An experimental and numerical study was performed to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic atomization characteristics of high-speed diesel spray issued from the common-rail injection system. For the experiments, spray visualization system and a phase Doppler particle analyzer system were utilized to obtain the spray atomization characteristics such as the process of spray development, spray tip penetration, and SMD distribution. In order to analyze the process of spray atomization with KIVA-3 code, the TAB breakup model is changed to the KH-DDB competition model, which assumes the competition between the wave instability and droplet deformation causes the droplet breakup above the breakup length. The calculated results were also compared with the experiments in terms of spray tip penetration and SMD distribution. The results provide the process of spray development, axial and radial distribution of SMD, and calculated overall SMD as a function of time after start of injection.

An experiment was conducted to figure out the atomization characteristics of a highly viscous biodiesel fuel with rice-barn oil applying and ultrasonic energy into it. A spray simulator for the droplet atomization, an ultrasonic system, and six different nozzles(3 pintle-type nozzles and 3 single hole-type nozzles) were made. To investigate effects of ultrasonic energy in a highly viscous liquid fuel, an immersion liquid method was used as a measurement method on droplet size distributions. It was found that the ultrasonic energy was effective for the atomization improvement of the rice-bran oil as a highly viscous biodiesel fuel and the factor나 such as the nozzle opening pressure, pin-edge angles, hole diameters, and collection distances affected the atomization of spray droplets.

The fuel injection type, in the gasoline engines of atomization of fuel droplet and its distribution hae influenced directly on the decision of engine performance and harmful emission. In this paper, atomization characteristics of fuel spray is investigated with microscopic visualization system. Particle motion analysis system is used to measure the SMD from fuel spray of air-assisted injector by initial factors such as temperature of ambient air and air-assisted pressure. As air-assist pressure and ambientair temperature increase, the SMD is decreased, and its variation is more stable.
This study was carried out to analyze the spray characteristics as a function of the operating parameters of urea injector used in Urea-SCR system of passenger diesel vehicle. Spray visualization and PDPA experiment were performed to analyze the macroscopic spray development and atomization performance of urea-water-solution. For the urea injector, the deformation of the spray head does not appear to be significant because it operates at a low pressure conditions, and the liquid core and primary droplet are observed throughout the operating conditions. No increase in atomization is seen when the operating pressure is increased, and the spray develops linearly due to poor atomization characteristics. The macroscopic spray behavior of the low-pressure urea injector is predictable through the modification of the Hiroyasu equation.
It has been known that spray characteristics have an important effect on the mixture formation and directly influence the engine performances and the emissions. Up to now, the measurement of droplet size is well developed such as PDPA and PMAS though the behavior of small droplets during secondary atomization is not clear. Particle image velocimetry(PIV), a planar measuring technique, is a very efficient tool for studying complicated behavior and a fast and reliable method to track numerous droplets during injection. In this study, two-color scanning PIV is designed to obtain quasi-instantaneous two dimensional velocity data by using he-ion laser, rotating mirror and beam splitter. This PIV method which has high temporal and spatial resolution provides the information about the small complex droplet behavior.
Liquid breakup under the variation of AC frequency has been studied experimentally in the electrohydrodynamic atomization. The effect of parameters such as charging voltage, flow rate, nozzle tip inner diameter and power frequency have been considered. This work was performed to investigate the experimental analysis for the effect of AC frequency on breakup process, the mapping of occurrence of disintegration region, and the relationship between the applied power and the droplet radius. The experimental results show that the increase of applied voltage in a certain frequency band leads to a reduction in the droplet size within the limits from 50Hz to 400Hz. The transition phenomena from dripping mode to spindle mode were observed under the band of sudden fall of droplet radius changing ratio, and the synchronous region were produced within the range of applied voltage from 5kV to 6kV.
Recently, it is exceedingly required to produce metal powders with tailored shape and phase altogether in order to fabricate high performance functional parts such as magnetic core or electro-magnetic noise suppressor for high frequency usage. Therefore, the collision phenomena of in-flight droplets against chamber wall or neighboring in-flight droplets each other is investigated by a computational method in order to get useful information about how to design the atomizing system and how to tailor process parameters not to make irregular-shaped powders during gas atomization process. As a results, smaller powders, lower melt temperature are known to be favorable for droplets not to collide against chamber wall. In additions, powders of narrower size distribution range, lower droplet generation rate, lower melt temperature, lower gas velocity are desirable to prevent droplet-collisions against neighboring in-flight droplets.
This paper is intended to analyze the macroscopic behavior and transient atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. Time-resolved droplet axial and radial velocity components and droplet diameter were measured at many probe positions in both axial and radial directions by a two-component phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA). In order to obtain the influence of fuel injection pressure, the macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 3,5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different surrounding pressure in the spray chamber. The results of this work show that the fuel injection pressure of gasoline injector in GDI engine has influence upon the mean droplet diameter, mean velocity of spray droplet, the spray tip penetration, and spray width under the elevated ambient pressure.
A nozzle with vortex generator was used to develop the low pressure nozzle with high atomization performance and the nozzle atomized the liquid by centrifugal shear forces. In order to analyze the atomization characteristics, a shadowgraphy method was used and the measurement of droplet size was performed by using laser diffraction analyzer. The liquid injection pressure was fixed as 0.03 bar which is very low pressure and the gas injection pressures were changed from 0 bar to 2.0 bar. As a result, the breakup was achieved at the air injection pressure of 0.25 bar and over. The nozzle with the orifice diameter of 0.4 mm and the orifice gap of 0.25 mm presented small droplet diameters under 50 at the air injection pressure of 0.75 bar.
