  • A light collecting probe named Multi-colored Integrated Receiving Optics (MICRO) is experimentally examined to verify its performance. For these purposes, the time-series signals of MICRO probe is compared with those of electro-static probe and light-guided probe by monitoring, for example. such as OH radical chemiluminescence. CH radical band and droplet Mie scattering In addition, the experiment was conducted by using laminar premixed Bunsen flame, turbulent premixed Bunsen flame and premixed spray flame, respectively. It was confirmed that the performance of MICRO probe was very useful and convenient to obtain the chemiluminescence signals from local regions in turbulent premixed Bunsen flame and premixed spray flame.

  • Spray combustion has been used in many industrial fields, for instance, such as diesel engines, gas turbines and industrial furnaces, and furthermore various measurement techniques have been applied to elucidate the phenomenon of spray combustion. In order to measure simultaneously the droplet velocity and the droplet size of spray, Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) was frequently used in spray combustion. However, the measurement error is occurred due to existence of flame, which is considered as influencing the precision of measurement. Therefore, the purpose of this study is experimentally to conduct the systematic evaluation on the measurement error when PDA measurement is applied to combustion field.

  • A series of experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of the extinction of a liquid pool fire with two different water atomizing nozzles. Fire source is a small-scale circular stainless steel pan of 120mm in diameter with the fuels of hexane and ethanol. K-type thermocouples were used to measure the flame and fuel temperature along the pool centerline and under fuel surface. A digital camera was used to visualize the process of the fire suppression. The experimental results show that water mist droplet size is l15∼180${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with nozzle A and 130∼190${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with nozzle B. The extinguishing time of pool fire was reduced with the increase of pressure. When water droplets are small, they do not reach the flame base since they may be deflected or evaporated by the fire plume. However, influence of flow rate is more important than droplet size on fire extinction. Among the fire extinction mechanisms, drop of flame temperature is superior to suffocation of $O_2$ concentration.

  • In this study, analysis of water mist behavior is performed using numerical simulation. Water mist is characterized by the droplet flow which is one of the multiphase flows and is discrete fluid droplets in continuous air. It is important to choose the proper diameter of droplet-size and the distance between the fire location and the position of water mist because it depends on the buoyancy from fire. Therefore the behavior of water mist with fire should be simulated by FLUENT, a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program, with Lagrangian discrete phase model. (DPM)

  • An experimental and numerical analysis were conducted to investigate the transient temperature distribution and flame propagation characteristics over an inline polystyrene spheres under microgravity. From the experimental, a self-ignition temperature of polystyrene bead was 872 K under gravity. Flame spread rates were 4.7-5.1 mm/s with ambient gas N$_2$and 2.3-2.5 mm/s with ambient gas CO$_2$, respectively. Flame radius diameters were 17 mm with ambient gas N$_2$and 9.6 mm with ambient gas CO$_2$, respectively. These results suggest that the flame propagation speed could be affected in the Diesel engine and the boiler combustor by EGR. In terms of the flame spread rate and the transient temperature profile, numerical results have the qualitative agreement with the experiment.

  • The single droplet combustion characteristics of multicomponent fuel such as diesel-oxygenate and diesel-paraffin blends under high ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure were investigated in the study. The results of the study may be concluded as follows : In the combustion of diesel fuel droplet with additive of oxygenate and paraffin, the dimensionless droplet size of $(D/D_o)^2$ was linearly decreased with time. A fuel droplet with low boiling temperature additives and in high boiling temperature diesel fuel evaporates and burns faster than usual diesel fuel. This rapid burning may result from so-called "micro-explosion" and its burning intensity varies with the types of additives. The results above may suggest that rapid evaporation of oxygenate additive in the middle stage of combustion can contribute much to combustion improvement of blended fuels. When compared to ordinary diesel fuel, neat oxygenate and paraffin fuels show blue flame during entire combustion which prove smokeless combustion.

  • The present study conducted experimental study of spray combustion to investigate the effect of the inlet conditions of fuel and air on the flame structure, the flame stability and the characteristics of emission in the can-type model of a gas turbine combustor. In the experiment, the diameter of fuel droplet was measured using Malvern particle size analyser and temperatures in the combustion chamber were measured with R-type shielded thermocouple. In addition, flame structure was taken picture with camera and analysed. Gas analyser was also used to analyse the concentration of each components of exhausting gas. The experimental results showed that the flame condition was optimal with swirl number, 0.63 and equivalence ratio, 0.5 for controlling the flame stability, the combustion temperature and the NOx concentration. The present study concluded that both the flame structure and the emission formation were strongly affected by the swirl intensity, which selection was found as an important parameter for either stabilizing flame or lowering the quantity of NOx.

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the ignition characteristics of a n-dodecane fuel droplet on the hot surface. Simplified bench scale test setup was built to examine the effect of air flow on the ignition temperature of fuel droplet. IR pyrometric sensor was used to measure the surface temperature, the measured temperature using IR pyrometer was directly compared with k-type thermocouple. The ignition of n-dodecane fuel droplet was divided into two stage - cool flame and hot flame - with the air flow rate except the case of air flow rate 3.0 lpm. The ignition temperature and probability was greatly affected by the air flow rate and the MHSIT of the present study was about $300^{\circ}C$ for air flow rate of 0.5 lpm.
