  • An experimental study is performed on atomization characteristics and stable operating condition for injection of high viscous waste vegetable oil using effervescent atomizer with two aerator tubes. Consideration is given to the effects of ALR and liquid viscosity on the velocity and mean diameter of the injected droplet. It is found that (i) as ALR increases, the axial velocity of the droplet is increased, while half-velocity width and SMD are decreased regardless of the change in liquid viscosities, (ii) the rate of fine drop distribution occupied in the total spray field is increased with an increasing in ALR, and (iii) the effect of viscosity on atomization characteristics is minor.

  • In this study, a liquid sheet type co-axial nozzle has been used to investigate the turbulent atomization characteristics which could result in the experimental data to be used in designing a jet nozzle with high performance. Image processing technique and immersion sampling method were employed to measure droplet size. In atomizing characteristics, droplet size distributions and absolute droplet sizes, SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) have been investigated in the wide ranges of flow field depending upon the air-water mass ratios. And the comparisons between the present data and the semi-empirical curves have been conducted semi-empirical correlation for SMD has been derived in the present analysis.

  • In this paper an experimental study of a spray created by two impinging jets is presented utilizing a novel two-reference-beam double-pulse holographic technique. Visualization of the overall spray pattern as well as measurements on the size and velocity of the droplets were performed with the special emphasis on the effect of physical properties of liquids. The overall spray pattern clearly revealed the inherent wave nature In the disintegration process of this type of atomization. The structure of liquid elements near the impingement point is indicative of the mechanisms of the disintegration process. Surface tension plays an important role in the droplet size without any noticeable effect on the spray pattern, whereas viscosity affects the structure without any significant effect on the droplet sire. The droplet velocities were not affected by liquid properties.

  • Droplet size measurement technique was established for the sprayed viscous fluid by virtue of the installation of the sprayed-droplet size measurement system employing light scattering method. Atomization test results showed that the mean droplet size of the sprayed viscous fluid is decreased with the increase of the mass ratio of air to fuel and in case of the same air/fuel ratio, also with the increase of viscous fluid flow rate, and is increased with the distance from atomizer tip. Basic design data for the manufacture of external-mixing type, Y-Jet type, and internal-mixing type atomizers was acquired from the atomization tests.

  • Models for the rate of atomization and deposition of droplets for stratified and annular flow in horizontal pipes are presented. The entrained fraction is the result of a balance between the rate of atomization of the liquid layer that is in contact with air and the rate of deposition of droplets. The rate of deposition is strongly affected by gravity in horizontal pipes. The gravitational settling of droplets is influenced by droplet size: heavier droplets deposit more rapidly. Model calculation and simulation results are compared with experimental data from various diameter pipes. Validation for the suggested models was performed by comparing the Safety and Performance Analysis Code for Nuclear Power Plants calculation results with the droplet experimental data obtained in various diameter horizontal pipes.

  • In this paper an experimental study is presented to investigate the dynamic behavior of impacting droplet onto a liquid film. The main parameters are the droplet velocity and the thickness of the liquid film. Photographic images are presented to show the formation of crown, central jet and disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The emphasis is on presenting the time evolution of crown diameter, crown height, central jet height and the size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The diameter and height of crown are higher for faster droplet and thinner liquid film. On the other hand, the height of central jet are higher for faster droplet and thicker liquid film. The size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet heavily depends on the droplet velocity; Larger droplet is produced with faster falling droplets.

  • The spherically-symmetric burning of an isolated droplet is a dynamic problem that involves the coupling of chemical reactions and multi-phase flow with phase change. For the improved understanding of these phenomena, this paper presents the numerical results on the n-heptane droplet combustion conducted at a 1 atm ambient pressure in three different initial droplet diameter ($d_0$). The main purpose of this study is to provide basic information of droplet burning, extinction and flame behavior of n-heptane and improve the ability of theoretical prediction of these phenomena. To achieve these, the numerical analysis was conducted in terms of normalized droplet diameter ($d/d_0$), flame diameter ($d_f$) and flame standoff ratio (FSR) under the assumptions that the droplet combustion can be described by both the quasi-steady behavior for the region between the droplet surface and the flame interface and the transient behavior for the region between the flame interface and ambient surrounding.

  • In this paper an experimental study is presented to investigate the effect of a step edge and a stationary droplet on the dynamic behavior of impacting droplet on a wall. The main parameters are the distance from the edge and the center-to-center distance between two droplets. Photographic images are presented to show coalescence dynamics, shape evolution and contact line movement. The emphasis is on presenting the spreading length of droplet for the step edge and two coalescing droplets along their original centers. It is clarified that the droplet exhibits much different dynamic behavior depending on the location of the step edge. The momentum of impacting droplet was better transferred to the stationary droplet as the center- to-center distance between two droplets was reduced, which results in more spreading of coalescing droplet.

For the improved understanding of these phenomena, this paper presents the experimental results on the methanol droplet combustion conducted under various initial droplet diameters ($d_0$), ambient pressure ($P_{amb}$), and oxygen concentration ($O_2$) conditions. • Vaporization characteristics of a liquid heptane droplet in high-pressure and temperature flow field are numerically studied. Variable thermodynamic and transport properties and high-pressure effects are taken into account in order to consider real gas effects. Droplet Vaporization in convective environments was investigated on the basis of droplet vaporization in quiescent and convective environment. In quiescent environments, droplet lifetime is directly proportional to pressure at the subcritical temperature range but it is inversely proportional to pressure at the supercritical temperature range. In convective environment, droplet deformation becomes stronger by increasing Reynolds number due to increase of velocity while droplet deformation is relatively weak at a higher pressure for the same Reynolds number cases.
