a piezoresistive pressure transducer. Phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) is applied to measure and analyze the droplet size and velocity distribution of tapered nozzle and original swirl spray. The static pressure inside the spray shows the lower value compared to the atmospheric pressure and this pressure drop is getting attenuated as the taper angle is increased. The droplet size of tapered nozzle spray shows similar value compared to the original swirl spray at the horizontal mainstream while it shows increased value at vertical mainstream. The deteriorated atomization characteristics of tapered nozzle spray is improved by applying high fuel temperature injection without causing the spray collapse. The velocity results show that the larger portion of fuel is positioned with higher injection velocity, and the smaller portion of fuel is positioned with lower injection velocity with causing spatially non-uniform mixture distribution.

The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.
This paper presents the effects of ambient pressure on atomization characteristics of high-Pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a shadowgraph technique. In order to investigate the atomization process numerically, the LISA-DDB hybrid model was utilized. This breakup model assumes that the primary breakup occurs when the amplitude of the unstable waves is equal to the radius of the ligament of liquid sheet near the nozzle and the droplet deformation induces the secondary breakup. The results provide the effect of ambient pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is also revealed that the accuracy of prediction of LISA-DDB hybrid model is pretty good in terms of spray developing process, spray tip penetration, and SMD distribution.

A direct photograph measurement technique was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in subsonic crossflow and it also obtain that SMD distribution by using PLLIF technique. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a normal, cavitation, and hydraulic flip. The objectives of this research are getting a droplet distribution and drop size measurement of normal flow and compare with the other flow effects. Although the study showed visually that drop size were spatially dependent of Air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, and normalized distance from the injector exit length.(x/d, y/d) There are also difference characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the normal flow.
This paper presents the effect of injection pressure on the atomization characteristics of high-pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a laser sheet method. In order to investigate the atomization process in more detail, the calculations with the LISA-DDB hybrid model were performed. The results provide the effect of injection pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is revealed that the accuracy of prediction is promoted by using the LISA-DDB hybrid breakup model, comparing to the original LISA model or TAB model alone. And the characteristics of the primary and secondary breakups have been investigated by numerical approach.
This paper describes the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline swirl injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. The atomization characteristics of gasoline spray such as mean diameter and mean velocity of droplets were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 7 and 10 MPa of injection pressure under different spray cone angle. The results of this work show that the geometry of injector was more dominant over the macroscopic characteristics of spray than the fuel injection pressure and injection duration. As for the atomization characteristics, the increase of injection pressure resulted in the decrease of fuel droplet diameter and the atomization characteristics differed as to the spray cone angle. The most droplets had under $25{\mu}m$ diameter and for the large droplets(upper $40{\mu}m$) as the spray grew the atomization presses were very slow. Comparison results between the measured droplet distribution and the droplet distribution functions revealed that the measured droplet distribution is very closed to the Normal distribution function and Nukiyama-Tanasawa's function.

Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) was used to scrutinize the spatial distribution characteristics of spray emanating from a small Liquid-Rocket Engine (LRE) injector. Droplet size and velocity were measured according to the variation of injection pressure along the plane normal to the spray stream and then the spray characteristic parameters such as Arithmetic Mean Diameter (AMD), Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), number density, span of drop size distribution, and volume flux were deduced for an investigation of spray breakup characteristics. As the injection pressure increases, the number density, span, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the AMD gets smaller.
